A Sharp Decline: Ghostbusters

In our raunchiest installment to date, we (paranormal) investigate the Ghostbusters franchise through its underwhelming sequel, controversial revival, and flaccid reboot. Though its origins foretold an expansive and selenium-rich lore, its various iterations would barely register on a PKE meter. Failing to evolve and stuck in the repetitious cycle of a skipping record, the franchise is in danger of becoming entombed in its own ghost trap.
Prepare to bust as we follow the rundown and haunted property of Ghostbusters along its climaxes and crevasses.

Honestly I'm amazed neither Real Ghostbusters or Extreme Ghostbusters got much mention in this? Like, they were a MAJOR part of my childhood. I still think that you could add Egon into a sequel by having a CGI Egon Ghost who's styled like a hybrid of Harold Ramis and Animated Egon, and have him voiced by Maurice Lamarche (Egon's VA from the animated shows). That way you get to have Egon present throughout, but also serve as a shoutout to the animated shows.

Extreme ghostbusters, even when I was 10 years old when it was playing on TV before school, it was just okay. I didn't like the grungy Ghostbusters theme sound, and I wasn't a fan of all the ethnic diversity and politically correct ghostbusters. The animation was kind of cool for the time, but overall I much preferred watching the real ghostbusters. I did however like the gadgets and the new trap was pretty cool. And I definitely had a bunch of the toys. But I think at the time I just really liked the Ghostbusters toys for the line, including the ecto-1 which is still to this day the coolest Ghostbusters toy I own. The toy line was excellent. The TV show though, even as a kid wasn't quite my cup of tea. @@randallbesch2424

Same here. I was just a kid granted, but I saw GBII a lot and not GB and thought that the content of GB II is what GB was all about. When I finally did see GB as a kid, I wasn't old enough to get the humor and thought that it seemed bland by comparison, like a prequel. As a kid I was more into the ghosts, special effects and villains. While as an adult I did come to see why the majority of fans feel the way they do, I've never lost that liking for GB II for what it was. Sure, people can dislike GBII all they'd like, but I'd say that I like both movies and will never forget how GBII made me feel as a kid.

The reason the franchise will never be like the first is that simply the first film wasn't marketed as a family film. It was an adult film with swearing, smoking, and sexual innuendo. But kids went to see it anyway. A few years later came The REAL Ghostbusters animated series. And the kids who were too young for the film were introduced to The Busters this way. By the time the next movie was made the adult humor was toned WAY down and gone were the smoking and salty language. Columbia desperately wanted the child audience along with their parents. And this is why the franchise is currently about kids. They want some of that MCU style money.

Actually though I see your point as I grew up with the first two installments plus the animated series, the second film contains smoking. Ray Stanz visibly smokes cigars (like I smoke) in two scenes: The late night meeting with the Mayor of New York plus when they're using the Slim Blowers to load up the mid region of the Stature Of Liberty with positively-charged slime.🚬

Very much agreed, I still don't understand why people didn't embrace it back then. I mean obviously there are going to be some similarities in the formula, but doesn't every James Bond movie do the same freaking thing it was just different enough and it had for me, much more intimidating and scary villain then the first one. In some ways it was scarier and actually funnier than the first one. And for me at least, I like the fact that it didn't have all the dirty humor that the first one had. It was more the kind of movie that both kids and adults could enjoy. And I like that it had a more positive storyline that was more hopeful and I liked the idea of fighting evil slime with more positive slime that worked whenever there were positive emotions and feelings. I don't know, it had more of a warm and fuzzy feel about it and I like that. I liked the message. Fast forward 25 years and I feel that it's definitely more appreciated now and is considered a classic right up there with the first one buy many fans. However everything that came after 2016 has absolutely failed and it's sad to see. They should have just kept it with the first two movies, and that awesome video game from 2009.

I never understood it either. I mean if someone says the first movie was great but they don’t like the second movie if anything the one complete I can understand is that it is kind of the same movie again. Not the exact same, but it follows the same path. I’ve even watched RU-vid channels that complain that it’s pretty much just doing the same thing the first one did but if the first ones great and the second one is just doing the same stuff over again that can’t mean it’s terrible. Is it as good as the first one? No I don’t think so but that doesn’t mean it’s bad either. And honestly back then I don’t remember a lot of people complaining about it being terrible, it didn’t have a big box office like the first one, but it was also going up against the first Michael Keaton, Batman movie, and for people that we weren’t around back then you have to understand that that Batman movie completely changed how people viewed comic book movies, how movies studios, viewed comic book movies and really how America looked at Batman. Like before that, it was only the Adam West version of Batman that people that didn’t read the comics new, this was the movie that showed everyone who Batman was in the movie was a juggernaut. There was no way a Ghostbusters sequel was going to be able to compete with that. I think if the movie would’ve come out in 1986 I think it would’ve done a lot better I do think maybe they waited just a couple years too long. But yeah, people completely blow it out of proportion it’s not a bad movie at all.

Traditionally at least back then, sequels made less than the first film on average. It feels like one of those things where in pop culture it has become mainstream so most people now believe it. Most people will tell you that empire strikes back is the best star wars film but they dont realize that is because they have just been programmed to believe that and havent really made that decision for themselves. The best example is the narration voiceover in blade runner. Most people will tell you the better version doesnt have it. But I will bet 98% of them have never actually watched the entire film with it.

I fail to see much of a difference between the first movie and the second movie. They both were definitely funny but in different ways, the first movie was probably a little more adult-oriented and the second one was definitely good for both families and adults. In some ways I definitely prefer the second one. Janusz is hilarious, my whole family loved that guy and still does with the accent. What can I say, tomatoes tomtoes. Some people like the first ones humor better, some people like the second ones. But I can't even picture one movie without the other. I just find it strange that literally all the things that this video claims were unfunny in the sequel, I found to absolutely hilarious. And most of my family, we all love the second one. In some ways more so. So what can I say, everyone has different versions of what they find funny I guess! How can you not mention the world of the psychic part? That's absolutely one of the most memorable and funny moments of the entire movie. And blaming it for being convoluted, have you even seen the new one? That movie is so cram packed with so many damn things going on and too many characters, makes Ghostbusters 2 look like a very linear simple story by comparison. Both movies are excellent and a ton of fun!

Sadly Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire just continues with the "awfully average script with lots and lots of vapid fanservice and callbacks to the original movie even when it makes no sense" direction. The story also kinda felt like one of the less good episodes of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon. I don't want to "take away the joy" out of the people who are perfectly happy with this, but I can't say I'm happy that this is the state of the series. By this point I'll just stick to the first movie being just a classic '80s film that never really needed to be a franchise.

Back in the early 2000s, I came up with a basic pitch for a new Ghostbusters sequel/reboot. It would've starred Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Jack Black, and Chris Tucker as the new gang, as well as the rest of the old gang. Will Ferrell = Egon-type, Vince Vaughn = Venkman-type, Jack Black = Ray-type, Chris Tucker = Winston-type. The beginning of the movie would start with the old team trying to bust a ghost(s). They succeed, but just barely. They realize they're getting too old to keep up, so they go through a hiring process and end up with the above mentioned trainees. The new team gets a new car, new Proton Packs, new uniforms, equipment, etc. They encounter the Main Bad Ghost Villain and the movie unfolds. Ghost busting montage. By the end, the new team is having their climactic showdown with the new Ghost Villain, and they get their butts handed to them. It seems like all is lost. Suddenly, the old team shows back up in the old car, with their old suits and equipment, and they join forces with the new team. With their combined efforts, they manage to defeat the Ghost Villain. The end.

Trying to play off the all female reboot as "anti-woke hysteria" and that "it was destined to fail because it had so much to live up to" and pretend it is good is a bit of a stretch. If that was true than afterlife would have failed as well or the game but they didnt. That films political focus not only cost sony hundreds of millions, but it cost them hundreds of millions more in lost sequels, toys, spinoffs etc. The filmmakers immediately called everyone that didnt like it racists and sexist only making things worse. Its just not a good film, the opening titles show that so clearly. A college student film class level editing with no logo, text isnt even centered. The incredibly iconic score cut short. Even if the movie was good the fact it is still so hated makes it worse if anything. If a restaurant has good food but everyone hates it and the owner, than that owner failed somewhere down the line. Afterlife looks just as woke and bad but due to nostalgia people gave it a pass.

The real problem with GB2016 is the reaction from the cast and crew to the reaction to the trailer. I don’t get the hate for Ghostbusters II it appears it’s just become fashionable to hate on GBII sure it’s hard for any sequel to surpass any original but number two was still a good Ghostbusters film. It appears haters try really hard to hate GBII. At least GBII is infinitely better than that 2016 abomination

There hasn't been one Ghostbusters movie of recent years that has unseated the video game as the true and worthy sequel. Neither has there been anything that disqualifies 1972's "The Asphyx" as an unofficial but very connected Ghostbusters prequel.

The reboot didn’t work because it was a goofy comedy all the way to its core. It’s funny, but it doesn’t feel like a Ghostbusters movie. Part of what’s great about the original is that it has real creepy horror elements. The ghosts are scary. The reboot has none of that.

The 2016 remake did the opposite of what it should have done, it proved the women cannot bust as good as the guys and that just letting improv run your film is an AWFUL form of filmmaking. The sheer amount of pointless and unfunny dancing and improv jokes made a big budget movie feel like sitting through and amateur hour improv set with the least funny comedians you have ever seen with guest appearances by people you used to love giving no fucks. It missed the entire point of the original film, ignored every hope of a new film about new ghostbusters in what should have now been a worldwide business where they could cameo as the CEOs, and replaced it with an almost remake with too many memberberries for a far far far superior film and little to no laughs even going for the lowest common denominator toilet humor. The best you can say about 2016 GB is that Hemsworth really goes balls to the wall on being the DUMBEST person to ever live in it and he still isnt funny, but by god did he make a fool of himself.
@bZman

You can tell how unenthused Feig was by his over extravagant suits the whole time and casual not giving a fuck as well. The actresses were not at fault, just that turd of a director who gave no fucks and was more focused on looking good every day than making a good film.

In 1984 something special happened. The right people came together at the right time and made a movie that became an unexpected hit. It was a perfect self-contained story as most films were allowed to be in those days. The enormous success of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon series in 1986 took Ghostbusters from a single hit live action movie to a powerhouse brand with huge merchandise potential. This second wave of was a blessing and a curse. It is what made Akroyd and Ramis forgo their no sequel standard and green light the film that became Ghostbusters 2. As I said before, something special happened in 1984. Indeed, the same people came together in 1988 however, it was a forced union. The film they made this time was not the result of an organic process. It was a cash grab that did nearly everything the same hoping lightening would strike twice. Ghostbusters was never meant to be a bloated film franchise. Forcing it to be for the sake of milking the brand for money is the reason every subsequent installment has failed. The magic that happened in 1984 is never going to happen again.

Dude, you are way off in your ultra light criticism of Ghostbusters 2016. That film was patient zero for actors and studios attacking the fans, when they simply voiced any criticisms of films. That film bombed, and rightly so. It was poorly written, acted, and directed. It was a shit film that failed on every level and Paul Feig's career is pretty much done.

I will say it was stupid to try to continue Ghostbusters by disrespecting the franchise which is the full intent of the director to just deliberately make a garbage film to the point he actually falsely accused fans of Ghostbusters of sexism Even though the movie was sexist by nature I don't see how fans of Ghostbusters were the ones being sexist it doesn't help that uneducated morons like Donald Trump felt like he had any right to talk about the reboot And you know Ghostbusters fans have been falsely associated with Donald Trump during the election even though the two problems with 2016 Ghostbusters is that they were knowingly and deliberately making a bad movie dare I say worse Ghostbusters 2 cuz at least Ghostbusters 2 was actually entertaining I was supposed to believe that liking the originals somehow made me a sexist bigot This is the same bulshit that Disney pulled with Star Wars And the second thing that worked against the movie was the expectation of a true Ghostbusters 3 Ghostbusters fans rightfully upset that we weren't going to get a true follow-up Ghostbusters 2016 only did one thing right and that's having a poster of John and yoko's happy Xmas War is Over message in the film but it doesn't save the movie from being a racist and sexist film

The trouble is that, essentially, everything that isn't the first movie is pretty non essential. The cartoon feels like probably the only relevant follow up, and that's mainly because it realised the idea that most of the movies only hint around the edges of: the day to day life of a Ghostbuster, going out on jobs catching ghosts. I can't help wonder if a televised revival is what the franchise needs to be relevant. All these movies just seem pointless.

Hahaha I really love the analogies... To be honest, the best thing i put my hands and eyes on (besides the first movie) is the game, its clever, its funny, has nostalgia moments and pretty new good moments. The problem of the movie that the game doesn't have its the time to know more and more about this guys. In the movies, has the necessity of action, of thrills, jumpscares and so on. The game presents you with a lot of small jobs, day by day. It shows the reality of this workers, the exploration, the investigation, the knowledge, the capability of recognize the entities, the places they go, the ghosts they trap, even the hardware they cook and assemble in a hurry to enhance their job. The game never loses the time for jokes, the time for action, the time for dialogue and explanation... Every character has its moments, and its a long game too, and i don't get tired of playing. Because even if you fight an interdimensional boss, you gotta to bust some ordinary ghost tomorrow... And i think this is the charm this series lost. Its not about the world, its about this guys doing their job... The movie sequels never had time to the viewer see the universe where this guys lives, its a pit...

I really dislike how everyone discredits those who didn't like that 2016 flick. Look, women are fine, but those women were unfunny, and that movie was unfunny. That's it. It felt very Sony movie, and these days that's a damning indictment. All you can see is a cash grab. I don't even see a movie.

None of these greedy executives UNDERSTAND Ghostbusters. It's not about Proton Packs, or Slimer, or the Ecto-1, or Gozer - those are just the skin. Ghostbusters was about the chemistry between the leads, the comedy, and the soul. You could make a Ghostbusters film where the leads try to catch ghosts with fishing nets and harpoons, as long of the chemistry and comedy is there.

Frozen Empire was decent. Definitely doesnt deserve the flack it got. The nods to the OG Ghostbusters movies was very appreciated. I dont know why Paul Rudd was made out to be a dork in this one. Bill Murray was classic. It was good. I'd still say this movie is the fourth best ghostbusters...Th only thing that bugged me was.... spoiler...The lion. GB2 was a bad movie. The 2016 movie was a mistake. The new movies are fine, basically they're using the franchise to tell new stories. They're family friendly and much better than Disney's Haunted House. There's a place for them and I would expect one more as a legacy movie. It will never stand up to the original Ghostbusters but that cast was incredible at that time. Sadly Harold died and Rick doesn't act anymore.

But I find these videos funny when they explain the movies like everybody hasn't seen it before.

The reason there always has to be the OG Ghostbusters in the sequels is because Ivan Reitman tried to make a Ghostbusters-type movie(Evolution), and it didn't make enough money. Studios are too scared to invest a suitable budget without the safety net of the Ghostbusters IP/original actors.
