Robbers Roost:
According to local legend, Robbers Roost (also known as Shaman’s Cave or the Hide Out Cave), located northwest of Sedona but visible from any high vantage point in town, was a hideout for bandits and bootleggers, hence the name. While that has never been proven, there’s no doubt this off-the-beaten-path cave with expansive views of the surrounding forest would make a great lair. The trail that leads to the roost is short - only 0.4-mile one way - but steep and rocky. We started our hike at a parking turnout on FR 9530. Note that you need a four wheel-drive and/or high-clearance vehicle to travel on FR 9530. Passenger vehicles will need to park at the start of this steep, rocky road and walk, which adds one mile to your hike on either side.
Honanki Cliff Dwellings:
Honanki and its sister site, Palatki, were the largest cliff dwellings of the Red Rock country between AD 1150 - 1350. The Sinagua, ancestors of the Hopi, lived here preparing meals, raising their families, and making tools from stone, leather, and wood. Nearby they hunted for deer and rabbit, tended various crops, and gathered edible wild plants. They were first described by Dr. Jesse Walter Fewkes, famous turn-of-the century archaeologist from the Smithsonian Institution, who gave them the Hopi names of Honanki (Badger House) and Palatki (Red House). The Hopi, however, have no specific names for these sites.
The Honanki Heritage Site cliff dwelling and rock art site is located near the town of Sedona in north-central Arizona. The site is managed by the U.S. Forest Service under the Red Rock Pass Program. Please review the Archaeological Site Etiquette Guide before your visit.
The road to this site is generally passable to passenger cars when dry, but it is not regularly maintained by the County and has some rough and rocky stretches. High clearance vehicle recommended. The compensation for abusing your motor vehicle are wonderful views of the red rock formations that Sedona is so famous for.

Been up on those trails a bunch of times but never got to the ruins. Seems like they had closed for the day by the time I got there. Outlaw is a fun trail.

Yes the dwelling sites close at 3:00 p.m. I didn't make it to the other site unfortunately, as we were getting tired from the Heat. We only ran about half of outlaw, and only a quarter of the best part. I'll get back out there another time and run the whole thing. Either way it was a great day out with my kiddo

I've done Diamondback Gulch AKA greasy spoon before. We really didn't have much time left this day to do much else. I didn't even get to check out the other Cliff dwelling site on Outlaw.

I didn't think drones were allowed in the wilderness areas? Did you need a special permit?

Drones are allowed in Wilderness areas that aren't marked as "no motorized use" and not allowed in national parks. But yes, in order to fly a drone in a restricted area, you would need to be licensed to do so and get FAA permission. For example if you are filming a commercial or a movie or something along that lines of a special project. With that being said, even I could apply for permission to fly in a national park, but I would have to State my exact flight path and what I'm doing and why. Even then there's no guarantee it'll get approved. The Coconino National Forest is not a no drone zone but you have to make sure you're not at least 5 mi from an airport, and you for sure cannot fly over 400 ft. You definitely cannot fly a drone over the Red Rock secret Mountain Wilderness, or the Sycamore Canyon wilderness.... but the robbers Roost area is not in either of those Wilderness boundaries.

@@BuckinLifeoffroadI was reading into this exact thing the other day and found that for actual defined wilderness areas you can fly into them also long as you don’t take off or land inside of the wilderness area.
