John Fisher should have extended the lease on the Coliseum since he never intended to stay in Oakland as $1 million in rent is cheap rather than shopping around for a new stadium like this. Why the owners didn't tell Manfred to pound sand and disapprove this move is beyond me. This is a bad look for MLB as you stated. A whole market turned off to MLB.

I appreciate all your hard work I really do!❤️ for me a long time fan of the athletics I’ve turned the page they can play wherever. the best days were when Mr. Haas owned the team since then it’s been carpet baggers this guy never had any attentions of building anything in Oakland I think when the city came through with their part he got overwhelmed and ran. I do wish he would sell the team to somebody here in the Bay Area that loves them like the way I do. Thanks again.❤️⚾️

The A's NEED a white knight to step in. The team can NOT afford to rent a major league park like Oracle or the Anaheim stadium. The upgrades to a minor league facility like the one in Sacramento or Salt Lake City will be costly. Maybe a group in Salt Lake could come forward with the thinking that it would buy some good will in getting an expansion franchise. I doubt that. The expansion franchises will go to the highest bidders wherever they may be. Bill Simmons made a great point about the pending expansion in the NBA. An NBA expansion franchise will likely cost 3 billion dollars all of which will be divided amongst the owners and none of those revenues will be shared with players. There is no longer ownership in any pro sport which has any concern of what might be best for the game. It's now all about the money. Players are no longer players. Teams don't trade players they trade contracts. I got nothing against sport gambling. Let people gamble if they want, but the teams should NEVER be promoting sports gambling. It will destroy the game and it is already doing so to the NFL and NBA but not baseball as it is not bet on as heavily. The game of baseball is in a bad spot. The Oakland A's are in a worse spot. As a baseball fan, it is painful to watch.

The group that owns the minor league team here in SLC is the same group trying to get an expansion MLB team. They are currently building a new AAA ballpark, which is where the A’s would play if they came (and our AAA team would stay in their old stadium for that time).

I'm a disgruntled "sell the team" life-long A's fan who lives just a few blocks from Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. We had season tickets to the River Cats when they were the A's affiliate, starting with the first year in town with Barry Zito and AJ Hinch (cheater). When they changed affiliations we dropped our season tickets. We typically make 6-8 games in Oakland each season, never missing a home opener or closer in like 30 years. All this is to say that the idea of the As playing in my town sounds like a dream come true! BUT, I don't know if we can (should) support it. So confused... Thank you for breaking all this down, Brody.

IF the A's were to play in Sacramento, you could not support this! I too live in the Sacramento market and am an A's fan, but we would not be going. I understand the temptation. I think Sac area A's fans need to be united in this, and that is NOT to support them. They are moving to Vegas (maybe)so, good riddance. It's like a spouse asking for a divorce, but then saying, "Yeah, my new pad isn't ready, so, can I stay with you for a little bit"?

What I've read about the stadium situations in SAC and SLC suggest to me that SLC is the "obvious" choice, in that they'd have their own stadium there. I don't have a problem with MLB testing the waters in Utah but I think that if there's a stadium available in Monterrey, Mexico, it would be a lot better MLB tryout.

Wild idea: Fisher realizes the losses will sky rocket, sells the A’s to a local (gentleman who was interested years ago- forgot his name), drop the crazy Vegas deal, renew the Howard terminal deal and stay in Oakland. Fisher gets his money, A’s fans get an owner who will spend enough to make the team competive, end this terrible idea to move to Vegas).

I don't approve of the A's using Sacramento as a convenience to do their dirty work before going to Las Vegas. Sacramento historically has always been a baseball town, per capita more major league players and managers have come from Sac than anywhere. As a native of Sacramento, I would much rather have a MLB team than the MLS. MLS is overvalued for what they offer, the reason that the Republic has been unable to get enough investors for an expansion club. I root for the Republic like I do for all Sacramento teams but I have no interest in attending their games in person, I find Soccer to be a snore fest. I attended a Premier League match while in the UK, there was more action in the stands than on the field!

I doubt payroll will increase by any significant level during the years between Oakland and Vegas. Revenues won't support the increased costs and they don't have to field a .500 team in Vegas. They just have to get to Vegas. Once they have a better handle on what revenues they will receive then they'll start spending accordingly. Fisher has a business to run and to sink unrecoverable costs into the business makes no sense. The initial version of the Vegas A's probably won't be that much different than the most recent versions of the Oakland A's.

The Miller group in Salt Lake is so desperate for a MLB expansion team, don't be surprised if they give Fisher free rent and a big chunk of the parking and concessions. Still, the losses will be huge without a good TV deal. They'll make more money in Oakland for those 3 years than anywhere else. Money that could of bridged that gap for the HT park. This whole thing is just so infuriating.

I have no idea how anyone expects the A's to be a competitive team in the next 10-15 years. Obviously, no free agent with options wants to be a part of this losing team. The A's farm system is one of the worst with literally only one Top 100 prospect(Jacob Wilson) projected for the next few years. The A's aren't going to be a draft lottery team. Even after the move to Las Vegas is finalized, it's going to take a long time to undue this damage.

Would they really share the stadium with the River Cats? Besides the AAA scheduling issue (the PCL currently plays week long 6 game series from Tuesday through Sunday at one location), are there enough fans to support two teams in Sacramento? Salt Lake is letting them play in the new Bees stadium for 3 years by themselves and the Bees will stay in their current stadium. If I'm the A's I would seriously consider just being a traveling team for a few years. Play all 162 on the road. Could the A's play in southern California from 2025-2027 as the Las Vegas A's? They would play in a huge population area and people living in southern Nevada might drive to the Los Angeles area to watch the team. Drawing 15k-20k in a 45,000 seat ballpark would be more beneficial than drawing 10,000 in a minor league one. ( ie. Sacramento ).

SLC, demonstrating MLB expansion suitability, could quite reasonably expect better crowds than Oakland. The novelty factor augments the showcase rationale. Applying the same criteria, SLC expansion proponents have an excellent sponsorship rationale. I'd bet the the gate and sponsorship money beats Oakland in SLC. TV requirements - another issue, entirely.

In my view, I think John Fisher will do one of two things with the A's & both are designed to make sure that he is immediately free from any financial obligations with the A's. The first is to simply sell the A's to MLB & have them try to figure out where they are going to play from 2025-2028 as well as pay everyone associated with the A's which I think MLB does not want to do. The other is say after this season is done "I am shutting the franchise down on a temporary basis" to avoid paying players & staff & the A's do not exist for 3 seasons while he sells the assets to an ownership group in Vegas who completely re brands the team & gets things like a local TV deal in place along with sponsorship. Then in 2028 (or whenever the new ballpark is ready to open), the new Vegas franchise begins play under this re brand. Meanwhile the A's name, colors & history remain in Oakland for any future expansion team to use.

Good luck trying to hold the City, any city, hostage. If push comes to shove, the City has the ultimate hard ball move, as they can take the A’s 50% ownership interest through Eminent Domain. Einstein - If the City wanted to screw Fisher, they. Could declare the Coliseum and the Arena historical landmarks and one the undeveloped land (parking lot) as permanent open space, which would make Fisher’s $85M investment virtually worthless. Given the bad name & reputation Fisher has earned for himself in Oakland, the City’s residents wouldn’t mind not having that property redeveloped if it means Fisher gets screwed. Since you appear to share similar character (or lack thereof) as Fisher, I pass along a but of advice I received from a very wise client of mine: “Never make an enemy of a person or entity that has the authority to enact laws.” That’s All.

@dorothygale1104
@dorothygale1104 9 месяцев назад
Keep in mind that the increase in team value isn’t free money to Fisher, as it comes at a cost….a huge cost….primarily the A’s $1.1B+ share of costs to construct the Vegas stadium ($1.5B+ budgeted total cost minus the $380M public subsidy = $1.12B). If total cost to build the stadium is greater than $1.5B, the A’s share increases dollar-for-dollar. So, the A’s team value would have to increase by the anount of ghe $1.1B+ financing olys other relocation costs just to achieve breakeven on the relocation. So, an increase in the team value doesn’t mean that Fisher’s net worth will increase.. Brody’s annual financing cost numbers are way low, as he estimates $50M in interest expense and a loan amount of $900M. The financing will be interest only during the construction phase of the project, but it will either convert to a term loan at completion of construction or it will be refinanced by a longer term lender, which in either case would require principal & interest payments. Given that the A’s have stated that they were dealing with Goldman Sachs on the financing, that means the lower interest rate commercial banks (BofA, JP Morgan Chase) have passed on the financing due to their perceived risk of the financing, which leaves the more costly investment bank financing as the available option. The risk inherent in this financing is that it will not be a true construction loan that is secured by a deed/mortgage on the project being constructed, but rather, it will be a type of business or personal loan to the A’s or Fisher or both, as the lender won’t be able to secure the financing with a deed/mortgage on the stadium, as the A’s/Fisher won’t own the stadium, as it will be owned by Las Vegas Stadium Authority, the same entity that owns the Raiders stadium. The A’s will be a tenant under s 30-year lease, but will pay no rent. So the stadium will not have a source of revenue that would support the $1.1B+ financing. The A’s will be taking on huge debt to finance that vast majority of costs to construct a stadium they will not own. The source of revenue to pay the debt service on the $1.1B+ financing will be from the A’s /Fisher’s operating income. Given the higher cost of this financing, annual degt service in the $1.1B+ financing will be in excess of $100M annually, which means the A’s operating income will gave to increase by $100M+ after relocation for the team’ operation to breakeven, which makes increasing team payroll even more of a pipe-dream.

I remember back in 2001, the Minnesota Twins were the subject of contraction. If the A's can not provide the financing for their ballpark in Las Vegas, will MLB contract the A's from MLB until their finances improve? Or put the team in a dormant status? I know they do this in minor league hockey and the team is revived after new ownership
@HHSGDFootballJPD
@HHSGDFootballJPD 9 месяцев назад
1) Who's your 2nd team to contract (because I don't think baseball would want a team to sit out 3 out 4 days while everyone else plays their schedule). 2) The A's attendance the last few years could probably fit inside a minor league ballpark. And by not having to compete with the Giants, they might get better ad revenue. They'll miss out on RSN (which is dying anyways) and suite revenue, which I think revenue sharing could make up for.

2028 seems far away for the A’s move to Las Vegas. 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 MLB seasons in a temporary location. How can build a team in those years with low attendance and low revenue? I think they should play in Summerlin, expand seating if possible and try to build a fan base in Las Vegas.

They've made their bed, now they can sleep in it.

First of all, Brodie doesn't actually care about the finances of the A's. Look at his track record since the A's announced they wanted to move to Las Vegas last April. Brodie simply likes any story that he can spin to try to make the A's (except the players and coaching on the field) look bad. Secondly, absolutely nothing that Brodie said in this video provides any sort of especially keen or perceptive insight. Every single thing that Brodie talked about was known to the A's before making their decision to move to Las Vegas. And even with all of that, the A's determined the best business decision is to leave Oakland for Vegas.

Hey Brodie I really like the Sacramento site alot. Its pretty close to Oakland and its still in California. No worries about the weather. I don't like the idea of them playing at the Giants ballpark. Sumerlin just to hot and Salt Lake just to far.

Your dire payroll prognostication is not quantified. What's competitive and what does "hit the ground running" mean? The Marlins had a WC berth in the lower tier of teams. Orioles? D-backs? You've set lofty payroll requirements that are unlikely to be met and surely unenforceable vis-á-vis the LV agreement. If rhey get in rhe WC with a $100m payroll, is that going to be "acceptable" to LV? Sure will be.

One thing I haven't heard mentioned is the weather in South Jordan--the site of the new ballpark in Utah. The average summer temperature is between 81-92F. Doesn't sound like a very comfortable temperature range to take in a MLB game. Wherever they end up, if it is anyplace other than Oakland or SF, be prepared for some sweatin' while Mr. Fisher is slummin'

Wait on Oakland for $1 billion dollars? Why should any citizens anywhere in any city pay the bill for a billionaire sports team owner? Look it the A's just wanted a ballpark and not the condos, hotels, retail, office spaces, etc. that Fisher insisted on, hell there could already be shovels in the ground at HT. Don't forget that.

So why do the A's need to spend $100 million a year to increase payroll in '25-'27? I think fans in SLC will go to a) show they can support a major league club and b) watch their favorite players from other teams.

I find it amusing all the issues you come up regarding the A's moving out of Oakland. The more things you try to pile on just shows how bad it would be staying in Oakland if they are willing to overcome all these obstacles. Everything you bring up just does not matter, the A's are still leaving Oakland.

Once again incorrect. It will cost them next to nothing. They will get some great deal to play in Sacramento for a couple years for free, spend little on payroll and get revenue sharing from the rest of the MLB to cover operating expenses. He most likely will actually make more money that staying in Oakland.

If the A's play anywhere but the Coliseum or an actual major league park, why would they play anywhere else but the AAA Vegas park? Are they withholding the A's from Vegas until "Christmas morning" like a child opening a gift. Look at the Memphis Oilers. Cities don't fully support teams that aren't theirs. Start rallying your Nevada fan base.
