In 2023, environmental activist Daniel Frits Maurits Tangkilisan was sentenced to seven months in prison for a Facebook post criticizing illegal shrimp farms in Karimunjawa National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. His involvement in the #SaveKarimunjawa movement highlighted the environmental damage caused by these farms, including deforestation and ocean pollution. Despite the campaign’s success in closing some farms, most remain operational, impacting the island's fishing and tourism trades. Many viewed Daniel's case as a tactic aimed at silencing critics. In 2024, he was exonerated after serving four months in prison. His case underscores the challenges faced by environmental defenders in Indonesia.

Indonesian president had came himself to Karimun in 28 August 2023 for a mangrove planting campaign. And as these activists said, some illegal farms have been sanctioned, but many local farmers are still operating the shrimp farms. The other hand, if the government prohibits all shrimp farming, the farmers will complain about losing their source of income. Karimun is not a big city where you can easily create jobs, it's a region of remote islands. The farmers might should find another source of income and the government should help them to find it. But these activists should also help them to provide the solution or maybe some kind of technology to reduce the pollution from the farming. Not just telling them to stop and die. Because many of these locals don't have high education. They don't want to be thieves or criminals, they just want to work as farmers or anything that could provide their family a legal source of income.

I haven’t eaten animals for around 15 years but one thing I refuse to even feed my cat is farmed shrimp.
