Noddy Holder said that he wrote his best line ever in this song, " Does your granny always tell ya that the old songs are the best, then she's up and rock n rolling with the rest ", if you have ever had a Christmas family party you will have to say how true that line is.
Roy wood wrote his xmas song, but before releasing it he asked if Slade were going to release a record before xmas, he was told no, so he released his xmas record, only for Slade to release this song.
Have to admit that in that shot he does resemble Michael Cain. Never thought of it before. :) I love Slade, though it does get some peoples' backs up, as it's played so much here.
Released in 1973, this song has become a Christmas staple, almost as much as Santa Claus in the UK. It's an excellent little royalties generator every year for lead singer Noddy Holder and Slade. All the comments echo the sentiment that it's not Christmas until Noddy says it is. IT'S CHRISTMAS! On top of that Slade were real rockers back in the day.
Am literally watching a film (Hatton Garden Job) with Michael Caine in it while watching this - and you're feckin' right! Not sure if Michael Caine and Noddy Holder have ever been seen in the same place at the same time. Mind blown.
OMG! He DOES look like Michael Caine. Anyway, the Brits have been listening to this one for about 50 years now, and I'm sure I heard it on the radio yesterday... :) Happy Christmas!
Your face when you saw the really short fringe on that band member (Dave)!! The interesting fashion is the era of music in the early/mid 70s called glam rock which as a genre of its own you should check out- more slade, t-rex/Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Sweet. As for this song along with Fairytale of New York and Rocking Around the Xmas Tree are my fave Xmas songs. When I was at school we used to have a Xmas day out before breaking up for the holidays to a local ice skating rink and they played Xmas music and this song always reminds me of it!
Yes! so nice for someone to mention Wolverhampton, Not Birmingham, I was 18 then and yes everyone looked like that, men and women wore almost the same, but I draw the line at those Mutton Chops🤣
You've been livin under a rock . Glad that the mighty SLADE is helping to drag you out from under !! Many Merries knuckleheads !!! P S They have other songs that are just as good, if not better !
Goodtimes boys quality 👍 " Sladest " is a compilation album with great tunes you might have heard one or two Liam( oasis ) covers one of them .....dont click the gary glitter vid you will get put on a list 🙈😂
It's not really xmas in the UK till you've heard Noddy Holder scream 'IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!!'. For a complete contrast listen to their track 'How Does It Feel' - truly beautiful and really show's national treasure Noddy's voice off to perfection.
Yes British Christmas songs, now youve done this if you haven’t heard…. Wizzard- I wish it could be Christmas everyday The Pogues - fairytale of New York Elton John - step into Christmas Band Aid - Do they know it’s Christmas The Darkness - Christmas time Wham - last Christmas Jona Lewie- stop the cavalry John Lennon - happy Xmas (war is over) East 17 - stay another day Mud- lonely this Christmas Paul McCartney- wonderful Christmas time Shakin stevens - Merry Christmas everyone Boney M - Mary’s boy Child Chris Rea - driving home for Christmas
Noddy Holder, the lead singer of Slade said in an interview that he doesn't need to work anymore he lives off the royalties of this song. Released in 1973 it is played to death every December. Remember this is the early 70's when Glitter was the order of the day.
Love this song so much reminds me of the best Christmases in the 70s when we had poverty, three day weeks, power cuts....but you could walk into a pub and everyone was welcoming because we all had nothing!!
Quite simply the best Christmas song ever! It hasn't dated since the early 70s - and you can dance to it too! Merry Christmas guys and thanks for uploading! 🎅🌲🍻🍗
It doesn't matter your age or musical preferences, shove Slade on at a Christmas party and the place will cheer up and rock! From an age when the bands knew pop was supposed to be fun!
just for you americans....."SO HERE IT IS, MERRY CHRISTMAS"..by slade... is the second most played and listened to song, in british history..only the national anthem "god save the queen" has been played more....in britain...this song, is still the most loved christmas song of all time, (some 45 years after its premiere)...the band SLADE..were, what we used to call "glam rock bands" back in the early seventies, hence, the dodgy hair and clothes...lol.....this song, is so ingrained into the british national consciousness,...we are amazed here in the uk...that you americans, have never heard of it....in britain....this is the first, and last song, played at every christmas party, across the entire country.... its the very essence of what britain enjoys over the Christmas season.....ps...the royalties, slade must have earned over the years, with this song, must be staggering!!
Slade were one of the greatest live bands ever. At a huge festival. Isle of Wight?… perhaps not. They replaced the headliner act. The crowd bood and began to disperse. They were back a couple of minutes later! I was working in Wolverhampton in the early 70s when a pub band ‘Ambrose Slade’, before they shortened their name. Noddy Holder, the singer shouted. ‘We’re going to play a number for you, now. It’s called ‘Open the Door on me Richard, Don’t Close the Door on me Dick’
@@MrsMillwall Thanks, of course it was Reading. No video, but I’ve heard audio of the gig. Can’t remember the first number. If someone mentioned it I would remember, but apparently, the place erupted. Hugely underrated.
I can go even further back. I'm from the same part of the world(The Black Country.) In the 60s the band I was in and Slade, or the 'n Betweens as they were then called, played all the same venues. Countless pubs and of course the renowned "Plaza circuit"
Noddy was in shop buying a new outfit for Top of the Pops. He says to the assistant. "Yav yaouw anythen ter goo with this shirt?" She replies " How about a kipper tie?" Noddy- "Alrooight then, milk an' tew sugass ployz."
Think Bing Crosby may have something to say about that as according to Guinness World Records White Christmas is best selling single of all time, not just for Christmas
It's a great Christmas song, but it's not even the best selling UK Christmas song which is 'Do They Know it's Christmas' (Band Aid). Slade don't appear in the top 10 best selling Christmas songs of all time either, although Wham are in there at #5 with Last Christmas.
Dave is from Wolverhampton, correction he moved to Wolverhampton, I just learnt he was born in Devon, and he looks exactly the same if you see him in the street, he never changes, always wore the biggest platform boots you've ever seen because he's not very tall, all 4 are lovely Noddy Holder, Dave Hill, Jimmy Lea and Don Powell
I will always loudly trumpet Slade's other singles outside of this classic christmas song. You should react to 'How does it feel', 'Cum on feel the noize', 'My oh my' and 'Cuz I love you'
This is the best Christmas song ever. Lifts the spirits 100% This TOTP was back in 1973 I believe. Always gets repeated Noddy Holder ( Lead singer ) crushes it.
It's possible this gets played on UK radio (and in stores) about once every ten minutes during the holiday season; almost as if Christmas hasn't begun until it's played. How much this one tune (the third of 3 No.1 singles Slade had in the year of its release - all of which went straight in at the top - and the first of which was sitting there the night I was born) has netted songwriter and head-screamer Neville 'Noddy' Holder is unknown, but it can't be a small amount.
You mean you were born when Cum on feel the noise was number one! I entered my teenage years to cum on feel the noise at no.1 - 24th march 1973. Was already a die hard Slade fan, so it was just such a wonderful occasion for me!
I have to agree, I've skipped Alexa about 6 times playing modern US Xmas slush music, all I got was The Pogues and Johnny Mathis. Thank fook fur Traditional old style 70s British Xmas music to keep us sane. Your going to have to do Wizzard - I wish it could be Christmas everyday.
1970s 'fashion' was unique in that with hindsight it was so bad! 😆 Slade is still played every Christmas in the UK; along with Wizard 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' and (for a total twist and guaranteed you won't hear it in any USA store!) The Pogues singing 'Fairytale of New York'.
Jill Osler. Oh I don’t know was 1970s fashion that bad. I mean the punk fashion from the 70s still very much influences fashion nowadays. Torn jeans, to give just one example.
48 years after it's first release, it's currently back in the UK Top 30. I read somewhere recently, that every February, the two writers, singer/guitarist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, receive a royalty cheque for nearly a quarter of a million pounds for the amount of times this is played in public in the build up to Christmas. You really need to check out more Slade. They were one of the biggest bands of the early 70's. Only The US didn't seem to 'get' them. They were massive everywhere else in the World. They had 3 singles that entered the charts at number 1. Not even The Beatles managed that. And Slade were one of the greatest live bands ever.
@@charleshill9546 And hold the record for the most encores in Readings history, that is how good they were live, best live band to ever walk on a stage antwhere.
Fun fact: Noddy Holder, the singer, originally comes from the same part of England as Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and, before Robert Plant was famous, Noddy used to drive him to and from gigs in his father's van. Noddy's father was a window cleaner so the van was full of clanking buckets. That was before Noddy was famous too. Robert really rates Noddy's voice and has tried (unsuccessfully) to persuade him to return to a singing career.
Indeed they are, Walsall and Wolverhampton lads, not from Birmingham. This song is a Xmas classic, the fact it's still so popular after nearly fifty years says a lot. And to me it never sounds old either 😉. Slade were a great band 👍
I was 10 years old when this came out and i remember watching this with my Sisters and Brother, now my Grandchildren listen to it. Life flys by so fast.
Wow I've been listening to this since I was 10 years old and that's the first time the Micheal Caine resemblance was spotted. Zulu would have been a very different film with Noddy Holder
Slade are a cracking band, almost ruined by this song. Their innovative way of spelling things is a corker. Cum feel the Noiz is one of my fav songs, ever.
I think the song was recorded in New York on a hot summer's day. The shout near the end, 'it's Christmas' was shouted up a lift shaft to get the echo effect.
Yes you are right, recorded in NY in the middle of a heatwave. The tune itself was written in the late 60s and was intended to be a melodic hippyish song.
How can you not of heard this song ? Wow... This is prob the best and most played Xmas song over this side of the pond. And yes, Noel Gallagher did an acoustic cover of this years back.
Love, love, love this one. I was 14 when it came out so it's been part of every Xmas since then. It's massive in the UK and like the Pogues and Kirsty it heralds the Xmas season here. I love the energy of it. I hope you have Wizard with 'I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day' (Al Murray made a joke about it in one of his clips). Another high energy and visually sumptuous display. So glad you enjoyed it.
