Further investigation shows it's a primary cell, not rechargeable. However their other branch, Actacell, is showing a patent that may be for rechargeable cells: Patent No: 7,718,319 Issued: May 18, 2010 CATION-SUBSTITUTED SPINEL OXIDE AND OXYFLUORIDE CATHODES FOR LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

Couple of points. A 350 mile range EV would be great, but something more like a 200 mile range is the threshold of acceptability. With ~20 minute, 90% rapid recharging one could drive all day (>500 miles) with only two moderate length stops. About what one does while driving with liquid fuels. Once to refuel and once to eat. A 200 mile range means a lighter and more affordable car. Second, current battery prices seem to now be in the $250/kW range. (out of room)

Since the Tesla Model S can already do 300 miles on a charge, in a large luxury sedan, I'd say your goal of 350 miles of range is already well within reach. I think it would be helpful to compare your goals with the best existing technology today, and provide a specific Wh/kg number you're aiming for. I think the new Panasonic cells Tesla uses are around 250 Wh/kg at the cell level. Recently Envia has claimed 400 Wh/kg.

Panasinic just released a new? NCR18650BR Li-ion cell. Very little information is available except that it is different from the original NCR18650B. The difference claimed is SIO in the Anode. Any comments?

Hi Venkat, I recently heard about german-researchers-create-lithium-ion-battery-retains-85%-its-capacity-after-10000-charges can you shed some more light on this as in how are they different from today's batteries and what made it achievable for them? and when can we see them commercially available.. the cost, safety, reliability and durability of them..stuff like that? could these be the ultimate batteries for EVs in years to come? - Karthik..

Interestingly I've come across Contour Energy Systems who have a lithium fluorine battery, the Fluorinetic. So someone is willing to work with fluorine. Venkat, are you aware of their work?

Hi Venkat, will the Battery Hub seriously consider Li-air battery technology (since you mentioned Li-air batteries in the video) as an option that will be commercialized in 5 years? IBM is betting big on Li-air batteries, what are DOE's expectations on Li-air batteries in next 5 years?

What could achieve with $1 billion in funding in 3 years, leading an international effort of leading scientists. Can you double the storage and halve the cost? Any guestimate on annual battery research spend? US defence spend is 580 Billion p.a!

Hi! I'm a random guy. I hope it's okay if I answer you. Fluorine is a gas and it's toxic (breathing it at concentrations of 0.1% for only a few minutes will kill), so it's difficult and dangerous to work with.
