Scriabins 5th Sonata Performed by Igor Zhukov
The 5th Sonata lies in between the tonal early Scriabin, and the atonal late Scriabin. This makes it unique amongst the other sonatas written by Scriabin. Concieved and documented in only six days, Scriabin didn't write this masterpiece with any consideration for the pianist who must perform this work. This is evident in the many quick jumps, large chords, and stupendious speeds. I have chosen to use the first edition of the score to showcase this amazing recording.
The recording that I'd like to show, is Igor Zhukov's amazing interpretation. Zhukov was born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1936, but his family moved to Moscow only one year later. After being evacuated from Moscow during the 2nd world war his family returned to Moscow, where he studied at the conservatory. He recieved education from Emil Gilels and later Heinrich Neuhaus. His interpretations of scriabins music are, in my opinion, as good as those of Horowitz and (almost as good as those of) Sofronitsky. He is sadly less known in the west, as he was not interested in excessive self promotion, and did not travel much.
This recording of the 5th sonata is my absolute favorite. The incredible clarity of this recording is not only due to Zhukov's incredible technique, but also partially his experience is an audio technician. But still, it is his unique pianistic style that allows his recording to ascend to the great heights at which it lies. The contrast he employs, both in dynamics and tempo, maintains the excitement of the piece. His immense power allows him to perfectly capture the supernatural mood of the climax. But he does not ruin the slow parts by hammering his way through them. In fact the slow parts are as appropiately played as the quick parts. He masterfully maintains the melodies whilst bringin out the chromatic inner lines beautifully.
I hope that others will enjoy this interpretation as much as i do myself.

I agree that this is an underrated recording of the piece, it falls second best for me, only behind the popular Ritcher recording! Thank you for sharing

There are times where the harmony choices remind me of the Debussy's Sarabande and rhythm sounds like a precursor to Reich's electric counterpoint. Astonishing.

Reading the comments, I think that picking apart the choices of the performer performing the music reduces the pleasure one could receive if you just listen without judgement first. Make the necessary corrections of interpretation in YOUR own recording.

It is a really clear recording but it makes the weird timing inconsistencies more noticeable, like at 08:28 where he plays the e# of the quintuplet and the octave c# at the same time which you would do with the rhythm at 3:49
@GUILLOM
@GUILLOM Год назад
He actually doesn't, the E# is played a bit earlier

I don’t agree with many performers use of rubato for this sonata.

For the very lively parts of this piece I think the use of rubato should be somewhat limited, but for the slow longing sections, I think it is needed in order to even play the piece, and even more so to create a great interpretation

Wait, Zhukov the general??
@maestoso9165
@maestoso9165 Год назад
Sadly no. It is only the great pianist and audio technician Igor Zhukov. Although hearing the other Zhukov play would have been... Interesting

Zhukov brings out a clarity in this sonata like no other! I love Ashkenazy's and Lettberg's performance, but no other pianist does it better than Zhukov in my opinion.

When you’ve only listened to Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven and think you are suddenly an expert in musical form: “ah yes, this is is clearly nonsense! Not in traditional sonata form? Atrocious! 🤓”

If you mean nonsense as in fantastical or beyond ordinaryness I can agree to that. I personally think the piece has a very vague sense. It is as if the form and harmonies are behind a thick fog. Although certainly there, they are difficult to decifer

Well, do you also look at an Einstein equation and say this is nonsense, because you don't understand it?

love how the performer completely ignores the rhythmic intricacies of the piece, especially during the slow sections. Jazz musicians are right, classical musicians really ain't got rhythm. What a shame.

Although some rhythms are neglected, I'd say most of his rhythmic choises are perfect. As for classical musicians not having any rhythm, although being true in some sense, it's more of a difference in genre. In jazz, a steady rhythm is very important. In classical, rhythm is much more fluid. Rubato is not as common in jazz

Why do you love this?

all this because because one performer “ignores the rhythmic intricacies of the piece”? isn’t that generalization?
