I've just joined Preply Martin after obtaining my 120 hour Tefl qualification, these unedited trial lessons are excellent, watching this video has given me an idea, would you recomend perhaps sending the student a few questions before the trial lesson, such as where are you from? or what would you like to obtain from learning English? The reason I ask is, in this case, if the Student sent me an email saying they were from somewhere I hadn't been to or visited, I could look up some details regarding their part of the world (tourist attractions, cultural habits etc) to chat with them about in the inital discussion stages. I think your videos are excellent, and your already helping me plan my first trial lessons. Thankyou. Mark

I’m American and have lived in the US all my life, but I studied abroad in England (at the University of Manchester) for 6 months at the beginning of 2021 and fell in love with it. I recently ordered some Heinz beans and salad cream off of a website that sells British foods because I was missing beans on toast quite a bit… hearing your accent and talk about England made me head into the kitchen and eat some while watching this video! Speaking of the video, it was very helpful - thank you! I have my first ever lesson with a student tomorrow and this is a great guide and structure for how to teach.

Hannah, thank you for your comment and letting me know about your experience of the U.K. - it is so nice to learn that you enjoyed your time here and had a chance to try out some of the food. Best of luck with your first lesson tomorrow and let me know how it goes. I’m sure you’ll do well - without a doubt. Have a splendid Christmas and all the best for 2023.

This is a great trial lesson and I was able to inculcate so many useful points into my own teaching. Creating an atmosphere that allows students to speak uninhibited is a win-win always :) I would love to ask you though @SeoulForeigner how do you manage to have all these points jotted down over a Wordfile whilst simultaneously sharing your screen for the icebreaker discussion? I use a similar approach where I ask my students to speak on a topic but note sentences as they speak it. However, I like this idea more!
@ELTExperiences
@ELTExperiences 10 месяцев назад
Thank you ever so much for taking the time to write a comment. When it comes down to student feedback, when students are speaking, I am writing simultaneously in a Word file with what they mention. Once they have finished that specific part of the speaking, I then share the file and go through it bit by bit providing feedback where necessary. If they have said something that is good, I tend to try to provide some additional way of how to say things more naturally with idiomatic expressions or other colloquial phrases. I hope this helps and thank you ever so much for your comment. It is greatly appreciated. Regards, Martin 😊

Hi Martin not a question so much as a comment on this. For an intermediate student I'm a bit surprised that you'd post your introduction questions in writing on a Powerpoint. I find as a teacher that it's easier to assess a student's listening and speaking level if you don't give them that visual scaffolding. Just my personal opinion though - I admire your amazing level of preparation for this!
@tohidavarideh2481
@tohidavarideh2481 7 месяцев назад
Hey Martin, I appreciate your content. This video gave me a few new ideas to add to my trial session slides. I have a couple of questions, though: 1. When it comes to placement, do you rely only on the trial session's oral assessment or do you assess other skills as well? If yes, how exactly do you do it? especially for IELTS students. 2.Also, what's your go-to textbook series?
@ELTExperiences
@ELTExperiences 7 месяцев назад
When it comes down to the placement for IELTS students, I tend to disregard the placement test on Preply but assess during the trial lesson. I also get students to complete some written task from the IELTS. For your second question, I have a range of materials but not focus on a particular book as each student requires something unique and specific. I usually use a range of topics and materials from online sources such as IELTS Liz or LinguaHouse. There are plenty of materials available online and if you want a coursebook to help you then it’s a good place to get started.

Very helpful Martin. Don't you think the "Ask Martin questions" part takes speaking time away from the students? Don't get me wrong, it's great for the student to learn more about you to connect with you. It can be a nice listening activity, although I quite can't help but think there are way better ways to use that time. If I were a teacher I would feel a bit guilty for taking that time away from them.

“What do you like to get up when you have free time?” All of the British shows and movies I’ve watched, I’ve never heard this sentence? Is it normal? I’m very surprised. It sounds terribly odd. It’s a typo and rather clumsy at best. The question is meant to be: “What do you like to get up to when you have free time?”. It was a common question used during spoken exams and then regraded if learners couldn’t understand.
