Would the float valve fit inside of a piece of 4" PVC pipe? You could drill a hole in an end cap and fit the valve into the cap and cover it with a cross drilled pipe. That would keep the horses from chewing it up. A couple of well placed stainless screws to hold it in place and you are done. You can even set the height buy raising/lowering the pipe. Better yet, you could make it so that the float valve is still contained in the 4" PVC, but pipe it to fit on the OUTSIDE or even behind the fence!! Jesus, my engineering brain is coming back!!!

They make float valves specifically for horse troughs for like $8 that hook directly up to a garden hose but this made for a good video.

I enjoy your channel so please keep doing them. One question, why not just use one of the current items for this purpose? There is a little giant trough-o-matic thing on Amazon for $15, or $20 for the all metal version.

They make quick connects for holes, they have them in the garden sections in home Depot or Lowe's. Or another idea use air hose connects.

Maybe a better design would be a (used) complete toilet flush container, setup as is somewhere inside (but relative near the trough) Just one thicker pipe (maybe 1 1/2 inch pvc) running from the bottom of the flush container to the side of the trough. The idea is that the flush container is filling up and shutting off as designed originally but it's mounted height determines the water level in the trough by way of water level equalization. No horse startling (the flush container is further away), no horse sabotage of Lowes quality moving parts (no delicate parts are in the actual trough) and highly scale-able (simply extend the 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe to the next trough (at the same level obviously)

If a frog were to fall asleep on the float, you could have a flooding issue no?

Also, you should put a cover on the side the horses drink from so they can't nip at the plumbing.

We are doing this too. We have water feeders in each stable, it works really well.

Hey Dan!, is that vodka sweat? I also wanted to suggest putting antifreeze in the water tank so it doesn't freeze up. No ya better not cuz it's probably not good for horses. Seriously, good job.

I leave a piece of wood floating around in all my horse troughs. Saves on picking out dead birds!
