The Washington Dulles International Airport Aerotrain has already been in service for roughly (a little more than) 4 years. These mobile lounges are still in service for the "D" gates and they are still running strong at the time of this video. I was happy to go on a "D" gate this time because I got to ride the Mobile Lounge. From now on whenever I ride these mobile lounges, I'll get my last videos while they last. Recorded on April 15, 2014.

They used to transport passengers from the central terminal directly to airplanes. They would lift themselves up and form a covered passageway with the airplane door. It was like a transportable gate waiting area.

Mobile Lounges are just huge buses on stilts. Aeortrain is much more efficient.

These things seem to have a huge amount of wasted space in the middle? Why don't they have more seats?

Because most of the passengers are expected to stand in them because the trips are fairly quick on them

They have drivers. I was friends with one of them back when I worked at Dulles

This one was to connect the main building to the concourse out in the mid-field, without having to build a tunnel or a people mover. Later a tunnel and people mover was built. As for the mobile lounges that actually go to the plane, it was an early idea of how to lessen the walk from the check-in (there was no security when IAD was built) to the aircraft. The alternative at the time was very long finger piers. Many European airports still bus passengers to remote stands.

Dulles airport has three main terminals that are unconnected. Main terminal, A/B terminals, and C/D terminals. The mobile lounges were made to transport people between buildings. In 2010 automated aero trains were installed to get people between shorter distances
