Just stumbled across this video. Great content. I have a non-exported Winchester model manufactured in Dec of 1918. I don’t know a thing about its history. Was in my father’s gun cabinet as long as I can remember and I got it when he passed away.

I bought a sporterized 1917 back in 1983 and shot the crap out of it for years. I eventually sold it to my brother in law and it still shoots sub 2 MOA with the original 1917 dated barrel and stock trigger. It’s a beast!

@@HistoryinFirearms not necessarily, probably just an infantry company. During 1940 and most of '41 there was a belief that Britain would fall to the Nazis and the US offered to keep Canada free and supplied with weapons. As a home defence unit the 6th Div would have been expected to be supplied with American ordinance in the event of failure. The US were extremely concerned that Britain would be forced to surrender and the fleets of the Royal Navy would fall into German hands but if they could convince Churchill to send the ships and the Royal family to Canada then the US would be in a position to help Canada defend themselves. This rifle was a small but significant part of that effort.

The RCAF in the early days of NATO used the .30/06 in small arms used for base defence primarily in Europe. About six thousand M1 rifles were bought from the USA for this. I also heard some BAR's were obtained by the RCAF for base defence, but I do not have solid info on the BAR's.The P14 and M1917 rifles are good even after over 100 years.

The Canadian M-1917’s were NOT lend lease. Canada purchased them directly. I believe most of the M-17’s that went to Great Britain were also purchased, before the lend lease act. In Canada, they were used in training centres, by the Veterans Guard of Canada, the RCAF, and a few others that I can’t recall at the moment. They were also the primary arm of the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers, to whom they were issued complete with bayonets and steel helmets. At the end of the war, the rangers were allowed to purchase their rifles for $5. The majority of the remainder were later given to Norway, who in turn gave them to Denmark. Many of the Canadian rifles had serial numbers on the bolts, the result of the rifles being shipped to Canada without the bolts. Armourers had to go through the bolts, check headspace, and apply the rifle’s serial number to each matched bolt. I don’t think the rifles came from the US government, either. I seem to recall that the US sold them to a dealer, who then sold them to Canada.

The Netherlands were desperately short on rifles in their colonies like the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) after losing their home country (Netherlands) because of Nazi-German occupation in 1940. They therefore ordered numbers of US Enfield model 1917 rifles in the USA. I have seen pictures of Dutch soldiers training with them in 1941.

I just acquired a 100 percent Winchester matching rifle that was an early but very tasteful spoterization. I am extremely happy with the result. The one thing i do not like is that the front sight was removed and a sporter block style was soldered on top of it covering the manufacturing date. If I ever find a competent gunsmith, I would like that to be reversed. The stock is chopped as well, but like i said, tastefully. Also the bunny ears have been grinded off.
