A new decade for me and my first ever 1960s project! This was part of a collaboration hosted by ‪@AnnabelleAndBensAntics‬ and it was so much fun to make my own version of this travelling vintage sewing pattern.
My vintage winter wardrobe is severally lacking and so this woolly dress should keep me warm and stylish all winter.
But with no toile and a whirlwind selection of different seam allowances, will the finished dress actually fit me?

I love the dress 😍 the fabric, sleeve length, bodice shape and the gathering at the waist 🥰 Yes definitely needs the lining 😉 I'm going to see what pattern I have that I can make into a winter dress 😘 Excellent sewing and it looks gorgeous on you with your shoes and stockings 🥰

Ooh, what a treat! A gentle English voice with no loud shouty stuff and no loud pumped up dance music! Just subscribed because it’s comfortable to watch. I absolutely love that fabric - it’s perfect, the bust darts are really unusual and that style suits you well. I love watching sewing videos, now I’m getting too old to sew much myself - and I remember that style of dress. Suitable wear for a secretary in the sixties 😅 I wondered if you could have used some bias binding sewn onto the hem of the sleeves and the skirt bottom, then hand stitched. It makes a more subtle hem transition. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful video and I look forward to more. ❤

I love it and it looks so nice and warm. Cloths were made so much better back then as they had to last. No throwing them away at the end of the season. Thank you for sharing again. The best to you.

Nice result! I think the bodice zipper is to accommodate the larger, 'set once a week at the salon' hairdos of the late 50s- early 60s. Many of my mother's friends did their hair this way and probably found the larger neck convenient. I have a vintage cashmere pullover with a crew neck and a fine back zipper, added for the same reason I believe.

If I might say, not only are you a person with an excellent personal collection of lovely knitwear, as well as a skilled hand with a needle and thread, but your modelling of the finished article is certainly one of your most noticeable additional skills. Clothing creators on you tube are not often the best people to show off their garment, but you have it off to a Tee! Please keep the projects coming, we love them!

I love this idea. Kudos to Annabelle. Another reason I love vintage sewers is that you get to see a range of body shapes and how patterns will work on a variety of body types and sizes. I love your result.

I somehow didn't have the time/spoons for watching the whole video when it was new, but now that I've come back to it: that's a perfect winter dress and now I want one like it! Which is a weird desire to discover when it's 30+ Celsius outside. :D That skirt silhouette with the side gathers is _so_ early 1960s, I love it.

Lovely dress, and because of its classic lines, not out of date. I can imagine Jackie Kennedy in a dress cut that way. There are at least two available solutions for the short waist. One would be a hard self-belt, if you had the fabric, about an inch in width with a self-covered square or rectangle buckle. If not, a second choice would be a black soft wide belt, leather or faux leather, with a large circle buckle and scarf flare out of the buckle on the side. Either way, dress is very nice. We wore exactly those styles in the early '60's. To dress up, we added just a little modest pearl jewelry and shawl, scarf, or short black jacket on top, with medium black heels completing the look. Extra fancy, we added a hat and gloves, in black or a contrasting solid. And, yes, a lot of times, we suffered from scratchy fabrics, mostly wool.

Cool idea to have a pattern chain letter! You chose a great version of the pattern for your body. How strange to have two zippers on a dress. You did a great job with it. I hope it does the job of keeping you warm.

A lovely winter dress to add to your wardrobe! Having been born in the fifties, raised in the sixties and seventies I’d say you picked the perfect fabric (and fibre) for your version of the dress! Beautifully executed!

Wore dresses just like this but with a pencil skirt and more fitted top as shown on the pattern cover. Late 50s, early 60s are my favorite fashion silhouette. Very sophisticated.

I learnt to sew in the 60s. With sleeves I learnt to sew them in on the widest stitch. Easy to take out to fix. Then, when perfect sew in with a normal stitch. I remember doing all the darts. 😃

We wore dresses with that silhouette in the early sixties. It was always acceptably professional-looking yet comfy! You took me back to those years. It was great, and I must say, a classic never ages!

My grandmother had some of these patterns with funny Seam allowances. She said the allowances were different because you could alter the garment in specific places more than others.

That makes sense! Especially when you think of the volume at the sleeve head and the extra seam allowance there. It would be relatively simple to raise the shoulder and you wouldn't have to cut a new sleeve, most likely, if it was a small enough difference

Yeah. Large seam allowances at the side for ease of adjustment. I've seen that in old sewing books, and in action. I have a dress from I believe 1970 (still pretty much later 1960s in style), made by a professional seamstress, that I got years ago from a family friend whose it used to be when she was a teenager - it has the same wide seam allowances at the sides. Also, I've noticed that Bilikis Signatures here on RU-vid (a seamstress from Nigeria who does drafting and sewing tutorials) still cuts her side seam allowances that wide. It really is a practical solution, allowing you to potentially alter the dress quite easily if you gain some weight, and prolong its life!

That looks really nice on you. Put on a nice belt and pumps and add a little clutch handbag and it would look downright elegant. I like dresses, that can be worn both casual and fancy, personally, so this really appeals to me. Well, maybe 'fancy' isn't quite the right word... it's not a cocktail dress...but something I would feel 'well dressed' in under most circumstances.

The extreme close up of your fingers easing the sleeves in was very interesting. I am self-taught and have never been able to figure out what I am supposed to be doing when I am manipulating ease through the machine.

Yes easing is one of those things where it's like huh? Do I really just smush it about a bit with my fingers until it fits? Difficult to describe and difficult to demonstrate you just have to feel it which is not useful advice when you're not sure what you're doing!

Your dress turned out so very very lovely. You make me want to sew with wool. Wool always makes me nervous because I can't stand wearing it if it is even the least bit itchy! Thank you for sharing your problem solving process and for always reminding me there are things I can do as a disabled sewist to conserve spoons! Lovely job, try using a strip of stretchy thin fabric sewn within the seam allowance around the sleeve head. It gently moulds the sleeve head into shape before inserting
