The Elephant Valley Project in eastern Cambodia is a sanctuary where aging captive elephants can live out their days amid the forested foothills of the Annamite Mountains supported by tourism. But tourists stopped coming when the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns began and the world ceased traveling in 2020, leaving the project searching for ways to continue its work with the elephants and the nearby communities.

Amazing initiative. I would like to know if there are plans for those eleventh and the ones coming becoming a self-sustained reintroduced population. Don't know of any conservation project that has achieved that with formerly trained elephants. Congratulations for all the hard work.

Indeed! That would be very awesome and beneficial, more conservation and reintroduction of Asian elephants species Into suitable habitat that the species once occupied would be really incredible. Also read an really cool and insightful Article about rewilding you got to talk about conservation of cool species, also you mentioned in an the article about Cuban crocodile reintroductions in the Bahamas which Cuban crocodiles use to inhabit those landscapes in the past. Those unique and awesome terrestrial adapt Cuban crocodiles would be awesome to have reintroduced in a conservation initiative in the bahaman terrestrial landscapes. And we’re even present on the Dominican Republic, read multiple papers about the Cuban crocodiles past range and paleoecology on those islands and it’s really fascinating that Cuban crocodile were the top apex terrestrial carnivores In the Caribbean islands. And the stable isotope data which showed cuba. Crocodiles lived in a terrestrial rather than aquatic food web. For reintroducing Cuban crocodiles in those terrestrial habitats, the Cuban crocodiles from the guama crocodile farm would be the best population since those Cuban crocodiles are true Cuban crocodiles, based on the genetic data, and have a unique sub set of genes, not found anywhere else, or with the rest of the captive populations, and have longer stronger limb proportions than Cuban crocodiles found outside the guama croc farm and have more morphological distinct features such as more taller snout, larger more recurved teeth, larger horns, and some look almost like voay robustus in skull morphology. But before reintroducing the Cuban crocodiles in the Bahamas or Dominican Republic, there would have to be reintroduced species such as tortoise, rock iguanas, huita rodents, flightless rails and other fauna. Also the African forest elephant really needs a captive population since the species is quite endangered, and only the African bush elephant, and the Asian elephant and its sub species have captive populations.
