A Road that You Can't Cross (Peace Arch & Point Roberts)

Just south of Vancouver, Canada, there is a road that was illegal for you to cross at the time of the filming of this video. And yes, you could still do that, but breaking the law does not bring severe ramifications (it seemed like). I will take you to Peace Arch's 0th avenue and Point Roberts across Boundary Bay to show you how the COVID-19 brought severe issues to the border between United States and Canada.

Before the mid 2000s, you could cross into Canada and back with no problem. You showed your ID, they asked you some questions, and you went on your way. I lived near the USA/Canadian border, we visited Canada all the time. I don't know what happened (9/11?) or why it happened. I miss the simplicity of crossing.

This might not be obvious to some people, but do you see the two women at 7:38 in the background? The far woman is American and the closer one is Canadian. The atmosphere at the US-Canada border looks more relaxed and friendly than my home in Texas on the US-Mexico border , I live in Nye , Anna ave street . My house is near the Rio Grande River. Just open the back door and see Nuevo Laredo Mexico.The border here is only a river separating the two borders

Before 9/11 it was even more relaxed and friendly. I didn't need a passport to cross, all I needed was a birth certificate or a drivers license and they never even asked to see it, they usually just asked your citizenship, where you were going and for how long. Now because of that idiot Bush I need a passport and I have to show it every time.

@@kenlompart9905 Yes, lately law enforcement agencies such as the US Border Patrol have been patrolling along the Rio Grande river very often. Because a lot of Haitians and Africans from African countries have migrated across the Rio Grande River. because some parts of the river are narrow And rarely see Mexicans and Latin Americans these days

I wish the US/Canadian border would open back up to what it used to be. Where all you needed was a driver's license and the residents of the border towns were free to cross over without customs (as long as they stayed in town and went back to their side). Maybe this should be looked into again with the new Real IDs.

Real ID can be a good solution, but with the US constantly pushing it back, there is no forseeable solution in the next few years.

There should be Szcengen Zone between Canada, U.S and Mexico without any border checkpoints. In Europe the European countries that joining the European Union they have a right after 10-15 years to apply to join for Szcengen Zone without border checkpoints. This 2023 year Croatia joined Szcengen Zone they waited for 15 years while all 28 countries in European Union refused to accept Romania and Bulgaria to join Szcengen Zone now governments of Romania and Bulgaria are very mad

I heard somewhere though that there was a ferry that ran from Point Roberts to the mainland US. That said, it would have been reasonable in my opinion to allow Point Roberts to quarantine with Canada during that time. I think that idea was floated but turned down by both governments.

There used to be a ferry going from a place called anacortes in WA to Point Roberts; Many businesses in Point Roberts complained during covid because the border was closed and they mainly rellied on Canadian customers. You are right, Point Roberts should have been considered part of Canada for quarantine purposes.

I'm looking at this as a European who lives in Eastern Belgium, but only a 20-minute drive to the borders with both Germany and Luxembourg. I frequently cross either border, for leisure or for shopping (at least once a week), no border or customs checks, same consumer regulations and same currency on all sides. During the peak of COVID the hard borders were re-established for a couple of months, the first (and hopefully last) time since 1992 when border and customs checks were abolished within the EU; it felt really bad not being allowed to change country freely.
@kenlompart9905
@kenlompart9905 Год назад
It used to be easier to cross before 9/11. In the 80s and 90s we used to cross the border quite often to go to Buffalo just to go to the bars, beer was cheaper and they took Canadian money at par plus it was a change in scenery. I've been to almost every state on the east coast more than once and before 9/11 all you needed was a birth certificate or even a drivers license as proof you were Canadian but not once was I ever asked to show it. Before 9/11 they would just ask your citizenship, why you were entering the US, and how long you will be staying but after 9/11 that idiot Bush lied and said the terrorists entered through Canada which was easily proven not to be the case and thanks to him we now need a passport to cross the border and they're a lot stricter about it.

I don't understand these kinds of borders. Why don't they have a ferry or special exemption for Point Roberts people? Or better yet, just make it part of Canada. How ridiculous is it to need a passport to enter a section of your own country. Croatians had this problem with Bosnia, and Bosnia finally allowed Croatians to pass through Neum, with just their EU IDs.
