Jay, Amber, please don't leave this as just a song reaction: it NEEDS to be one of your movie reactions. I get why you don't do many movie musicals (editing is tricky), but this song is from literally one of the best musicals of all time. You adored Grease, and you'll love Cabaret. And Chicago. And Sweeney Todd.
For me, "Caberet", is the greatest movie musical of all time. Not just brilliant songs, incredible choreography but also a genuinely deeply moving story, that challenged what a musical could be.
When I firs saw Cabaret, I hated it. I think it made me uncomfortable in my little cocoon of a perfect life. But every time since that I watch it, I am more in awe. What an incredible movie, and what a performance by Liza Minnelli. You must watch the fullmovie. So many great songs, and interesting take on this period of Naziism.
@@j.r.cilliangreen4083 Fosse was a perfectionist who *demanded* excellence from everyone. He went way over budget and schedule, but he did end up with a masterpiece.
Cabaret was a film made in the 1970s, the story was set in the 1930s....Liza played the lead character and and won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Sally Bowles. Amazing talent!
Based on Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories, which was made into a film with Julie Harris and Laurence Harvey, after being on Broadway. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_a_Camera. the film is a must see - I think it's here on RU-vid
liza was one of Freddy Mercury's biggest influences. He adored her, and considered her performance in CABARET the film to be one of his biggest inspirations. He loved everything about her-her voice, her theatricality, her outrageousness, he also loved that even though she wasn't beautiful by conventional standards, she had a style and a flair and knew how to make herself someone that (as amber said in this very video) you couldn't take your eyes off! Freddy was inspired by Liza in how he presented himself as a star. He considered himself odd looking, but knew that he had something inside that could transcend what he felt were limitations about his looks. Montserrat Caballe, the opera singer who he did the "Barcelona" duet with, another opera singer, Maria Callas, and Liza were Freddy's big inspirations. you should watch CABARET on your movie channel. a brilliant film.
Weimar Berlin, “divine decadence!” The movie and play were adapted from a story written by Christopher Isherwood from his book “Berlin Stories” about his life in Berlin in the early 1930’s. Michael York plays his part in the movie. One of the best musical adaptations ever!
You really need to add Cabaret to your list of movies to watch. It's based on the musical and is an absolute classic, multi-oscar winning movie. Deserves to be on your channel.
You mention Freddie Mercury in this video - Freddie was a big fan of Liza and of this musical. There was a Freddie Mercury tribute concert held in 1992, one year after his death, and she appeared there and sang We Are The Champions, and she did a great job. She closes the show and all the other artists involved join her and the band on stage, it's quite moving, tbh!
Now watch Liza and Dudley Moore in the movie "Arthur", from the early '80s... Not a musical, but absolutely HILARIOUS... In addition to the main characters, you will LOVE Hobson, the butler in that movie...PLUS... You have already reacted to the theme song to the movie... It also had a sequel in the late '80s... There was also a remake in the 2000s, but unfortunately, it lacks most of the charm of the original...
@@sallym1171 Agreed, If you are only going to watch one of them, the original is definitely the one to see...2 was OK, but the remake/reboot did nothing for me... Glad Dudley Moore didn't live to see what they did to his classic masterpiece...
Liza Minnelli!! Never had the opportunity to see Judy Garland but when Liza came through Seattle, that was an opportunity to see her and she didn't disappoint.
One of the best Broadway singers of all time. Performed in Las Vegas and Broadway. That’s why her movements are so animated. She’s the greatest!! Made her mama proud!!! ❤❤❤❤
Judy Garland was in "Meet Me in St Louis" too. The song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" was written for her, and it's an amazing Christmas song.
Lisa won a well deserved Oscar for the movie Cabaret, which is where this clip is from 😊 ♥. 'MAYBE THIS TIME' is my favourite track from the movie but Mum's favourite song was CABARET, which you just watched 😊. Mum left instructions for this song to be sung at her funeral, in church. Sadly it was deemed to be unsuitable for church, but not by me. I don't think God would've been offended and it still makes me sad Mum didn't get her wish 😔. I'm pretty sure Mum didn't realize the song's about a call girl though, she felt it was a song celebrating why we should all enjoy life whilst we have it, and I can identify with that. Go Liza and Go Mum 🎉 ☺ ♥.
Cabaret is an incredible Broadway musical and film. It traces the fall of Berlin to the Nazi's just prior to WWII. It is wonderful and so so tragic. This song was glamorized for her for the movie, for which she won the Oscar but this song belies the downfall of Berlin to come. Thank you for this reaction.
Did you know "New York, New York" is Liza's song, NOT Frank Sinatra's? She first sang it in the movie of the same name, and Frank Sinatra soon adopted it as his own.
It's burlesque, Cabaret. One of the best musical movies ever. Cabaret won 8 Oscars, including Lisa's best actress award. Lisa and Joel Grey are brilliant together. If you can catch the movie, you definitely should. It's a really good, not just a lightweight musical.
Cabaret is a great movie that won 8 Oscars in 1973 you should react to!!! I saw Tina Arena as Sally Bowles in Cabaret on stage in Sydney, who was absolutely stunning in the role who you know from her single Chains which I think you've already reacted to.
Tina Arena is awesome. Unfortunately, she got lost the radio here on the U.S. because of Whitney, Celine, Taylor Dane, Gloria Estefan, and many others. She was supposed to big here like she was in her native Australia. I did like her version of "Show Me Heaven."
The film Cabaret was released in 1972 and won 8 Oscars with Liza winning the Best Actress Award. It was set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis were on the rise to power there. Legendary performance by legendary artist in legendary film.
Amber you're so right! When Freddie Mercury died, there was a tribute concert for him. Liza actually came out and sang "We are the Champions" in his memory with Queen and it was such a perfect tribute. She was so theatrical.
This was a scene from the movie Cabaret, and this scene took place in a cabaret (it’s like a night club where people went for food, drink, and entertainment). Jay you were spot on when you got the crooner vibe. In the final few years of the Rat Pack group, Liza was a member. They played Vegas often. Liza’s version of New York New York, rivals Sinatra’s version. Please check it out. Now regarding Judy Garland, I don’t believe you have delved into that rabbit whole. She along with Barbra Streisand are still considered two of the greatest singers of all time. Judy had her own TV show back in the 60’s. Two suggestions: The Man that Got Away, from A Star is Born (the first remake), and her tribute to Kennedy after his assassination, Battle Hymn of the Republic. It’ll bring you to tears.
Exactly, this is not just a musical, it also was about Europe before World War 2, the rise of the Nazis while some were just too busy having fun and looking the other way... with excellent musical performances
The musical Caberet was set in Germany 1930s. Caberets were a type of bar where music and comedy acts performed. Liza played Sally Bowles an American performer in Germany. So many great songs and performances from this show!
I think Amber mentioned Freddie Mercury and that is exactly the right reference! Mercury said many times how inspired he was by Liza, specifically her performance in Cabaret. Liza also sang at the FM tribute concert, so the connection is solid. Please see the movie Cabaret! Directed and choreographed by the late great Bob Fosse, it's a musical not to be missed. Great reaction guys!
Liza Minnelli and her mother, Judy Garland, were born to be (legendary) performers. You're right, Amber, you can't tear your eyes away from either of them! You two should definitely respond to CABARET.
Amber, it's becoming daily more evident that your grasp for musicality, for drama and message in performance, and even for personality and inflection in the singer, are gaining strength. Your ability to analyse and recognise form in music, and its importance in making songs memorable, is a mark of your good ear and intellect. Thanks for your enthusiasm. ❤
Freddie Mercury LOVED Liza, so I squealed when Amber mentioned Freddie's name! I highly encourage you to React to Liza singing at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. She sang "We Are the Champions," closing out the entire concert. Every performer eventually joined her on stage. Bring your crying towel... it's amazing.
Cabaret was a musical movie that was made in 1973. This was part of the movie. Liza also won an academy award for her performance as well as Joel Grey who was the MC at the beginning of the video😊
Joel Grey, father of Jennifer Grey, Baby in Dirty Dancing, Ferris's sister Jeannie (or Shawna 😂) in Ferris Bueller, and the original Mindy (Rachel's maid of honor who later married her ex-fiancé, Barry on Friends)
Not everyone. I adored Judy Garland, and Liza is overrated. She tried to be like her mother. But she will never be her mother. I actually prefer her other daughter, Lorna Luft. To me she is much more talented. I know, unpopular opinion.
Liza’s parents met when Vincent Minnelli directed Judy in the musical “Meet Me in St. Louis”, which would be another great film for you to check out! Liza first time in film was in the final scene of Judy’s film “In the Good Old Summertime” as a toddler! ❤
I love Meet Me, it's one of my favorite rewatches. I read Minnelli was falling in love with Garland during the making of this film, and it's why she's filmed so beautifully. She's just lovely in it.
I love Liza! Since y'all wondered, this movie was made in 1972 but it's set in 1929 and 1930 Be sure to someday watch LIZA WITH Z (1972), her one-woman show. My favorite song from that is called "Bye Bye Blackbird". If you want to see her being hilarious, check out ARTHUR (1981) or ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (2003). #RobSquadReactions #LizaMinnelli #Cabaret
Loved the Freddie Mercury reference and here's why. After Freddie passed an massive concert was given in his honor. Liza was Freddie's favourite singer. She surprised everyone when she came out and performed We Are the Champions. Liza with a Z ❤
She won a well deserved Oscar for this role, this song is great, but in my opinion her best song in the film is "Mein Herr" Now that would be one worth featuring on a future Friday female performance. You would see her complete range of talent, acting, dancing, and voice; you would not be disappointed.
You should for sure do a movie reaction for this one because trust me, if you've just seen this song then you are NOT prepared for what the overall story is about. Makes it even more bittersweet in context - Sally's perspective here is something she regards as romantic and life-affirming, but she has her head firmly planted in the sand and refuses to let anything draw it out. Because the darkness she's refusing to confront is some of the greatest evil in human history.
Liza, born and raised to be the consummate performer, is an EGOT winner (has won and Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), an amazing singer and dancer like her mother (you need to see and hear Judy sing Get Happy from the 1950 movie Summer Stock), was also wickedly funny in the sitcom Arrested Development and the movie Arthur is just great. A legend in her own right, which is pretty amazing considering how truly amazing her parents were (her father directed the classic movie musicals Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951), The Band Wagon (1953), and Gigi (1958) and Judy, well amazing barely covers it.)
Liza was also in one of the greatest comedies of all time, Arthur with Dudley Moore. It’s from the 80s and it’s freaking hysterical. She is adorable in it. I highly recommend adding it to your movie list. Sorry if none of this makes sense. I’m driving and doing voice to text.
Liza was as good as her mom, for sure. It's a shame she couldn't rise to do bigger things. Probably because she was Always compared, and that had to be suffocating.
Y’all should react to Cabaret (1972) the movie, and more Judy Garland movies (Meet Me In St. Louis is a great one) but in the meantime, to see Judy Garland as an adult, singing and showing her great legs too, I’ve always loved her performance of Get Happy from the musical Summer Stock (1950) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q7d0NRewzW4.htmlsi=G5h9kwYMuk8T3n5P
Liza is 77 big ones and still a character. "Cabaret" is a 1972 movie. Y'all should watch the musical "Chicago" with a tap dancing Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Renee Zellweger...impressive and y'all will love it!
Check out Liza as a teenager singing her mothers song Over the rainbow also she often duetted with the crooners like Sinatra and Tony Bennett and others , she also duetted with George Michael as well as charted in the I think early 90s with losing my mind , also a talented actress and dancer , amazing talent
Hi guys, thank you as always. Money Money from the film Cabaret is one of the best musical songs ever. Performed by Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey. Absoultely brilliant and funny. The movie was released in 1972.
Liza’s Dad was Vincent Minnelli, who was Judy Garland’s second husband. He was an Oscar winning director who was known for his exquisite use of color and artistic sets. He directed Judy in a fun family film - “Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944) which was his first time directing in Technicolor, and did a great job directing the film “Lust For Life” (1956) with Kirk Douglas as Vincent Van Gogh. 😊
Vincente Minelli also directed Ethel Waters and Lena Horne in CABIN IN THE SKY (1943), Fred Astaire in THE BAND WAGON (1953), Lucy & Desi Arnaz in THE LONG, LONG TRAILER (1954), Gene Kelly in BRIGADOON (1954), Leslie Caron in GIGI (1958), Judy Holliday in BELLS ARE RINGING (1960), and Barbra Streisand in ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER (1970).
Great choice and reaction. An amazing voice. The movie came out in 1972, three years after Judy Garland died, and won 8 Oscars including actress-Liza Minelli, supporting actor-Joel Grey (the MC at the beginning of this video and father of Jennifer Grey from Dirty Dancing) and song/score. This is Liza's signature song. She is also the original singer of New York, New York from the movie in 1977. Please listen to But The World Goes 'Round from the movie. Her voice is even stronger on that one.
The first concert I ever went to was to see Liza Minnelli in the summer of 1974 when I was 14. She was phenomenal and was basically her “Liza with a Z” show. I saw her live again in 1979. A phenomenal entertainer ❤❤❤
“I like the cabaret-ish sort of thing,” Mercury once said. “In fact, one of my early inspirations came from Cabaret”. In actuality, he fell as much in love with the film as he did with Liza Minnelli, who became a major source of inspiration: “I absolutely adore Liza Minnelli, she’s a total wow,” he said. “The way she delivers her songs - the sheer energy. The way the lights enhance every movement of the show. I think you can see similarities in the excitement and energy of a Queen show”. He added: “[Queen] have more in common with Liza Minnelli than Led Zeppelin. We’re more in the showbiz tradition than the rock ‘n’ roll tradition”. Detailing further, the singer continued: “On stage you either have the magic, or you don’t, and there’s no way you can work up to it. Liza Minnelli just oozes sheer talent. She has energy and stamina, which she gets across the stage, and the way she delivers herself to the public is a good influence. There is a lot to learn from her”.
Not only a great singer but also an actress. Cabaret is a movie in which Joel Grey is feature. His daughter is Jennifer Grey whom you saw as Baby in Dirty Dancing. Liza's father was director Vincent Minelli and her half-sister Lorna Luft (whose father was Sidney Luft, a producer) was also an actress and singer . Lots of talent running in the family.
Cabaret, the film, is terrific. Her character Sally Bowles is a very needy person who is flitting through life in pre-Nazi Berlin. My fav of her numbers there is the iconic “Mein Herr.”
I saw her in Las Vegas not long after Cabaret came out. She is such a superb performer, trained by one of the quintessential performers, her mother, Judy Garland. At the end of her show in Las Vegas, I saw something I never saw before or since. At the end, the entire audience leapt to their feet in unison, it was a standing ovation like none other. It wasn't like most, where some stand immediately while others follow. She performed songs from both Cabaret and New York, New York, which was another of her hit films. A very memorable evening, she was marvelous.
Liza May Minnelli is an American actress, singer, dancer, and choreographer. Known for her commanding stage presence and powerful alto singing voice, Minnelli is one of the very few performers awarded a non-competitive Emmy, Grammy (Grammy Legend Award), Oscar, and Tony (EGOT).
Cabaret was, actually, made in the 1970s! Part of what threw you off with your guesses is that Judy was only 16 when she made Wizard of Oz so, she didn't have Liza until later (and then Liza was in her late 20s when she did Cabaret) "Mein Herr" is another fantastic song by Liza Minnelli from Cabaret that you guys would really enjoy. It's kinda funny you guys mentioned crooners 'cause Liza is the one who, actually, originated Sinatra's song "New York, New York"! 😉 And if you guys wanna dive into her mother Judy Garland's songs, "The Man That Got Away" is a must listen!!
Cabaret is Liza's signature song from the movie for which she won an Oscar. However, please check out "Liza With A 'Z'" (her other signature song) and then watch the official Cabaret music video for "Mein Herr" and look at what she does with those chairs!!!
This isn't just Liza singing theatrically, “cabaret” is the title song from an actual Broadway musical. The clip you watched is from the movie adaptation of that musical, starring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles, a nightclub (aka cabaret) singer in Berlin in the 1930s, shortly before World War II. As someone else suggested, you might consider adding the movie “Cabaret” to your to do list for your movie reaction channel.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Judy was also quite the Broadway performer in her adult years. Check out her performance at Carnegie Hall!!!!
Amber hit the nail on the head as usual. Liza often tells the story of how her mother named her. Judy woke up in the middle of the night and told her husband, “LIZA MINNELLI! It’ll look GREAT on a marquee!!”
The film Cabaret came out in 1972. Liza like her mother was born to be a performer and it definitely shows in this iconic performance. Her father, Vincent Minelli was a stage and film director (40 films). Some of the classic movie musicals he directed include "Meet Me in St. Louis" (starring Judy Garland), "An American in Paris" (starring Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron), "The Band Wagon" (starring Fred Astaire & Cyd Charisse), "Bridadoon" (starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse) and "Gigi" (starring Louis Jourdan and Leslie Caron). He also directed the comedy "Father of the Bride" with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor.
Liza´s performance in the movie Cabaret is her best work, in my opinion. Singing AND dancing well isn´t easy on any terms and she does them both magnificently!!!! The choreography is done by Bob Fosse and is quirky and challenging to learn, let alone to perform well AND SING!!!!
Cabaret - the original stage musical was first produced in 1966, the movie followed 6 years later in '72. I grew up with Liza in movies and on TV. She's an absolute National Treasure.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU. THANK YOU. Love the tunes from the Movie Cabaret. Loved them all and thrilled you reacted to this one. PLEASE check out the entire movie--have seen at least 200 times. Wait until you hear her number. MAYBE THIS TIME. This movie about 1972. The setting of the movie is Belin in about 1932 before the Nazties took over.
The sad part of the lyrics to that song is that both Liza and Judy struggled with substance use disorder, which is how Elsie died. At one point Liza changed the line to “when I go I’m NOT going like Elsie”. Cabaret was a Broadway musical that was turned into a 1972 movie directed by the legendary Bob Fosse. Fosse was an eccentric choreographer with a distinctive style who popularized the use of “jazz hands”. Fosse won 9 Tony Awards in his lifetime.
I saw her live back in the 1970's and was blown away. I'd never seen anyone with so much energy. She was like the Energizer Bunny. It was at the Allentown Fair. She entertained for an hour and a half with no break - singing and dancing. Absolutely amazing!!!
Liza's father was legendary film director Vincente Minelli. He directed several classic motion pictures such as "Gigi"; "Lust For Life"; "The Bandwagon"; "The Story of Three Loves"; "The Bad and the Beautiful"; "An American in Paris"; "Father of the Bride" (starring Elizabeth Taylor); and "Meet Me in St. Louis") an absolute must for this Christmas season - it stars Judy Garland and it's in color).
This is a fantastic movie. You should see it in its entirety; when you do, you'll realize that this song has about three different layers of meaning. It won for Best Actress (Minnelli) Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey), Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound, Best Original Song Score and Adaptation, and Best Film Editing, and it apparently holds the record as the film to win the most awards without also winning Best Picture. I saw it twice in the theater when I was 13-no, my parents didn't take me, they were just negligent and never asked what movies I was going to see. (I also saw _Blazing Saddles_ that same year and _The Ritz_ in 1976, so yah, negligent parents).
A considerable and impressive sweep at the Oscars, especially when you consider that the movie that beat Cabaret for the Best Picture Oscar was The Godfather.
My favorite Broadway song! And the movie was great! Her voice is awesome. Powerful and she is a great entertainer and dancer. She had a fantastic TV special show called Liza with a Z. This was the 70s! This video is from the movie, Cabraret, made in the 70s.
Well, who'da thunk. Never expected to see this one. Thanks, for pulling that one. I think she won an Academy Award for that performance if i remember correctly. Amber if you ever do another of her songs. Her rendition of "New York New York" is really good too! Be well, my friends. Some day "Lady Marmalade" by LaBelle.
Liza was Freddie Mercury's favorite performer. In one of his final videos he dressed up like her. At the tribute concert for him, she came out and sang "We are the Champions".
This is an absolute MUST for your movie channel. Liza won an Oscar for this role. The movie was made in the early 1970s depicting late 1930s Germany as the Nazis were assuming power. Liza plays an aspiring performer in a nightclub (cabaret). Check out her dance moves in MEIN HERR.
Cabaret was 1973. Judy Garland was only 16 or 17 when she made the Wizard of Oz in 1939. A few of her other best musicals were Meet Me in St.Louis, Easter Parade, and In the Good Old Summertime. Vincente Minelli was Liza's father. He directed Meet Me in St. Louis I believe....and numerous other classics. Thank you guys for exploring so many different kinds of music and movies. You are honest with what you think in a way that is very respectful to the artists. And thank you for you warmth and enthusiasm and openness.
Great job you two with your platform as reactors! Enjoy seeing your experiences of movies, music that most of us grew up with. Please react to Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand duet 'Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again' performance from Judy's television show. You'll love it!
Cabaret is one of my all time favourite musicals. Some brilliant tunes. This movie version is exceptional. The man announcing is the fabulous musical theatre star Joel Grey whose daughter is Dirty Dancings Jennifer Grey
Liza With A Z! Cabaret is a movie worth reviewing...great music, fascinating story, another great from this movie, "Maybe This Time" or "Mein Herr". I'd recommend you read about German history from the early 30s in which this movie is set.
They sound very similar!!!!!React to the classic movie/musical: Cabaret. It’s incredible. It started as a Broadway musical. Liza is all Broadway. You are watching a scene from a Broadway show/ movie. She’s playing down snd outer 1920’s cabaret performer in Nazi Germany. It’s a killer film. Movie was in the early 70’s.
Cabaret has some deep background to it. As noted below, this performance is from the movie version of the musical theater production. The musical of "Cabaret" is by John Kander and Fred Ebb, who also did "Zorba," "Chicago," "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Curtains," and others. They also wrote the "New York, New York" song that Frank Sinatra made famous. The musical was based on the writing of Christopher Isherwood, a gay writer from Britain who spent time in Berlin at the time when the Nazis were rising to power. The musical is set in Berlin during that time, in the extremely raunchy cabaret where Liza Minelli's character worked and the boarding house where she lived. Berlin had a wild cabaret scene in the years between the two world wars, and the people in the play are part of that and have to decide how to react to the events happening around them. It's not a super-happy musical. But it's worth watching the movie, or seeing it on stage if there's a production near you.
Liza has everything ‼️ Judy Garland & Vincent Minnelli's daughter is everything their passion in every direction was‼️ Vincent was an Italian director. What a GREAT MOVIE you should review
