There is a reason you are planting on your birthday over & over! It's because you love what you do and it shows in these videos. Thanks to you & farmers everywhere.

I stumbled upon your channel and am really enjoying what you are showing. I am in California, but my mom was born in Callaway (looks to be about an hour away from where you are). For generations my family were farmers in Nebraska. My grandparents left partly because my uncle was deaf and California had better schools for deaf kids at the time. When my grandmother was a child, her favorite part of farming was walking behind the horses and holding the plow steady. I love seeing how technology has made farming more comfortable, faster, and more productive. I feel like I’m connecting with my roots when I watch your videos, and who knows, maybe our great great grandparents knew each other! Thanks for making these videos and keep up the good work!

We learn so much from this channel!! Both of us grew up around farms, only when we were children, so seeing the equipment and how things are run just takes things to another level. Your videos are fun and informative, so thank you so much for them all! Hope you had an awesome b-day!! And Grant, the most chilled and professional worker I've ever seen, you're damn cool, showing us important yet overlooked stuff giving even more info.. Thank you both!

For some reason, this has been my favorite video of this season! So interesting and fun to watch. Also, I just commented to my wife last night, as I was finishing up mowing my yard, how good the lilacs smelled. So I know what you were experiencing with your grandma's lilac bushes! A belated happy birthday, Laura, it is always a joy to see your videos. You are correct, nothing can replace the personal touch in the cab. Sound changes will tell you if something is not right, no computer can do that in a tractor. I drove a CAT 777 rock truck on a coal mine when I was younger. I definitely get what you're saying. They're automatic with power steering so the trucks are very nimble, but you feel like you're driving in a house, being so high in the air and the weight under your tiers, compared to the smaller Bell or Volvo articulating trucks.

There are a couple of things you can do if the beeping is too loud, if it's a single hole over the speaker you can put a piece of tape over it. If it's more of a grate, a piece or two of paper taped over the opening (I use a pad of sticky notes placed on top of the speaker on my radio at work because even on low volume it's too loud).

The knowledge you have about the process makes it work efficiently, because stops in the process are kept so short. Allies ops etc. Just thinking how my cousins planted corn, wheat etc in the late 70’s. Large hectares but not flat land. Quite a contrast and no computer technology all eyeballs and brain overdrive. After school I would drive a truck loading from harvester then to the dryer’s. Cousins operation sheep/cattle/grains was big then now a lot bigger. Their kids who are about your parents generation took over and now their kids are working the farms. ( your age) They invited me down last year so I’m thinking about visiting this summer. They have similar John Deere equipment to your farms. I just want a ride in one of those tractors🙃aroha from NZ.

There are so many issues that need to be ironed out before it is even practical, and then will you really be able to insure an automated tractor without someone able to take over. Lots of costly mistakes being made with an operator in the cab. A short lapse of attention almost sent me into the river several years ago in my sprayer on auto steer. One of our farms in Texas was on the Red River and saw some waters near flood stage that removed several acres from one field. Due to the topography of the field and the height of the crop I couldn't see what had happened. I looked at my rate monitor at the wrong time almost didn't have enough space to stop before going over the edge.

Automation happens in stages. It’s not too difficult to imagine a comfy air conditioned room in your house decked out like the tractor cab. It’s not impossible for sensors to detect the failure of some seeding or harvesting operation. Sure, it may be necessary to hop on a quad bike and perform a fix, but how often you need to do it is the question. If something goes wrong once a day, is that too often? Also, remember that this virtual tractor cab can be scaled up with almost no effort to run multiple real tractors at once. Everyone thinks their job can’t be done by machines, even up to the point the machines are doing 98% of the work.
@Jowbaka
@Jowbaka 2 года назад
If automated tractors were good enough at detecting faults and just stopping, then one farmer could run several of them at the same time and just drive between them to fix the problems.

Agreed, every job can be done by machines. The only problem is that the industries like to cut costs and save money, so those machines often fail more than they normally would... But like you said, stages. Even that problem becomes less and less.

Every job will be doable by a machine, eventually. Esp those that peoples consider "high value" making advanced calculation is something that will come very easy to future AI. Let's just hope the singularity will be kind to us.

Autonomous equipment only works as long as there is a human around to monitor and fix things that don’t go as programmed. While AI has come a long way in identifying problems, the realm of a machine then fixing them remains pretty limited. The bigger the machine, the faster it operates, the more it produces, the more important it is to catch and fix glitches ASAP, which can’t be done from sitting in a Lazy Boy recliner 20 miles away. Of course with all the computerized equipment today, I constantly worry that we are one EMP away from entering the stone age.

Just a few things that stood out to me - I am not a farmer at all: holy moly - agriculture is super important und I appreciate your work so much but a field that size without trees, bushes or at least some natural stripes every now and then is soo ecologically dead. No room for insects, birds or a few rodents. And isnt the wind a problem for your soil? You must have so much erosion and sand storms :-O It just does not seem to be very sustainable to me. I am not sure I understand your point. The world needs fewer farmers because of engineers (by at least an order of magnitude). Did you see the tractor steer itself? Track where it had already planted? Not to mention the tractor itself. Oh, and you should have a look at the varieties of seed available for purchase - they are optimised for different levels of moisture and different conditions to provide the greatest yield, all of which are are chosen based upon forecasts made by engineers. Farming is an incredibly technology intensive occupation.

There's definitely things AI can do really well, and some it can't. Processing extremely large amounts of data quickly and arriving at the best solution based on a set criteria is something a machine can do better than any biological being. A calculator is a simple example; internet databases are a more modern one. Doing repetitive motion is another great machine advantage. What they fail at are things that require human dexterity. So making an AI robot to go into someone's house to fix a leaking pipe in a timely manner - extremely extremely difficult. Or, like you said, fishing out that one branch in a specific row in a massive field - very tricky. So there are definitely advantages and limitations to machines, but overall, I'd say anything driving-related is probably on it's way to becoming automated. If you told a farmer in the 1900s that in the future there'd be a giant, wheeled machine planting thousands of seeds by itself, he'd probably laugh. So a lot of tech that seems outlandish or impractical now might be evolve to be pretty useful 50, 100, or 500 years down the road.
@abum91
@abum91 2 года назад
We are not far from having full autonomous tractor....repetitive instances are where AI works better
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper Год назад
What she meant by that was occasionally you get an object or debris blocking the feeder from metering out seeds, and while there are sensors that could be used to detect that, creating a machine that could adapt to whatever might have found its way in there and fixing the problem is a different story entirely. Imagine getting a piece of paper bag stuck in there underneath 50lbs of seed and your tractor shuts down in the middle of a 600 acre field waiting for someone to fish it out so the tractor can keep going. In order to stay productive and not compact/disturb your soil unnecessarily, you'd just about have to utilize a helicopter to fly out to the tractor every time. Being in the cab and able to fix the problem on the spot when it happens is something current technology is sorely lacking. Think about all the little bolts that broke and whatnot that she filmed early in the video, those are also things that an operator could likely fix on the spot. It's that kind of stuff that's the real roadblock to autonomous farming.

I watch a couple different you tubers farmers. From South Dakota it is amazing all the hard work that you do I wish all the ppl cld see that and realize what goes into your every day life. Thank you 🙏 for all your hard work. I’m sure with prices the way they are it isn’t getting any easier.

15:00 i got to say as a crane operator your words at minute 15 mark got directly to the hart and the sad part is that 99% of the people do not understand this type of effort

can't get over how much operating the equipment is like flying an airplane, and the HUGE scale or size of this stuff, pivots, tractors, attachments, is quite amazing. Feel for Grant of all the places the post could of struck it hit a vulnerable spot... geeeeezzzeee. Fascinating video.

When a person is really good at their job, the task at hand, they always make it look very effortless. You are so right, people don't see all of tge background work leading up to the efficiency of a job done well, and they don't notice the tons of little things that are done while seemingly being effortless. I hear you Laura. It is still a lot of work.

Happy birthday Laura!!! You’re exactly right… just like you said tractors are always going to need a operator, bolts,pins,lines,wheels ECT. Will always be breaking and a tractor is always going to have to have a farmer to get the job done…

Hi Laura. I graduated from Concordia Teachers College in Seward in1977. First time I had been in Nebraska. I'm from Colorado. I miss those Nebraska sunsets and thoroughly enjoy seeing them in your videos. Brings back good memories. My husband and I love following you and Grant. Happy BD fellow Taurus.

Great explanation as to how technology complements the person and does not replace the person. You are far more efficient and productive than farmers of the past. Thank god. You feed the ever expanding world!! Keep it up.

I love that a farm girl who can sling 50 lb bags of seed (and haul lava rocks in the mud) recognizes that she's still a girl who likes nice nails. I'm a suburban older white collar man who is learning more about where my food comes from. I was also pleased to hear that your grandpa is well enough that he could come out to the field. My birthday is also May 11, and I had the honor of sharing that birthday with my grandfather.

Happy belated Birthday Laura. My daughter’s birthday was y’day the 20th. She turned 31. Seems like just y’day she was 3..... Good luck on your farming this year. I know that things are more expensive this year, like fuel... and some things are in short supply....
