a season of newts

Hi, I’ve pulled together a bunch of clips of wild smooth newts (Lissotriton Vulgaris) in action. They track a wild newt colony over this season’s cycle, April to September 2017 (South London, UK). In supporting and encoraging them I've tried to create as much 'natural habitat' as possible over the years, adding compost heaps, rock piles, stone piles, wood piles and a hibernacullum, as well as deep and diverse emergence zones. I do oxygenate and I've kept both ponds weedy with a range of different aquatic plants whilst just clearing a small area to help with the filming. I built a mud shelf and have experimented feeding them bloodworm and dafnia in different ways to keep them at the surface for videoing. At the start of september, all the newts have now left the water to hunt and hibernate. The majority of efts have also left, those that don’t leave within the next few weeks will over-winter. Do let me know what you think and which clips you enjoyed? Needless to say please excuse some of the editing/vid quality Im a keen enthusiast rather than a pro but hope it's of interest. I've also uploaded other videos through the summer onto a youtube channel 'urban ponds london' Enjoy.

I could watch newts for hours and not be bored. The experience is sublime.

Have I met you somewhere? Do you tend to leave a lot of comments on dinosaur videos or forums?

I HAVE watched newts for hours. Kept Japanese warty newts, locally caught common newts and re-bellied newts in an aquarium in my youth. Still fun to see the pretty little chaps in local ponds, especially the gorgeous crested little dragon common newt males.

I have never seen so many newts. Seems to be more than one variety and a few toads thrown in for good measure. Well done, nice to see our nature being looked after in this way.

Lovely shots of the efts. The grown newts look like mini-godzillas. :)

Actually the look extremely fish-like. Makes it easy to visualize how it was when those first lobe finned fish started making the necessary developments for land.

Yes I have a few Newts, but your population is amazing! There is so many.

Probably because his feeding supports a far higher population than normal.

How does the pond look so natural? Did you use a liner and could you give some details on the construction or the pond

Loved seeing the frog at 6:30. Was wondering if the tadpoles were frog or newt. Love to see them coexist.

Great job on the pond, those guys are thriving! Do you know what kind of frogs they are too? I dont think they look like Rana Tempora but possibly they are the pool frogs that inhabit parts of England? Either way, what a garden you have, keep up the good work 😉

Definitely not Rana Tempora, it’s a member of the Pilphylax genus of green frogs. Could be pool frogs or edible frogs. Too small to be adult marsh frogs, however they are hard to distinguish from each other

I really enjoyed your video. I have both smooth and palmate newts in my pond but they only seem to be visible at night, when I use a torch around the pond They never seem to come near the surface during the day, in the way that yours do. Are there any tips that you can give? Most books suggest they are shy during the day but yours certainly are not. Amazing.

The pond looks great! We have also just created a wildlife pond and have frogs/newts..we hope it will look as natural as yours as things grow and settle in. Is that bloodworms you have fed to them? If so, do you buy them frozen or live?
@davidstclair3402
@davidstclair3402 5 лет назад
i think it has to be live as they seem to ignore things that don't move

Newts have a very good sense of smell, I sometimes feed mine freeze dried tubifex worms. Frozen bloodworm works but frozen tubifex is ignored!
