A Ride on a Tramcar through Belfast, 1901 (w/ Sound!)

Filmed on May 27th, 1901 by Sagar Mitchell & James Kenyon, this was shot from atop a horse drawn tram along Royal Avenue, turning onto High Street, and terminating at the Albert Clock in Queens Square, Belfast, Ireland. It was shown as part of an exhibition at the Ulster Hall in May of 1901. Billboards can be seen advertising the event, and the North American Animated Photo Co, a UK company that commissioned many of Mitchell and Kenyon's films. The terms "movie" and "film" were not in common usage in these earliest days of filmmaking, and the term "animated photo" was still vying for the film lexicon. These films were exhibited in halls, saloons, or whatever local venue could be procured at the time, with dedicated movie theaters being over a decade in future.
Mitchell & Kenyon operated under a business model which had them traveling to cities all over England filming citizens and landmarks, and then renting local venues to sell tickets. Local folks were eager to see the new and novel moving photographs of themselves and friends, even more so than exotic locations or famous individuals. Mitchell & Kenyon Film Company started in 1897 and operated to the mid-teens. During this time Mitchell and Kenyon inadvertently generated a wealth of documentation of everyday live in Edwardian England. In 1994, a cache of films were discovered in the basement of a photo shop that was about to be demolished. These films comprise the largest collection in the world of actuality films from the early 20th century.
This version of the Belfast film has 18 channels of sound design by Mike Upchurch. Mike is a comedy writer by trade, and does sound design on old films in his spare time.

if you listen very very carefully .. from 1.07 to 1.11 seconds you can hear a small child singing the famous Molly Malone song !... that song became popular around 1880s .... how amazing !

Not so, people took regular baths just like they do today only now its mostly showers. But sex was a subject that was off limits for most people back then. The main reason? No contraceptives, plus the majority of folks went to church every Sunday. Not like nowadays.

It was just a normal thing to wear, people didn't have cars and riding in a horse and carriage could be windy. As more people drove and buildings started to have central heating, widespread hat wearing became less common. It's the same reason a lot of people wore three piece suits. Obviously it was just normal back then, but people didn't have centrally heated homes so you needed warmer clothing, even in doors.

I wonder if it was possible to be lonely in those days. The sheer amount of people is just stunning. And those guys pushing the carts with big advertising signs on them. Wow. And the double decker trams. Today, people seem to do everything possible to avoid each other. Back then it didn’t seem possible. I wonder if there had been a better sense of community and a genuine feeling of common purpose, or if it was just the same old rat race.

There's plenty of fire hydrants, just not as found in the USA/Canada. They're below ground level and covered with a metal cover. Still the same today. A vertical pipe is screwed to the hydrant outlet by the firefighter and a hose connected at 90 degrees at the top. Below ground they don't get damaged by vehicles, etc. (but do tend to silt up).

Indeed, there is Heaven and there is hell, and you dob't need anyone to tell you that because it is God Himself who created us who revealed that in His Word in The Holy Bible. Come to The Powerful Ever Living Gid Jesus Christ and He will forgive you the years of ignorance, stupidity, lunacy, blindness, sin filth and foolishness; and He will raise you from the spiritual death that you languish in as He rsised Lazarus from the dead by the Power of His Divinity so that after your death you can go and enjoy eternal Life with Our Lord and God Jesus Christ.
