This month's stash busting was, well.... Let's just say it didn't go to plan. I'm still learning a lot from this process and I'm definitely doing a lot of growing as a knitter and as a person. Unfortunately my WIPS are not growing. BUT, I did have a lot of fun 😄

I love the sentiment, and I initially thought it wouldn't take that long, but now I'm remembering I think Claude said she has ~300 daisies left to make, which would mean taking nearly a whole year, especially when U add on some time for crocheting the daisies together and attaching the cuffs and yoke. So maybe more like 10 daisies a day😂 . . . Is that enough for a flower crown? A flower crown a day keeps the hayfever around . . .

A grand idea! Then, knowing how many daisies might be needed for a particular portion of the sweater, i.e. sleeve, can be crocheted eggs enough daisies are made for said sleeve. Then all you have are seams to finish. There is no hurry. So, it takes a year to complete 😮 Not the end of the world!!! 💚💚💚

The way I look at stash busting for non-scrappy projects is... If you have a bottle of squash, you can't drink it neat. You have to buy water or lemonade or something to dilute it... But eventually you finish the squash! So if you buy yarn for projects you are genuinely excited about and find ways to use bits of your stash as you go (contrasting colours or crocheted appliqués etc) you're still stash busting! You're amazing and should try to be kinder to yourself

I just mentioned to my therapist last week that I've noticed how when I have an epiphany, it seems I find people coming to the same conclusions everywhere, kind of when you learn a new word... My hobbie of choice is writing, and just last week I decided I'm no longer gonna be so hard on myself or feel bound to complete projects that I started or had the idea for years ago, just because I was passionate about it once upon a time -- and here you are, having a very similar moment with your knitting. it's weird how we start playing these games with ourselves. For me, I think it's a mix of perfectionism and sunken cost fallacy, and it takes me a long time to even notice I'm doing it and why it's suddenly become so hard to do something I used to love. Great video, thank you for sharing! May we be free from our own hangups going forward!

The story about the patchwork lady really hit home for me. I'm autistic and I can have super intense interests or hobbies for years at a time, want to do them all the time, learn everything about them, and then all of a sudden I just don't care anymore and it's something else now. Imagine that when you're a teenager trying to pick a career - whatever had my interest at the time didn't do it for me anymore a few years down the road. For a while I didn't allow myself to invest in any hobbies because I didn't know how long they were going to last, and as a result I denied myself the indescribable enjoyment of losing myself in my favourite activity. I'm finally learning to roll with it - both the intense fixation and the lack thereof. In the end it's very simple when it comes to hobbies: you're supposed to enjoy them, and that's it!

The ‘THOUGHTS’ segment really resonated with me - I can get stuck in thinking of myself as “the kind of person who ___” and then be really hard on myself when that becomes less true, even if it’s for very good reasons Also, the clip of you tapping your beret with the spoon charmed the heck out of me ☺️

Yeah, I've been dealing with this a lot recently after finally getting on medication that is cutting the worst of my mental health issues and I'm kind of having to figure out who I am now that I am capable of experiencing emotional range. Weird problem to have 😂

Your stashbusting, over the last year, finally convinced me to bust my own stash. In October, I finished two WIP, started/completed one, will complete another by next week, and will be ready to get back to the huge project I only work on in cooler weather. Haven't needed to buy any new yarn. Yet. Meanwhile, I worked my way back through the piles of yarn and fabric to find my sewing machine, so will be busting the fabric stash, too. And it's all because you've challenged me to do a little bit each day. Thank you for that.

I'm not here for strict stashbusting videos, I'm here to watch whatever new creations you've gotten up to, so I look forward to seeing what the next few months bring regardless of if it's "according to plan" or not! It's so easy to get down in the weeds and stressed when you're a creative, so I am happy you're beginning to go easy on yourself. Definitely a good reminder to those of us in the same boat. I did see one knit youtuber who did the whole how much in 24hrs but the 24 hours was split up into 2-4 hr chunks each day. That seemed reasonable to me. We do not need out fellow knitters hurting themselves over clicks. Love the purple beret!

PS I made a baby blanket to welcome the 6th grand child for a good friend. The Baby's siblings are now demanding ( asking firmly...their manners are better than that) blankets of their own, but sized for their favorite doll. I'm having great fun working with each child for color and design , and then making in miniature . These are such fast makes too, so very satisfying. I did offer the kids full size blankets, but they said no. Surprises abound!

It is wonderful to see that spark of enthusiasm that lights you up when you talk about the berets (which are gorgeous!). Blocking it over a plate is very clever. I was intrigued by the use of a wooden spoon to tap everything into place.

as a fellow disabled fiber artist, i know it’s so hard not to beat ourselves up for how much we can get done… that being said, it’s okay! its okay to not work on something because you’re not feeling good, and it’s also okay to not work on something because it’s not feeling good to you right now! i know it’s easier said than done, but i wanted to say that. also, i think it’s totally okay to buy more yarn to finish a project, and makes the project more unique and loved. i really love your work and you’re so inspiring to me, Claude. thank you for these videos ❤

TBH I really love these long projects because they are more realistic to me also there's been a discourse about knitting and crochet becoming less about slow fashion and more about how much you can knock out quickly. Seeing long term projects is more inspiring for me because I often lack patience and even if someone puts it aside for a while it feels like I've been given permission to do the same and give myself a damn break (my rsi thanks you). The Beret is stunning btw ❤️👏🏾

I'm really enjoying this destashing series. If feels a lot more mindful about how you craft and has a great insight into your thought process for you projects. I always have a lot to think about after watching your videos. I'm currently knitting a jumper and cardigan from deadstock yarn. I get a real kick out of hunting through ebay for just the right yarn for the pattern I want to knit.

I felt your discussion of putting pressure on yourself in my soul.... My psychologist is always telling me to be kinder to myself and that's become my mantra. She introduced me to the concept of positive nihilism - "nothing matters so just have fun!" essentially. That's my other mantra. Watching you on this journey has been really helpful in my own using what I own and working down my WIPs. I look forward to however you choose to take this type of video 😊❤️

I know you may feel “less productive” with only finishing one object but it is so refreshing to see someone not finish 10+ pieces in a month. I think we have a skewed idea of the speed we should be making things which makes no sense bc handmade shouldn’t be as fast as machine made or fast fashion. Your beret is gorgeous and really inspiring me to try some colorwork! I may have found you bc of your stash busting content but LOVE your vintage knits and sewing videos. If stash busting ever becomes unenjoyable, pls do not feel pressured to continue doing it. ❤

I've always been quite jealous of people for whom bobby pins work. The little buggers just work themselves out of my hair no matter what I try. (I've the same problem with hair clips, elastics, etc. unless I do some sort of 80s back-combing first -- and even that falls out unless I use an entire can of hairspray or something on it. At which point I can get a Whole. FIVE. Hours! Argh.) And, yes Claude, even though my head is relatively small, that still means I can't wear berets the historical way. They just slide off my hair. /sigh / That's ok; beret-shaped beanies are just as nice, right?

I wanted to film knitting videos too but I’d get mad at myself for not working on the project I’d want to film and then just get a case of the fuck its. I’m much happier grabbing whatever project floats my boat in the moment. It gets finished when it gets finished. Accepting the type of knitter you are is really important - and accepting that that will change over time. I'm so glad you have found some overlap between rav favourites and yarn in your stash. I knit the opposite way round. Yarn first and then find the perfect pattern, but gosh it's satisfying when the perfect pattern is the already in my favourites! If you fancy a high speed project that really busts stash I had a huge amount of fun with a blanket pattern called "The big marl" and about a decades worth of saved ends (2.5kg, almost all partial balls). You hold multiple strands together so it eats yarn like anything, and it's great knitting for bad brain days because it is just garter stitch with an icord edge. It only took me a month to knit too, but it was a month where I was almost entirely bedbound and too sick to do anything more interesting... It's also a very satisfying blanket to sit under, because of the stretch in the garter stitch, so I was pretty pleased with the finished results too.

I hear you on the outdated image of The Kind Of Person I Am, and outdated standards, that live in my head. We evolve slowly, and it takes time for me to realise that my reality no longer matches my personal expectations. Like you, there have been a lot of changes and challenges in my life since early 2020 and I'm just not the same person anymore. Be kind to yourself as you recover from a difficult time 💜 Also, that beret is just darling! I love the purple and green, and it's very you!

You can only do what can be done with what you’ve got. What you’ve got (or not got!) includes health (physical, emotional and mental), time, energy and motivation. Choose which stashbusting projects you would really enjoy (not just put up with!), do those as and when you can, and take all your remaining yarn to the charity shop. Someone will love it. By the way, I love the soft colours of the second beret!

I am so happy to see a new video! And keep it realistic, because you might be a YTer, but I personally follow you not just for the knitting, but also for real life in connection to the knitting. Makes me feel the fact that I have frogged the cardigan pockets of my child for a fourth time much less hard and less frustrating (no, still frustrating, but a shared frustration is less weighty (?)). And remember, a daisy a day keeps the blouse in progress! ;)

Never beat yourself up about things - if you force yourself to try and complete things, you’ll end up hating the project. I have been trying to use up all my sock yarn and I keep buying more. I’ve almost completed my second pair of socks and as soon as I do, I’ll be on to the next. I’ve got a lot left of the yarn I got for the new ones, but I’ll definitely knit some more socks for other people I think or even myself lol. It’s tough, as well, living with conditions like we are so never stress! Also, I wonder about the scope for matching or similar colour way accessories with more of the leftover yarn like gloves, mittens or socks lol

Lovely berets! One of the many things I am also struggling with is learning to be less hard on myself. I keep coming back to this: "What would a caring friend say about this?" They would almost always tell me to stop being so rough on myself. If a friend would say that, why can't I say it to myself? So - I am adding my voice to the many - Stop being so hard on yourself!

That beret is gorgeous! Love the purple colourway. So cozy and beautiful. I would never have thought of using a plate for blocking, such a good idea. Just found your channel can't wait to see what you get up to. June bugging projects is the way I get through a whole bunch of WIPs, stops me getting too bored or stressed. Don't be too hard on yourself about buying the odd ball or two, like you say the mend and make do ethos was mixing the old and new to create something wonderful.

I really enjoy your ongoing stash busting updates but don't let that get in the way of you enjoying your craft. If we were machines, sure, we'd just make endless blankets or whatever to use it all up. But I wouldn't enjoy doing that, and I don't want to take away any of the pleasure I get from knitting. Even when I spend my time procrast-a-knitting swatches, I still enjoy it. Stick to what you actually like doing and you'll be productive. You made that beautiful beret so quickly and it's just lovely on you. I see many Beret Christmas gifts, and some adorable baby knits, in your future. Have a yarny day 🧶🧶🧶

I love your beret! It turned out beautiful. I love what you said about not being to hard on yourself and telling the story of the lady you stayed with. I also have been really down on myself because some of the sewing that I used to love hasn't been interesting me lately. I believe I am headed in a new direction with my sewing now and need to be kind and allow myself to let go of the past sewing and focus on what I find interesting now.

Hi Claude, I've had Fibromyalgia for over 30 years. I was a Type A personality, over-achieving on everything, before I was laid low with Glandular Fever, and FMS started. I spent 10 years bashing myself up for being a "failure", not working enough, not completing projects, not "thriving". In the end, the only person I hurt was me and the only person who expected so much of me, was ME. I also developed ADHD, or the same symptoms. I think I was always a high achieving ADHDer but the illness really did a number on my brain. I flit from thing to thing. I get bored more easily, and now I do things that I WANT to do. I also think that our illness limits us so much, but we still want to experience everything we can, so we start lots of things to get that joy and boost of endorphins and energy that comes with starting a new project. The boost is addictive when you have little energy. When we get to the part that is more of a grind, we get tired easily, so we start another project to get more energy. So I think it's probably better to do smaller projects while you are having a bad time. Just my thoughts on the matter. PS I LOVE those berets. You could EASILY sell those berets for a good price. Start a Etsy shop or something like that. Just stunning. Love from Australia. ♥

Those berets are lovely, especially the purple one, and Tasha Moss has some great patterns, so thank you for bringing her to my attention. I also think it's fine to buy additional yarn to use up stash, especially if it means you actually use it up and get something you like and will use at the end

You are so insightful about the role knitting plays in your life over time. I'm in a similar situation right now where I have these self-imposed standards, I'm upset that things are taking so long or that a certain project isn't perfect or bringing me joy. You are putting it so eloquently in a way that really hits home for me. Thank you for prompting me to step back and analyze my relationship with my knitting and remind me that the relationship is dynamic and that I AM allowed to put knitting in a different place in my head, heart, and life. life is too short. do what you love! Having goals is great. Using up your stash is great. But if you need to supplement it to make it more enjoyable, do what it takes to use it up. Can't wait to see your completed Daisy top... but do it at your own pace.

I love the stashbusting videos. First because we get a video once a month consistently ( or as consistent as you can) and second because I like seeing your thoughts progress. The progress videos are great, but only having to take a shorter amount of time to talk to the camera might be helpful too. Even if stashbusting means supplemental yarn to actually finish the products, it's still helpful to see.

Instead of ‘how many daisies can I make in a day??’ the video could be ‘how many days can I take to make 60 daisies??’, and then it’s almost as if the goal has become ‘as many days as possible’ rather than a high number of daisies in an unrealistic time frame. It’s more achievable, yes, but it also feels like a fun disability spin on these types of videos, and that’s kind of refreshing. On an entirely different note, I had absolutely no idea that using a plate and tapping it with a wooden spoon is a way to block berets and somehow I feel like my life has become greatly enriched with this knowledge. What a bizarre process to watch without prior knowledge, and honestly, how delightful. Something about it just really made me smile. I love both of the finished berets and the colour combinations, and I also love how happy you seem to be with both the berets themselves and the process of making them. People being interested in a thing is the best way to make the thing interesting, in my opinion, and I feel that way about the stashbusting videos too. They’re interesting in general, but I think they’re even more interesting when you’re also interested in making them. So, as always, do with your stash and your knitting whatever it is that makes you happiest.

I'm very much a project first, yarn second person, as well. I've admired your ability to come up with ways of using stash, because it isn't a talent I have. Definitely find something else to do with that yarn, though, if you don't enjoy that process! (I donate full skeins to our local knitters guild, and donate partial balls that I don't think I can use to the weavers guild.) I believe Ko-fi has two different ways to allow for monthly subscriptions. The first way used to be the only way, which was to have a Gold membership (costs $60 annually). I didn't realize they had added a second way, which was to take 5%, if you don't have the Gold membership. If you're getting more than $100/month, it's well worth the Gold membership.

The berets are lovely! I especially love the colour choices for the first one. I've only ever done one colourwork project, so one of these seems rather daunting. Still, it is lovely, so I'll have to work my way up to it at some point! Also, good on you for deciding to not beat yourself up as much over how you work now and what you can and want to do. Habits, abilities, and tastes will always change throughout one's lifetime, and going with that natural flow makes life so much easier than when we struggle against it (I say as someone who often needs that reminder....). This whole stashbusting endeavour has been very inspiring to me and has encouraged me to do more with what I have, too. I think it's great that it has and can evolve to suit your needs as they stand now and in the future. I hope your October is going well so far and that you're finding joy in whatever creative pursuits you have at the moment.

I enjoyed watching the video. This is great to watch since I’m sick. This may sound funny, but watching this is motivating me to stashbust my 20 plus containers of yarn. Right now I’m making a multi color shawl and a throw blanket and I don’t know what else I’m making I can’t keep track😂 you would think that the fact I’m making a a shawl and throw blanket should help me declutter. but it doesn’t help I keep buying yarn 😂.

I'm alwayys so happy when new stashbusting video comes up! It's great you keep on going with this and I really like the idea of buying a ball of yarn here and there to help with the stashbusting. It might be good to keep the numbers separate though, so that you can still see how much of the original stash you used. Thanks for the thoughts about changing situation and changing hobbies, that felt very much spot on. I am multicraftual, so I was used to the waves in which each hobby comes and go. For the last few years I got very invested in babywearing tho, which is a set of hobbies in itself and it got very important for me... and now, due to the weight of my kiddos and my health, it is probably at an end and I struggle with this phase of my life being almost over. But we're always evolving, levelling up, right? So I hope new stuff is on the horizon.
