In this video join me (and Joli) for a super long 2 hour plant chores video! I imported some plants recently and they've not all acclimated as planned, so some major plant rehabilitation is in order. There have been lots of plant to do's recently - repotting, watering, dusting, pruning, propagating, repotting, potting up and soooo much more. My plant chores have been getting on top slightly recently and I've been feeling a bit burnt out and overwhelmed by all my plant care. I talk about plant burnout in this video, and some of the things I do to stay motivated when it comes to caring for my houseplants. Thank you to everyone who asked questions, and I really hope you enjoy the video!

Claire, your plant house tour is the video that really encouraged me to start off my planty journey! I think I watched it 5 times in a row at that time, and I still come back to it to this day, because I find such great confort in watching it. I would love for you to do an updated version, I.m sure it's a lot of work but I reckon it will be worth it 🥰

I like the longer format. It's hot in Aus now and unpleasant being outside gardening. So I watch these Sat morning and do indoor plant things, cooking, cleaning etc. Usually I do things I've been procrastinating on and frequently have ideas I'd not considered before.

Eeeep I feel so passionate about this: I have always scraped off the outer layer to reveal the underlying corm, and I have had a 100% success rate with my corms in fluval stratum. Covered in a container (much like the one you just cleaned out!) until growth really pops off. I was amazed the first time I tried stratum after years of water, soil, spagnum moss, etc. The time it takes it to sprout growth and roots is shockingly fast. And the plants make an effortless transition to pon once well rooted 😘 Hope that helps! My baby Jacklyn’s are so dang cute!

I see you have a lot going on in your life, plants, your boyfriend moving in and he is working at home, and trying to maintain everything in the house. You need to take a step back and evaluate life and see what it is that is getting you upset and overwhelmed. I was married to a man with ADHD and his normal routine was fine but if something new entered the picture, he would be stressed, and burned out from things, so something in your life is too much from your normal routine. I hope you find your way. - I love your channel and enjoy watching you.

I love a good long video where I can be doing housework and watch it at the same time without having to keep going back to the iPad to change the video etc. Sometimes I sit and watch but sometimes I’m busying myself. In regards to cleaning things, I’m one of those people that sterilises everything between use. Just a combo of being in a science degree that requires sterilisation and also having severe OCD (best career idea, I know!), I have to clean everything between plants. Nothing gets cross-contaminated at all. It does sound overboard, I know, but OCD gonna OCD, yo. Also, 💚

I’m an artist and I listen to longer, chatty videos when I’m working in my studio. So it’s a 💚 for me. I do also like tutorials (I’m trying to become a better plant parent) but I like those to be short and to the point without any extra stuff.

Hi Claire, I am not discounting the comments about changing your clothes after handling plants that have pests, but I just can't see it. Hand washing after handling a plant with a pest and also trying to keep your plants spaced apart is a big help. I'm sure it is difficult with large collections. I totally enjoyed this video!!! ❤❤❤

Just in case you’re curious, you’ll find the gigas appears and even grows much like the melanochrysum as its a hybrid of that plant, I think it’s other parent is verrucosum. So generally they’re much easier to own yet keep the appeal of the melanochrysum. This may also explain the ease of rooting them as Melanos are on the whole easy to propogate but a pain to size up.

About the tortum, mine was doing exactly the same. It was creating nice big leaves in the summer and then in the autumn this started. I chopped it but it kept doing the same. So, I think it just wants more light. I moved it closer to the west facing window recently and keeping an eye on it if it gets better. Hopefully that solves it! Going towards the brighter days anyways 😊🌱 And YAAAYYY for Esmeraldense!!! 🎉💚🎉💚🎉💚🎉💚🎉💚 💚🌸💚🌸💚🌸

I wouldn't change clothes unless it was a thrips situation. I used to be a plant merchandiser. It was the best job, loving plants as I do. I have over 300 plants and the burn out was terrible. My health wasn't good so my husband told me to stay home and not work. This past year I have a better hold on my plants and a new refreshing feeling to getting them back to where they should be. They were suffering as I was. New year new outlook. Watching your videos again and feeling inspired.💚🙂

Hi Claire! When I sprout corms I pick that brown stuff off. Unless the corms from the Jacklyn are in fact black. But usually they have the brown membrane and I scrape it off. I’ve sprouted corms that small before! You can too! Love you and your channel! Xoxoxo from Florida!

Same. I had a A.J. corm in sphagnum moss for months doing absolutely nothing and I was about to give up on it. But I decided to peel off the brown membrane and within a few weeks it had started sprouting!

💚 I absolutely love long videos like this. If there's a shorter video, I often feel like it goes forward too quickly and I need to watch again to catch something I missed... I feel like nowadays quick and short content is so popular that I feel like I'm in the minority with liking very long and relatively calm videos! I won't even do anything while watching, I'm just enjoying every bit of planty content with the people I like (like you). I watch these while I'm relaxing on the sofa or when I'm eating breakfast, dinner of evening snack☕🥪 It was so funny that you mentioned other youtubers' sun rooms and I follow them all! The world is so small. I'm too dreaming of my next home and I hope it will be a proper house with extra rooms for both my and my husband's hobbies. I want a plant room that can have some mess on the tables and my husband needs an office for his work and also for his many instruments and music studio equipment... I'm currently expecting a baby so soon we need a room for him/her too. Now we don't have an extra bedroom here in our apartment but I think a baby doesn't need own room for a long time... This year I need to downsize my plant collection so that I don't have as much chores, but that's not fun! I love growing vegetables on my balcony but this summer I probably can't carry as much water there as before😬 I would like to grow as much as before because eating your own vegetables is so fun and healthy.

Hi Claire, my Frosted Heart came from rescue shelf in a supermarket. I cut it, the bottom part is in an aroid mix and the upper part rooted in semi-hydro and that part is doing much much better. My plant care is a bit spontaneous, for example today (saturday) I started to water and transferring into semi-hydro my alocasias at 6.00 a.m. 😀 No plan at all. I am definitely for option of long plant chores videos 💚💚💚

I can relate to the plants in one spot where you see them regularly to remember to care for them. I was just telling my boyfriend that I feel silly having all of mine in front of one window because it’s the only one that isn’t shaded in my house and I can’t remember to water them when I need to and not forget any of them.

I have 2 chiapense, frosted heart and variegated. I grow them both in soil. The frosted heart is in my cabinet because it's rehabbing. The other is in room conditions and does great.

For the alocasia jackolyn corms I’ve peeled them so they dark hard shell is all gone and then put them on a paper towel and only misted with a bit of water and put on top of a heat mat so it creates a little greenhouse effect for them and all mine sprouted well ☺️

I’ve done corms that small before. I put them in moss in the tiniest little condiments container and it took about 4 full months for them to start to sprout. But they did!! And they look wonderful.

I don't sterilize pots but I wash them out maybe with hot water if they had pests. I just make sure all the dirt is out. If they are just getting up potted sometimes I just rub the dirt out and reuse it.

I just put my frosted heart on the moss pole, 4” plastic D shaped one that’s 24” tall. It has two growth points growing well but it’s only just been put on the pole about 3 days ago. It’s biggest leaf is 4-4 1/2”

I tell myself I can't watch your long videos until I'm doing plant chores myself (even though I want to watch right away). I've grown an alocasia Jacklyn from a corm in fluval stratum. I'm fairly new to plants but I bought the mother from Walmart and it died almost immediately from rot. I managed to find one corm and luckily it's doing ok. Just finished it's 3rd leaf but the original died. It's in a closed bin with a bunch of other Polly and pink dragon corms.

Love your videos!! Concerning the change of clothes with spider mites: no I wouldn't. Should I? Yes. I work in a laboratory in a different town, and one day I was working with a microscope under semi sterile conditions. And suddenly there was a spider mite crawling on my sample.. it crawled from my hair onto my lab coat into the sterile flowhood onto my sample..i worked with my plants the day before!

I learnt to drive in my 30s. Passed 1st time but had masses of lessons. I was born in a big city and public transport was great so no need to drive. Later I moved to as more rural area hence why I learnt to drive. I was also v scared, to this day I will get v stressed about driving to unfamiliar places/routes. I will only do it if I absolutely must. The longest trip I took was to go and pick up a stray dog that I adopted, it was picked up on a motorway by a nice woman member of the public. She could not find any owners and put out a call for help in rehoming online. So I went, a drive that was well worth it. I had her for 15 years. The dog I mean. A lovely lurcher. Brilliant dogs.

💚☺️ Any content you produce is fine with me. I have been using your videos to sit down in between bouts of plant care as a reward focus. Works wonders. My chiapense frosted heart is the same height as my regular chiapense but the leaves are smaller and have a light coloured leaf and beautiful white veining on the newest leaves. Same treatment, growing attached to a 900mm stake.

I put my chiapense in pot to acclimate and it is so happy. Then you can just skip the moss. I so dislike removing moss from roots!

I have a giant repotting mat for working on my big chonks on the floor. I also love thrifting plant pots, I’ve saved so much money What about trying to peel the skin off those Jaklyn corms see if that’ll help prevent rot? I don’t see why a wet stick without roots couldn’t take in nutrients, if it’s growing a leaf it would have to be, the wet stick takes in water right? I think roots are just extensions of the stick not the only way to get nutrients. But I have no proof, just my opinion. If you pot that Alocasia especially deep into pon is there a fear of stem rot?

Hi Claire. I've given up on chemically treating for pests. I now high pressure spray down leaves with water. If pests are around during spring or autumn, I put the plant outside to let mother nature do its thing. During winter, I do a high pressure water spray and wait till the warmer weather arrives. Also, doing a soil repot can be a solution. Greeblies, can hibernate for extended periods of time. 🌺

I don’t change my clothes unless I had to carry a large plant that had pests. I do wash my hands after each plant handling.

I need tips for keeping the moss poles hydrated…. Mine seem to dry out immediately even when I've soaked them in the shower and then watered with the watering can to double-check 😅

Did you pre moisten when you added the moss? Sometimes they can be a bit repellent and it’s easier to wet before adding to a pole and then keeping up

Yes but that was a year ago before my bf had to take over for a while when I had to take care of my dads affairs… bf didn't know about watering the poles 😅

Mine is around 60% and I need to water them about once a week (I don't have any large plants on moss poles yet so that could differ?

I really love your videos! All of them really. I would love a video (or just a few tips) on how to use spagnum moss for propagating. Mine rot immediately. I tried wet, dry, with grow light and/or heat mat. But I just can’t get it right. 💚💚

For my hoyas I have a lot of them in macrame hangers so they trail down and/or climb up the macrame hanger. I also like the circle trellises and bamboo trellises with vertical and horizontal pieces which gives lots of options to wrap the tendrils around. I feel the bamboo trellises would look very nice in your space 😊

I’m loving your recent videos! With regards to Alocasia Jacklyn (Tandurusa), I’ve just grown four or five from corms and they looked just like that - little raisins, lol. The ones I put in the “shallow puddle” rooted more successfully than the ones I put in tree fern fibre. I don’t advocate peeling corms (and I’m not even sure you could peel these ones) as it doesn’t happen in nature and you could introduce bacteria. The maturity of the corm is what determines rooting time, peeled or not.

I always peele mine and then disinfect them with hydrogenperoxid. Since I overwatered some in moss before, it was hard to see if they were rotting with the layer on top. Now I do them all in fluvial stratum and I just enjoy being able to see them as contrast in the black substrate 😂

I’m pretty sure the fungus gnats that spread in semi hydro is from not flushing, dead roots or other tissue and/or algae build up because that’s all technically organic. You should be able to eradicate them easily! And the non rooted euphorbia should harden off much more very soon! That’s how they’ve always looked for me right after a chop! ❤good luck!

Hi Claire, I was just watching you try and find a big heavy pot for your splendid just a suggestion I bought one of those drillbits the other day for drilling holes in ceramic or anything like that. I absolutely love it you can put drainage holes in any pot and then you can plant directly into that pot and don’t have to use a cover pot if that makes sense

I use simple bamboo U-shaped trellises for hoya. I think the round ones look very dated and the bamboo works with my vintage/boho interior ☺️

I found an alocasia jacklyn corm when I repotted my plant, I put it in the ml of water method, and it’s been in there about 3wks to a month, and I really thought it wasn’t going to do anything at all, but it’s just started growing a root and sprouting

I wish I could have a green house so bad. The worst is I am lucky to own a house alone as a 30 years old despite a low salary. I just don't have the money to get it done. My house has so much potential... In the meantime I'll just dream about it.

There are a lot of people that are quick to push on what is the right way to do things when it comes to plants, and yes, maybe its is a good idea to disinfect tools and wash the containers, but most of us that are caring for hundreds of plants for a long time understand that you only need to do as much as realistically able to do without overwhelming yourself. For example I do not disinfect my tools ever, I only wash them if they get dirty, I never change my clothes, I only wash my hands, and so on, and my plants are perfectly happy and growing well, in fact, last time I had pests on my plants was a year ago. My advise is to not worry about all the right things you should be doing just because people tell you its the right thing to do, just focus on doing the bare minimum very well, like watering, fertilising, and checking and treating from pests. The rest of the things do just when you feel comfortable with doing it and it does not feel like a nuisance, otherwise you will overwhelm yourself and it will cause plant neglect because you will get burned out from plant care.

No, I wouldn't change again. I worked at the University of WI-Stevens Point through college and then was manager at a retail tropical green house (both years ago) and no... I wouldn't shower And I wouldn't change my clothes. Maybe wash your hands and forearms and call it a day.
