A short introduction to Nunomo's QUN MK2 groovebox (tutorial)

Saying that the #Nunomo #QUN MK2 mini #groovebox ( shop.nunomo.net/ ) can do a number of things is quite the understatement, so in order to make a video that's not hours long, here's an introduction to the basic workflow.

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)

I’ve owned a Qun mk2 for a little over a year… it’s a deep little machine. Not for the faint of heart. Learning curve is 9000

This paired with a DirtyWave M8, or Yamaha SeqTrak and iPad is more than enough to make high quality , marketable music or just play around /sketch out quick ideas within a mobile setup before going into a full production studio.

Love the sound out of this device the dev is constantly updating the device. Learning curve is steep but rewarding love the artist faceplate they have on the website for the top plate feel like I will never outgrow this device in a good way

@@mr_floydst Yeah, it’s a bit fiddly and quirky so it took some patience to learn the interface and get used to the key combos, but I enjoy that sort of thing.

I absolutely love my qun mk2. Ive had it for long enough to be able to do what i want quickly. I programmed my most used midi ccs to a beatstep and it works a treat. So many features packed into a tiny device (even has a scratch/turntable feature). Firmware updates every few days. A "10 out of 10" device.👍

I have one of these. It's very compact and unique. It takes a while to wrap your head around but it has a unique set of capabilities I haven't seen combined into one device before. The sequencer is very cool as it has polymetric, probability and randomization possibilities. The FM/VA hybrid synth has a Casio CZ-101 kinda feel that goes into pretty gnarly and weird noises rather quickly. There is so much potential in it, but I have too much gear so I haven't hooked it up in a while. I actually have it for sale, but I won't mind much if I have to keep it... It is very cool even if some of it's most unique features don't gel perfectly with my workflow. It's actually the first new piece of hardware I bought in years before more immediate knob per function boxes took its place

This is one of the boxes that most likely started with a clear and simple idea, and then years went by and features were added. There are some menu options here that are beyond the 8-button concept, so you can only reach them with the knob. Perhaps it's time for a UI revision ;-) That being said, the depth of this groovebox is seemingly endless and very impressive.

@@mr_floydst I plead guilty to some of those features. When I first got it, I spent a lot of time on the discord server requesting additions that, when they made sense, were tacked on during the next firmware revision. He is very committed to being responsive to community requests. I can't imagine he's making a fortune off these so it must be a real labour of love

Thank you for putting this out there; I'd seen it some time ago but it had fallen off my radar. It's interesting (to me) that it's been demonstrated by many now that building the core instrument can be done with fairly inexpensive hardware and still achieve same amazing results: this little groove box, the Woovebox, the Microdexed Touch and even the Minidexed, TE PO devices, and more. In the end it all comes down to how you can get something out of it in a repeatable, straightforward way (the UI). There have been some amazing user interface ideas out there - I think Woovebox is an interesting one for example, especially compared to what Roland or Korg has done with 7-segment LED displays :) I'd be curious as to your thoughts on the subject of user interfaces on these devices - perhaps it would be an interesting YT video at some point...

Thanks! I bought one and I'm doing my babysteps. So far, almost every print fails because getting the base temperature and the filament settings in the slice is really hard, haha

Answering that would be quite the essay! They have an overlap in functionality (both are sequencers, samplers,...) but I'd cautiously break it down like this: Woovebox is much easier to get into and get results out of. QUN is deeper and has some very unique audio processing tools.
