A Resin Experiment That Went Wrong - This is Ugly shows that not all the experiments that I do work out well. I apologise for the amount of laughing I do in this video, but it always makes me laugh when things turn out really ugly or when an experiment goes wrong. Resin can be a great medium to work with, but when it goes wrong resin can be horrible. I like to share the good and the bad with you so we can all learn from it.

This reminds me of a vase wrapped with yarn I tried to make when I first started. Turns out, yarn is pretty absorbent! 😂 Wasted so much resin and ended up with a very ugly, expensive doorstop! LOL Oh and yes, I've done this one a few times with the same outcome you got! Now I make a flat circle and while it's still pliable, put it over the inverted bowl to form. Thanks for sharing this Steve!

Such a promising start, big fluffy feathers, nice bubble-free resin, big shiny bowl snaffled from the kitchen ...hey, it might not have turned out exactly as you envisioned but it'll make lovely landfill :) If they refuse to take it at the Corporation Dump there's a half empty skip just 2 doors down from me, it could be arranged for a fiver, nudge nudge, wink wink, know what I mean, say no more!

When you started I thought "Why would this be ugly? It looks so cool" and then the end product, oof! I think the rounded ends of the feathers are a big part of the "look", so cutting that bit of interest off definitely didn't help. I'd love to see a bowl with just one layer of feathers and just a thicker layer of clear (maybe with a little shimmer or sparkle) above and below to make it smooth and structurally sound.

Hey, if you don't experiment, you don't know what works and what doesn't. Just because it didn't turn out beautiful (which, as we know, is in the eye of the beholder), doesn't mean it's a failure or is hideous. It just means now you can try something else ;-) LOVE watching your videos, Steve!

You guys I have to share my most recent fail with y'all. So I had a great idea to put this really pretty white tulle with teal sparkles in a resin necklace I'm made. I was imagining it turning out vibrant super vibrant amd sparkly. Much to my dismay, when I demolded the thing the glitter came completely off. It was just floating around, and you could hard see the tulle. Like I had to do a squint to even notice it was there. So I thought to myself this isn't too bad. It looks pretty normal. I went to take a picture of it so I could eventually sell it, and I guys it looked hideous! The tulle made the heart necklace look like a bunch of scratches, and the tiny little pieces of glitter looked like little specks of black dirt all though it, not good at all! Maybe someone out there would appreciate the creativity that went into it looking at it from face value, but nobody in their right mind would want to buy this thing judging from the pictures. Epic fail!!! 😂🤦‍♀️

Oh dear!! Just as you said it, I said it, Hideous!!! 😝lol!! When you said you were using clingfilm I sat watching with my eyes partly shut, I knew what was coming, as I've done the exact same thing myself. I ran out of my spray, and thought I'd give it ago!! Om!! Disaster, I quickly threw it in the bin, and waited for my mould release spray to arrive... Foil has the same effect, I couldn't shift the foil! Lovely bowl, I tried painting it, it got worse, so, yes, over the many years of crafting, jewellery making, and BJDs, resin and I have had many a run in in open battle! Great video! Thanks, and Happy New year! 👍😊

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's not THAT ugly. My hubby has used plastic wrap to cover the 2x3s we use as mold forms when he uses the Bondo fiberglass resin, minus the fiberglass. Maybe a different resin? We've never had a problem with the Bondo brand car resin. It heats up as well. You did say you wanted a thicker bottom as well. Therefore it was just half bad. Lol

I recently made a resin mistake I would like to share here. I poured 3 ounces of resin and then 3 ounces of hardener and started stirring... but nothing was happening, no indication of 2 different thicknesses of liquid to blend. I realized I had actually poured 6 ounces of one or the other, but I couldn't tell which. Based on the thickness of the 6 ounces I assumed I had poured 6 ounces of hardener by mistake, so I split that in half and added 3 ounces of resin to each of those 2 cups. But again nothing happened. Now I had 12 ounces of hardener without resin. Again I split it out to 3 ounces in each cup and very carefully poured resin and at last I had the intended mixture. Now I had 18 ounces of the mixture and needed to get it all poured within 30 minutes, I made each cup a different color. Have you ever made that much at one time? Let me tell you, it fills up a LOT of molds. I pulled out all my bigger molds, plus my intended ones and had filled molds on every surface in my art room. Leaving it over night, I came back to see how everything turned out. One color set up as usual. One hadn't set up at all and the third was like sticky taffy that hadn't been pulled yet. I could not possibly get those last 2 color sets to come out of the molds. It was a heaping pile of goo! I was afraid all the molds would be ruined! Today its 2 weeks later. None set up like normal, but finally they were like rubber and I could pull them out with a lot of twisting and pulling. The point of it all! Mark your mixing cups at the same time as you pour part A or B so you never have my mess to clean up.

Hey, at least it didn't go BOOM!, right? I tried to make a molded box with white feathers in resin which went from clear to light blue. The result was that they practically disappeared save for the spiky veins down the center of the feather. So back to the drawing board. I wanted the effect of fluffy feathers falling through a blue sky, not the disappearance remains of a drowned pidgeon. So I picked out the fluffies of the bag (feather tip- if your feathers are looking bedraggled, old them over the steam hole on your kettle and they will plump right up) Anyway, I sprayed them with clear shellac while in a cardboard box to keep them in place, and then sprinkled them with white iridescent glitter. Let them dry, turn them over and repeat the process. hey are still fluffy looking and very sparkly. I have not tried them in a resin project yet. Instead of giving up on the bowl, why not slowly build up another layer or two of clear resin on the outside, then add another layer of ostrich plumes (shellac sprayed or not, glitter optional...heh. I know you and glitter... Then apply them, then another layer of clear until it is the thickness and looks the way you like!

Channels that do not Keep It Real are quickly eliminated from my Subscribed list. In spite of the textured outside maybe add some gold paint, glitter &/or foil in random areas to create a different look. You might have to add a bit more resin on the outside to adhere the plastic shreds. Maybe a layer of resin on the sides would help offset the thick base. The fact that you laugh at yourself is endearing. Your humor adds to the entertainment value of your informative channel. I always look forward to your posts.

Hey Steve, have you tried mixing acrylic paint in a small amount of resin and using it to paint your mold before you pour the rest of the clear resin in? I have wanted to try this, but I have been worried that it would ruin my mold
@agentcallisto
@agentcallisto 3 года назад
I know it’s late, but here’s my two cents: You can paint directly onto the mold with acrylic paint and it works great as long as you let the paint fully dry before pouring in resin. Also be sure to seal it afterwards or the paint will rub off. If you mixed the paint with a little bit of resin all it would do is inhibit the cure of the resin (since the ratio of water to resin would be too high).
