A tour of My English Garden Wildlife Pond in April 2020. The newts are mating, the water lilies are sending lily pads to the surface and the pond skaters are racing across the surface looking for prey. We see some underwater footage of the newts and gorgeous views of the evening light on the pond plants.

Paul, you were born for this sharing your knowledge coupled with your talents as a photographer, this video is calming and informative and the bird song is glorious. I suspect even though your garden is English, the master Claude Monet would be inspired to paint and capture its enchantment. 🤗

Looks like you have 3 species of newt in your pond, the palmate newt at 9:37 and the invasive alpine newt at 4:53 aswell as the the smooth newt !
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 года назад
Well, thank you so much for your comment and info. Wow. I was rather confused by the small males that had a bluey tinge and a row of orange/black marks down the ridge of the back. I presume they’re the alpines? I’ve watched over and over the clip at 9:37 where a male appears and wafts a female. I just can’t make out the evidence for a palmate. It’s all very quick and I’m looking for dark black, back feet. I’m also trying to see the tail to see if there’s a filament at the tip. It’s a bit fast but I can’t make it out. Could you tell me what you can see at 9:37? I must say I’m gobsmacked that I may have these other two species. Do they interbreed? Any other info you have would be very welcome. Thank you, Paul
@lucasbrown2134
@lucasbrown2134 4 года назад
Yes 9:37 is almost definitely a male palmate due to the square-ish body and small flat crest rather than the jagged one of the smooth newt males also I can tell by the golden speckling across the tail and and on the face.
@lucasbrown2134
@lucasbrown2134 4 года назад
Not to sure if they would successfully interbreed however I wouldn’t be surprised if you spot a male of one species attempting to court with a female of a different species. Also I’m interested in what part of the uk you are based ? given that there are only a few known populations of the alpine newt here in the uk.

That was a very informative tour of your pond ... your newts look like mini alligators, but much nicer! It's so lovely to see the waterlilies and those beautiful Iris, in fact all your pond plants are thriving.Your underwater footage was a bonus, and the water is so nice and clear. Your whole garden is a credit to you! I was wondering if you cut back the waterlilies at the end of their flowering season. Mine are looking a bit sad now that the cooler weather has arrived. Regards Lyn
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 года назад
Thank you for the lovely comments Lyn. Little alligators - I love that! Yes, once the lily leaves have turned brown I reach down into the water and cut the stems as low as I can. Or if I can’t reach, I scoop the droopy leaves off the stems. It’s good to have some decaying matter on the bottom of the pond but maybe not too much. Some for all the pond life that make it their home, but not too many fallen leaves as that adds nutrients to the water that encourages green algae and probably blanket weed. I use a stick and twist it round to grab the blanket weed. It’s great for the compost heap. Just need to make sure the pond life drops off it back into the water.

Hello - lovely pond.Amazing to have the Great Crested Newts.I don’t have newts in my wildlife pond but have frogs which are now busy producing lots of spawn.Apparently newts eat tadpoles so I presume you don’t get frogs? I have a shallow beach area one side for the frogs to spawn & the birds to drink & bath. I introduced wild sticklebacks last autumn just to add an extra.Thanks.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld Год назад
You are correct, newts and frogs don’t live well together. I get frogs but never frog’s spawn. A shallow beach is perfect - if I had dug this pond I would have made sure it had a beach. Sticklebacks are a great idea - I have thought about it. I don’t have any great crested newts - they’re mostly smooth newts with a few palmate and alpine which have found their way to the garden.

Good morning to you Paul ! It was amazing seeing your pond with all the amazing flowers and those water skaters ( we have some here also in Quebec ) they call them " crève yeux " but it’s a nickname or " des patineurs " and that’s in French. " Patineur " means skater just like in English. Didn’t know about those "Newt " we don’t have those here ...I think??? It was cool to see them underwater . We used to have a small pond ( 40 square feet and 18 inches deep) surrounded with rocks with a small waterfall that was activated by a pool pump , but it was a lot ove work keeping it clean every springtime so I decided to undo it and bury it . Well it was a nice video and well edited Paul , you have a beautiful place . 👍👍👍 Have a nice Sunday H&S 👩‍❤️‍👨🌈

Very good morning to you Hélène & Serge. Interesting you have pond skaters. I believe you have one newt? The red spotted newt. Don’t know how common it is or exactly where it is found. The underwater photography was more difficult than I anticipated. Surface refraction! I’m above the water and pointing the underwater GoPro at where the newts are - but in fact they’re in a slightly difference place. I only realised when they were in the corner of the frame on the computer - so I reshot. Of course I can’t see the back screen of the camera so it’s ‘shooting from the hip’ (as John Wayne would say) I’m really pleased you liked it Serge. 🎥🌻

What a wonderful video Paul. Do you still have the pond as I can’t recall seeing it in your latest videos? We’re just in the process of making one at the allotment which is how I came to find your video. How deep must it be for water lily plants to flower. I’ve taken one from our garden pond which has only ever flowered once but we have a filtration pump in that pond with a small fountain so I’m guessing they won’t flower in moving water as such. Thanks
@paultsworld
@paultsworld Год назад
Glad you enjoyed the pond. Yes, it is still there - going strong. Mine is about 2.5 feet deep. It’s true that water lilies don’t want their leaves under a fountain. If the water Lily doesn’t flower I think it’s a good idea to feed it. There are little slow release capsules you can press into the soil near their roots. It’s actually recommended to do that each year although I never do. Good luck with your new pond - it will establish really quickly and plants grow at a great rate so it will settle down and look good in its first Summer.

Hi Wilky, no, I don't clean it in anyway except take leaves and debris off the surface. It is clear at the moment but will get a little green when the weather warms up and the blanket weed starts. I'll scoop off the blanket weed but it'll stay cloudy for a while then start to clear again.

Lovely Video and a wonderful pond , did you use a pond liner and any filtration ? I ask as I am very keen on making my own wildlife pond so any advice would be greatly appreciated
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 года назад
Hi Kevin, Glad you enjoyed the video. The pond has a butyl liner. These is no filtration - the water should stay clear when there are plenty of oxygenating plants. It's best not to have any fish in a wildlife pond as they eat everything and stir up the water - making it cloudy. Make sure the depth of the pond is enough so that the water never freezes right to bottom - 2 1/2 feet is probably a minimum depth. (depends where you live of course!) When you dig it make sure there is a shallow end where you can have a shelving "beach" and that there is a shallow shelf (perhaps 9 inches deep and 12 inches wide at least half way round for marginal plants. Good luck!

Thanks Paul, great video, I have often watched ponds for the amphibians and never seen the life below the surface.. Could you recommend some (cheap amateur!) gear that would help me record such scenes.. :-)

Thank you Kumar. I can think of a few possibilities: Your smartphone in a waterproof bag - search Amazon for smartphone waterproof cases. I have one for when I'm kayaking and you can operate the phone through the bag. A cheap Gopro in a waterproof housing - also cheap. A GoPro 7 black which is waterproof without a housing. It is more expensive but has so many uses - it's what I used for the underwater footage in this video and I also did a video snorkelling with it plus I used it for the Starling video. I really like this camera for its versatility. Hope that helps. I'll link to my other GoPro videos to give you an idea of what I mean: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QZG-6plM_RY.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jqFqHfRAFTY.html

Paul, first, I appreciate what you've done ! I love your pond ! and I have some questions: 1. how do you clean up the pond and keep the water clean? 2. I don't see any pump or equipment in the pond , I love it ! But do you use any pump or equipment ? if so, where did you hide it ? Thank you !
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 года назад
Hi Byron, I don't have any pump or filtration system. With a wildlife pond - without fish - the pond can balance itself by having plenty of oxygenating plants and weed and also at least 1/3 of the surface shaded. In my case I have 4 water lilies in the pond - they shade the surface nicely. However in the height of the Summer there will be blanket weed (which I remove) and the water isn't so clear. It does clear again though by itself when the temperatures drop a bit. In Spring/early Summer and Autumn it is always very clear.

Hi Carl, well spotted! I hadn’t realised when I shot the video that I had other types of newt. I did think one or two looked ‘strange’ but it didn’t cross my mind other newts had moved in and I’d never seen an alpine newt before as its non-native to Britain. A couple of other experts like yourself have also let me know - so thank you - and thanks for pointing out the exact time they appear in the video.

Thank you. The previous owners dug the pond themselves, I think it was dug over a couple of days and then of course there's putting in the butyl lining. Since then I've changed the aquatic plants adding in native species.

Hi Paul, I have just bought a house which has two old neglected ponds, I plan to make at least one a wildlife one. I love your pond! Any suggestions for “must have” plants - your pond water is so clear too.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 года назад
Hi Caro - how fabulous two ponds! Best if the wildlife one has no fish as they eat almost everything. Are you in the UK? Check out my video on the aquatic plants (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xMfwtOQywZM.html). I'll be doing another video shortly on the pond plants that flower in June. Make sure you get a lot of oxygenating plants as they will help to keep the pond clear - plus some plants that grow out of the water for the wildlife to climb up - check out the video I'm putting up tomorrow on the pond - it's spectacular. So Flowering Rush, Water Plantain, Bog Bean, Water Soldier, march marigold - all these plants are good for the pond - help the wildlife and look pretty as they flower. Hope that helps. Good luck....oh, and a waterlily or two of different colours!

Paul T's World thank you. Thanks very helpful. There will be no fish in ours. Did you use aquatic soil at the bottom? I have read a few conflicting suggestions. 😊
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 4 года назад
@@caroturner4916 No, I didn't put soil in the bottom - I planted everything in baskets that had aquatic soil. It's good to have debris at the bottom - but not too much. Some people advocate putting some straw in so it sinks and becomes debris. If you have soil as a base then the plants will soon fill up every inch of the pond in an uncontrolled manner. At least in baskets they'll be constrained - for a while. Hope that helps. Google 'Chris Baines wildlife pond' and watch some of the interviews with him about his wildlife pond - I have his book. He knows what he's talking about, he had a series on UK TV a long while ago - I learned a lot from him.

There are now about 40 colonies around the UK. The ones in my pond probably arrived from a garden a few doors from me. I only noticed them last year so I think they’re new to my pond.
