There's no actual law against women driving in Saudi Arabia. But it's forbidden. Two years ago, Manal al-Sharif decided to encourage women to drive by doing so -- and filming herself for RU-vid. Hear her story of what happened next.

Reading through the comments here is incredible. It's astounding to see first hand that people really, genuinely believe that a woman controlling a steering wheel will immediately corrupt her, or turn her into some sort of demon. Words escape me... it's like you can put absolutely anything into a person's head, and as long as they hear and see it enough times they will genuinely believe it. I find that terrifying. Absolutely terrifying. And this woman is phenomenal for standing up to it.

Living in Saudi from past 9 yrs...dependent mobility is a big issue...though lot of things a v good compared to other countries as a Muslim its much easier to fallow my din but i cant deny the negatives. I feel handicapped for always depending on my husband to travel from a place to another.(disturbing his schedule of working hrs.) Also the big Saudi society who so called follower of sharia in my opinion are racist...more than being a good human one needs to be Saudi by origin to be privileged to have a life there. they think only appropriate jobs for women is to teach or care takers as nurses n doctors....n after a long struggle now from past few yrs they have added few more opening to job market for "Saudi women" only... As Muslims they must not deny the freedom of every individual who lives in their country to achieve a better life.there are good number of expat women who are talented n capable to live better but are handicapped. women should be permitted to drive n pursue a career of their choice if they are capable to fit in.

My understanding of him is that he was a great warlord who in his lifetime managed to conquer most of north Africa, the middle east and southwest Asia in a very short period of time. He also brought some women's rights to people that were a breakthrough at the time but are considered misogynist, paedophilic and patriarchal by modern day standards.

I don't get it people acting like she saved a soul from death or did something good. . if you were uncomfortable in you're country go somewhere else ... it's not a big deal

Things will never change in these places if people just run away. Banning women from driving is such a weird thing, especially when other Islamic countries in allow it.

In my personal opinion .. I'm with manal. But we don't have Public transport in Saudi Arabia, We just use cars and we have a traffic jams .. imagine this traffic jams when we let women drive..
@mariaespana6185
@mariaespana6185 10 лет назад
what a banal argument! by avoiding the moral aspect of the issue, you don´t skip the problem. if traffic jams were the main issue here then the question would be why should men be given priority over Saudi roads?(to the extent that women wouldn´t drive so men could do it without any inconvenience.)

Saad. Al-Sahli it´s not one or two women, t is that in certain political environments it is hard to be outspoken. If modern saudi men like you don´t support them, who will do it?? isn´t there anyone willing to stand for their mothers´s freedom?
@raj6408

Saad. Al-Sahli - What a lame argument? It's not about women who are happy without driving. It's about women who intend to drive. It's about giving basic freedom to women to be responsible for their own mobility. The fact that KSA doesn't have public transport makes it ridiculous to deny women to drive. Have some shame as a young man as there are no other countries where women are banned from driving.

You give all women hope, Manal! You are leaving a legacy for the world and the human race--not just the women in your country. Your legacy is one of power and freedom. I do hope women throughout the world will VOTE as well as drive! This is a power, too, that can change the world. May God continue to guide you...I send you Love, Peace, Joy and Light!
