A resto-mod ELECTRIC Porsche 928?

I pop in with the 928 to the guys at Electrogusto, who specialise in converting classic cars to Electric power for a chat with Nick and Shane. Before you get your knickers in a twist, hear them out. We don't want to chop up a perfectly good car - too many 928s already are sitting in garages unused or rusting away in gardens. We want to do a Lazarus, and give a new life to one that had no chance of ever returning to the road with petrol power. That's the plan anyway. We have to start the discussion somewhere!
A 928 that goes, handles, brakes, turns, drives, feels and SOUNDS like a petrol 928. With plenty of power and a useful range. That weighs no more than the car it started life as, but goes even better. What's not to like?
As always, we value your opinion. Tell us what you think.

First And that guy made a lot of sense about old cars It’s true they’re great to look at but when they break down it’s a pain in the backside. Very informative video

Looking on with interest! Can’t wait to see how this might develop. Good work Stu. I’ve always loved the design of the 928. A real beaut….

Watching on with interest. Very keen to see how you preserve the original 928 exhaust character.

I think those Milltek (and other brand) active exhausts to be both appropriate and amusing for a project like this. The tone of the generated sound is tunable though the app that comes with it. Much better than just piping a synthetic sound through the cabin's speakers.

@@inCARnationAustralia I hadn't come across this tech before but it's very fascinating and I guess closer to a combustion engine given the location of the sound. I'm really not sure how I feel about it. Hopefully there are specific 928 tones.

@@OzJustin To be honest I'm not sure how I'll feel about it too. The clincher will be the driving experience but the sound is important. But if Singer or someone like that did a restomod 928 I think the 928 community would be gushing with support even though it's not 'the real thing'. We'll see. It's not going to be an overnight project.

Well the 928s were all about the weight distribution, that's going to be the hard bit on your conversation. I'll go the twin turbo cayenne conversation, now that would be awesome but do it on a 89 onwards car, much much better vehicle.
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Год назад
We plan to use modular 'brick' style batteries, most front some rear. So we can get the weight balance just right.

It's an idea I have been toying with for my E9 CSL. Given the car no longer runs its original engine, I was thinking why not change it up even more. Would make a great city car and reliable for the kids to use too.

Hoping that this epiphany progresses to reality Stu. I think you're on the right balance of head vs heart, and I look forward to riding along with your trials and tribulations.

Mate, if I can afford to do this, I'll definitely be modelling the matching T-shirt. And probably flogging them on the channel to pay for it. Good suggestion.

Well I'm for un recoverarable 928 (engine not body) EV conversion A lot of donor cars out there, ending up derelict why not save it to run again Can't be anyworse than those horrid wide body, butchered Turbo, kowered bling cars out there

In my honest opinion i don't think such a project is worth your time. Not with this type of car anyway. The costs involved and potentially lukewarm results would not be worth it. I personally also don't believe an electrical conversion of a classic car will ever be sought after and valuable. If anything, more conversions will make the original examples rise in value. It's better to part out and scrap poor examples of classics. Individual parts are invaluable to owners. Just my two cents.

A realistic comment. You're probably right. I have little doubt it would be simpler just to keep fixing up my current 928 (which I intend to do anyway) and buy some high perf EV as a daily runaround. But I am really curious to see if I can make the 928 perform better than a 928GTS without weighing any more. I don't want a lukewarm result.Call it a vanity project if you like, and yes it makes little sense from a financial viewpoint. But I know people who spend fortunes on their racing cars, or train sets, or boats, or planes. I think the personal satisfaction I'd get out of having a 928 that I can drive every day at very little cost would make it worthwhile to me.

@@inCARnationAustraliaas a fan of slightly odd / non-mainstream cars, I often hear conservative people who profess to be car fans saying "is it worth it though?". It's like they all worked in the accounts department of GM. All that matters is whether it's worth it to you. Go for it!

One of the big selling points of electrification for me is to finally have a quiet vehicle, installing speakers to produce annoying engine noise is completely kooky.
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Год назад
The good thing is you can turn it on an off as you wish. Leaving the house early on a Sunday morning for a drive, or if you want to listen to the subtleties of the stereo - completely silent. But the quiet burble of the 928 is one of its great characteristics. And it's not speakers inside the car. It's a real steel muffler with an electronic transducer inside. I'm also not a fan of the fake noise pumped through the stereo, even though it is standard on some cars you wouldn't expect - Yaris GR, Audi SQ7, etc. Thirdly, whenever I mention this 928 EV idea, I get so much pushback from current 928 owners who also think it's kooky for not having the 928 sound. I would like a car that (a) can be silent when I want and (b) astonish people that it's not ICE because it sounds exactly like one.

@@928pcar No I say 9-eleven. But nobody says 9-ninety-six. It's nine-nine-six. And in Germany you'll find most people say neun-two-acht, not neun-acht und zwanzig. So it varies from model to model. Both perfectly valid. No need to be precious about it.
