Fun fact for you Claire: Your inner variegated hoya bella is a Lida Buis. Her and her twin sister Anneke Buis were the daughters of the person who cultivated and named the inner and outer variegated Bellas. So the outer is “Anneke” and the inner is “Lida” last name “Buis”. Real people, real names. Twin sisters. The name of the inner variegated gets passed around, mixed up and butchered a lot. So even if you bought it as, Luis Buis, Lisa Buis, Louis Bois etc etc. They’re just all mixed up versions of the actual name… “Lida Buis” 🤗

Top tip for your regale. I would separate the 2 bits of chonk. The plant will do much better that way. The whole chonk needs to be covered in semi hydro, which will encourage the advantageous roots to grow.

Hello Claire, I love this type of video. We all have struggling plants and it’s nice to see even the pros sometimes have rehabs. Another woman I follow has started using silica with her variegated plants to limit browning on white parts of the leaves. Might be something to look into for that variegated frydek. Thank you for the longer video, love your content.

And yeah self watering pots can be super expensive and hard to justify, I have about half of my semi hydro in DIY self watering just inside a cache pot and they do just fine that way it's easy to have a peek at the water level down the side of the nursery pot 😊

On Amazon i buy these water valve type thing . Its the same as the valve in most self watering planters. I got 20 of them for 23 $ . I like them . Something to try anyway .

Love the idea for a pon prob box, however I’d recommend adding perlite into the pon to make the substrate less heavy. I’ve found that it helps the roots find their way. You can also rehab your ficus in water. Good luck! ❤

My queen actually doesn't really love high humidity. I would have her out of my cabinet if I wasn't so scared of the cats hurting her! The variegated frydek is looking amazing now!

We've been having a super hot but also very humid summer where I live. I hate it but my plants have never been happier, so at least that's something!

As it happens, I am falling in love with pon-replanting all my plants to pon- after a continuous fungus gnats attack that I could not handle 😢I’m going soil to pon. I love how honest you are, thank you. It helps to hear that not always it’s all about success (I will stop beating myself up for killing my ficus) x

This video has been so helpful I’ve been having the same problem with my syngonium albo like yours my roots were fine but it kept loosing leaves and was leggy and had a fantastic root system. So watching this has given me the courage to chop and start again 😊. Thanks so much for your brilliant videos 😊

Alocasia did the same thing for me; it was a baby plant and then BOOM it popped a giant leaf out that was like six steps up from the previous lead 😆 That anthurium regale sure looks sad above the soil, but it’s roots are just gorgeous wowza. Loving this chatty chore vid :)

I noticed your anthurium medium is a bit soily. I was told that they don’t like much soil if any. I was also told that they don’t like temps above 75-80 degrees F.

Hey Claire! So cool to see you getting into semi-hydro, it’s such a salvation for people with lots of plants. I just thought it was worth popping a comment that I have had extraordinary luck with all my ficus in leca. They LOVE it. It looks salvageable! I wouldn’t want to assume you don’t know or haven’t already thought of this, but if I were you I’d maybe take an old toothbrush and brush the remaining soil off the roots under water, and then stick the whole thing in pure hydro with some rooting hormone like a water prop, reroot and THEN go semi hydro. I know Leca Queen refers to it as the long method. The soil roots do slough off eventually just like they do in pon or leca but it gives the plant a good hydration therapy to carry on, and bridges that risky gap where they don’t get a proper drink before growing sizable water roots. At any rate I just thought I’d say my ficus are one of my happiest plants in semi hydro (my succulents and cactus too. Hehe.) Out of curiosity, what lead you away from using leca?

I only have a few plants on moss poles and I’m just scared to death. They are all in a super chunky mix but in trying to keep the pole hydrated I just fear overwatering because it is my helicopter plant mom cardinal sin. It’s hot outside so my struggle bus is that the AC is on a lot and it’s drying things out even with my humidifier almost always on. Plant momming is hard! 🤣

Hey there Claire thanks for a great video; I'm particularly in love with your variegated frydek 😍. I've had 2 x baby Ficus Shivereana Moonshine shrivel up in this heat (London subbie here). The larger one and my Tineke and Belize have been THIRSTY! My big Jade plant in my oven-like, airless kitchen has developed white mould (looks like puffs of cotton wool, definitely not mealie bugs) so trying but losing the battle to improve airflow. The aur in my flat just feels like I'm stirring a pot of warm soup🙈

Claire, I mostly just use ordinary nursery pots for my semi hydro these days with a small reservoir in the cover pot. It is very easy to manage and you don’t get that horrible algae bloom. Every plant I own, including cacti and succulents are in Leca. My Ficus (several different varieties) are huge and obviously love semi hydro. The only fail so far has been Syngoniums which I have given up on. I’m excited to see how your Hoya gets on in semi hydro! (One of my wish list plants) One thing I noticed is that you don’t seem to use nutrient solution in your Pon. Is there any reason for that? My latest fun experiment is attaching a ric rac cactus cutting and a few Thanksgiving cactus cuttings to a moss pole which I have an Adansonii on, the theory being that they are epiphytes so they should attach.

You should use larger pots for big roots , many times the plant suffers from cramped roots .

Thanks for this as always, Claire! One video idea: would love to see a side-by-side comparison of the various substrates available, with pros and cons for each. I am also pretty new to PON here and haven’t ventured into it yet. Your experience almost makes it sound like a silver bullet substrate, but I’m sure it’s not quite that perfect! In any case, would love to see a deeper dive on your experience with all the substrates!

I've not used pon as a permanent substrate a lot (I prefer soil for all my plants), but I root all my cuttings in pon, and if a plant is struggling (root rot, import, etc.) I put it in pon. It's like a hospital substrate. It has literally solved ALL my plant problems!

My focus tineke is being a full drama queen at the moment and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to save it, but I’m trying to, I only have regular houseplant compost though, I’m going to be looking into getting some things to mix in to make my soil easier to drain

Geo the purple form I loved the plant when I got it but it came in Coco coir an we all know how the nats love that stuff but when I reported up it went into shock an unfortunately it is a one leaf plant now an I just don't fell like caring anymore I'm watering if but I just want to put it outside on the curb.😮

Ficus do much mch better outdoors. Jst leave your ficus Shiveriana outdoors and it will surprise you Give it about 6 months or so

Hey. I finally got the alocasia that I have wanted for years. They had it at Lowes for not even half what it is online. It is the alocasia California. I love big plants. If I repot it, what would you suggest I pot it in? Does it like to dry out? I just want this one to live.
