Rebuilding an old model can feel very rewarding. The results can be almost as good as building a new kit, just with some extra sentimental value. Restoring your old kits can also be a great way to improve your construction skills. It's just important to evaluate the model and decide if it's worth saving, or if it's easier and more time efficient to just buy a new kit and start over.
I've got this model several years ago from a friend who builds airplanes and this was his first and last attempt at building a 1/72 scale tank. The build was overall pretty decent except the tracks and running gear where it's clear he had some issues. However these can be, as is often the case, saved with layers of mud, but that's a story for another time.

Fun fact: I narrated this video 2 days after a very invasive visit to my dentist (he and his tools were invasive, not me). So my mouth looked like a No Man's Land and it hurt just as much. I had serious problems trying to pronounce like half of all the English words... and just my luck, I had to narrate my longest video yet. The uncut narration with all the outtakes was over 1 hour long lol. Also, this comment section is absolutely insane xD You guys are the best. LUV YA

At first I thought I'd scratchbuild the entire extra armor kit as used on KV-1E (Ehkranami). But I didn't have enough patience for that. Improvised armor, hmm... I wanted to keep it somewhat reasonable. Russians didn't do much field modifications up until Berlin offensive.

I've been modeling for over 40 years. It's always blown my mind how modelers seem to HAVE to replicate exactly the tank/model they're building. Look at pictures of the day, there was a lot more mods than we would like to believe. Also, there is nothing wrong in adding a detail, no matter how exact or perfect, to bring some visual interest to the model. All of the mods you've done, will only be detected by an amateur war historian. No one else will know. How ever, those added details will impress anyone looking at it. So, don't get your panties in a bunch about historical accuracy. Have fun. That's what it's all about! Kudos. (stronk tenk)

Loved it! The 2nd tank i ever did was like this, a mess of all the glues everywhere it shouldn't be on a plastic and metal model. Stubbornly it was pried apart piece by agonising piece. That tarp idea proved very useful when I lost a very characteristic piece of an engine in my 1/72 Ki-27b model, which I was unable to replicate, and the lack of which would be very prominent - think "Tiger tank missing the exhaust covers" kind of prominent. So I used a two-part epoxy, rolled it flat, put a piece of aluminum foil underneath, and now it's drying on top of the engine cowling, once it's hardened I'll finish the model and make a diorama of a Ki-27 captured by Soviet forces in August 1945, with the epoxy "tarp" suggesting it was abandoned on an airfield before an engine trouble could be fixed.

STRONK TENK, Help, I have this b-25j Mitchell model and It’s fallen more times than I remember! It’s broken off both propellers are broken the ball turret wasn’t glued on so I could spin it around and now that’s missing, the first time I made it I left the Bombay doors open and landing gear out after months thought it was silly removed landing gear and closed it ( I used hot glue.... to fix it..... ) the back turret has hot glue to hold the machine gun on both side turrets are missing machine guns it has a terrible paint job ( weathering is crap ) I don’t have olive green so it’s regular green and I don’t know what to do with it! ( also I added figures included into the plane with modifications ) I think it’s by revel but it’s now in very bad shape, please help me remake this plane speaking of broken models I also have a bf-109 from wish it was dirt cheap as soon as I made it parts were broke so I had to fix those right now it has a broken off bomb, crappy weathering, missing landing gear, and a loose window part of the cockpit both of these are 1/43 scale thanks for your time

I always eBay rescue stuff if it's something I was looking at to get anyways. I've put together two 2000pt 40k armies (chaos and eldar) for less than half the cost of new models, just by saving stuff that looked like trash on eBay. Sometimes there's no saving it (they took a heat gun or a handsaw to it for "battle damage"), but usually it's just poor paint jobs that are readily removed and repainted. Or poorly posed figures than can be cut apart and reposed with a bit of cleaning. Except for that time I got an eldar tank that had about 7 layers of latex house paint with rattle can layers in-between. That thing took a solid week of overnight soaking in simple green with daily scrubbings.

I actually did the same with a semi rare bandai model I found at a second hand shop. It is a 1/24 early production Tiger with the rounded cheecks turret made by Krup. It has winter camouflage and very heavy die cast(?) figures. It was missing some parts I tryed to build from scratch. And I weathered it some more along with the tracks. I could be made into a RC piece. It is fully detailed on the inside as well. Suspension works. Motor details really glad I picked that up.
