On this episode of #ObjectofIntrigue, we watch a collection manager at Chicago's Field Museum unbox a deep-sea giant isopod. These creatures resemble a roly-poly, and live in the deep depths of the ocean. Don't worry, they won't latch onto you-they're scavengers.

Someone once commented to us that this looks like a facehugger and you know... we can't really blame them.

Speaking as a Brit, this is not what I expected from the title. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jam_roly-poly

Isopods are beautiful!

They really are something to marvel at. One of the best things I've heard about it is that it can go five years without eating. I can't even do half a day.

There's at least one documented case of an isopod eating a goddamn shark's face "But there's no reason to be afraid of these" Really??
@atlasobscura

That poor shark! What a way to go. Worth noting however, that the incident happened in a confined space. On a day to day, giant isopods are scavengers that feed on already dead organisms. And when they do eat still-living prey, evidence suggests that they feed on organisms that move slowly. They largely shouldn't be feared! Just.. maybe don't play dead in the ocean.

Atlas Obscura haha, thanks for the clarification! I actually find these creatures very fascinating and I loved this episode. Still, I wouldn't call a shark a slow moving animal, so it's still frightening I wonder how the isopod latched onto the shark, since the former cannot swim and the latter always swims. Except if that was a bottom dwelling shark that I'm not familiar with...

If I recall correctly, the shark and the isopod were caught in a trap - a confined space! The isopod was probably lying on the bottom of the trap and when the shark swam too close, it just latched on.

What is the movement of the abdomen around frame 1:50? These are pickled. I wasn't expecting movement.

They're *preserved,* not pickled. I know your comment is four years old, but it looks to me like the leg moved either because of air current or maybe someone bumped the table.

Hey Zac, it was "The Carnival of Animals - VII Aquarium", composed by Camille Saint-Saëns and performed by the Seattle Children's Orchestra.
