When I binged the Fall of the House of Usher, a new horror series on Netflix, something caught my eye: State Attorney C. Auguste Dupin employs a vintage dictaphone to document his interrogation of the enigmatic and twisted Billionaire Roderick Usher. The prop department chose one of my favorite dictaphones, the Sony Mic’n’ Micro M-100MC. This is one of the last microcassette recorders ever produced, and is now 27 years old. What could be the motivation to equip a character in a 2023 series with an ancient magnetic tape device? I make some educated guesses. Beware: there are SPOILERS! Happy Halloween!
