Great timing for this video as I’m doing the London to Brighton off road on Saturday on my specialized tricross. I’m going up against some Mtb mates who don’t think my bike is up to the job, so hopefully I will prove them wrong.
To be honest, I am too lazy to clean my bike after every ride. Don't get me wrong, my bike is cleaner than my room and I just want it to bling all the time. I guess I do spend enough time cleaning it, even though I only ride on dry roads. Greets from Austria :)
GCN is at their very best when they take us riding with them! Thanks guys, personally I am ready to see more of England from your bikes. I will probably never afford to go there, but the country side looks beautiful to me! Keep the great riding shows coming they inspire the rest of us to get out and ride!
I live in NW North Carolina, USA. You guys should come ride here, I live in the foothills, but, the Blue Ridge Mountains are only 60 miles away. People come from all over the world to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. Where I live it is gently rolling hills and almost no traffic. We have a well established Amish Community to boot and many great wineries as well. You guys should do a Grand Fondo here, My wife and I would love to ride a few miles with Emma! She can bring any of the boys that she likes!
I love how Emma is so tiny and pocket sized and smiley and friendly, yet she is a beast on a bike and could undoubtedly FLOG most of us who watch GCN :-D I still miss Matt's hijinks, but Emma's been a great addition to the team. And Si is always great.
My 12 year old races CX and he's in his third season. This video came at the perfect time, because now I'm considering CX as well. These lessons will go a long way for me. Thanks for another excellent video.
Yeeeww! Just started cyclocross a couple of months ago and love it! You'll love it Emma!! :) I've found it's been good to break up the boredom of just doing so many hours on the road. Having that bit of variety has helped kept me motivated with my road cycling. It's also helped with my bike handling skills - so great cross training for sure.
Well, Matt was never exactly a graceful human, y'know? And Emma's one of those people who's just naturally really good at everything. So that does make a bit of difference.
As kids in those pre-mountain bike days (pre-anything really) if we got hold of an old bike (ladies one preferably to lessen chance of spoiling the chances of fatherhood) we would strip them down, paint them psychedelic (come on; it was the mid 60's) and voila - an off-road bike, or as we called them 'Trackers'. If you had a tracker in our neighbourhood, you were somebody! My dad found an abandoned one in a friends commercial garage. I still remember the excitement when he brought it home for me. Happy days!
There's a huge CX community in Philadelphia with at least 1/2 races every weekend. Great atmosphere with beginners/kids/old folks riding right along with pros. Y'all should come out to race at at the Sly Fox Brewery in November!
11:54 Emma saying she's worried about getting on and off the bike while simultaneously demonstrating a perfect dismount to run. Damn her natural ability!

So much fun, something more dirty, like mud, off-road, close to the nature ... yes we have something like that and it is called MTB and we have big tubeless tires and suspension and comfort is out of the compare to Cyclo-cross bikes :D Love Emma!
Single Speed Cross is the most fun I've ever had on a bike. It's also fun to do long quasi-cross events. I'm actually entering the SS division of a local marathon XC race on a cross bike this fall.
Fun! I am a roadie at heart, but going to school in the northwest, they pull you into CX pretty quickly. I never stuck with it, but it's definitely a fun change for a couple months in the fall! Really exciting.
While I've toiled the summer away training for the cross season in New England USA, hoping for mid-pack in cat 5, you'll likely podium your first race, Emma. Can't wait to see you do it. This is gonna be great!!!
Awesome timing! I bought my first road/cyclocross bike just a few weeks ago. Last weekend I went into its natural terrain=the wood for the first time and it was amazing fun! I seem to have a natural instinct for a few of the techniques but obviously, lack much experience on drop handlebars etc. Still, I was astonished how capable the bike and how safe I therefore felt - roots, sand, steep decends - nothing seemed a problem. Can't wait for the next weekend and I will definitely try to learn along with you, Emma! Have fun!
I am trying CX this year on my Diverge Gravel bike. Thanks for the tips. Good to see Si changed up the step thru dismount to the back foot down first. Easier for beginners and safer.
Some great tips in here thanks. I'm just starting out this season in the cxne league and finding cross much harder than I thought it was. Lots to try, thanks si and emma
Great new serial and Simon and Emma are perfect for it. I even like the back flash there Simons last apprentice show his skills :) Emmas spunk and grit for try new things in bike riding are amazing see! Maybe the rodies will lost a soul? Si as always great and his soul belongs to the cyclocross! I self have not a cyclocross but a MTB I use for rides when the rode are in snow.
Great to SEE EMMA on GCN Channel as she is a NATIONAL TREASURE... I took one look at the bike she was riding and it looked a real piece of kit... She made a few comments herself about how she felt confident on it so I am wondering what bike was it she used to tackle her first Cyclo-Cross adventure??? Cheers... StanDMan
Great start on CX! I can't wait to see the next cyclocross videos. I just started racing CX this fall - it's way out of my comfort zone but it's been great to try something new! I'd love to hear tips to build fitness/endurance for the 30-60 minute full gas efforts. It's hard!
I'd like to see the G.C.N. team tackle riding super sport motorcycles :) seems like some of the principles are the same... target fixation, looking ahead, picking a line, and so on.
Love this series! Always curious to see just how much gnarl you can do on a rigid fork and with road geometry. (Especially being a hybrid rider myself)
Emma's bike is a gravel bike, not a cyclocross bike. frame would be hard to use in a cx race and the bottom bracket is a bit too far backwards too. There is obviously some argument to be had whether the distinction is really important or not and i suspect for most bikes it actually isnt - however her bike would be impossible to shoulder so there is that.
"Don't take a Knife to a Gun Fight'? I recently fronted up to a charity 'Mountain Bike' ride with a Cyclocross bike. There was a lot of giggles on the start line when others saw the drop handlebars and presumed it was a road bike. After a quick stop to drop some air out of the tyres to suit conditions, she flew over the 50km course, 4th across the line and only 5min behind 1st. If I can ever afford to buy a second bike it will be a Cyclocross.
Well done on the nice finish, but I presume that must've been a very mellow mountainbike course :). We have lots of tours in Belgium as well where you're faster on a cyclocross bike, but everyone takes their mtb. Can't all afford 5 different bikes :)
About to start my 2nd full season in the North Wales cyclocross league in a couple of weeks, I'm not fast or that good but its great fun and has improved my bike handling a lot. Still panic when it comes to really thick mud though and quite often fall off.
Hey Si, I prefer to lower my saddle slightly compared to road riding because it makes the bike easier to handle in technical sections! (Think dropper post....) Cheers,
Great video GCN. Will be attempting a second session in the 'fun women's' cyclocross section in Wales. Will watch these videos and try to pick up some new skills to try 😀👍
Sven Nys, has come to a few of my previous team's outings to put on a clinic, have some fun, and raise some money for a deceased teammate's scholarship fund. A classy ambassador for cycling and XCross.
Awesome video as always! How cool though would it be to get Matt in this one??? :( Maybe get Emma and Matt attend a cyclocross race together??? Miss you Matt...
