Australia's Prime Minister was declared missing on 17th December 1967, and the news was broadcast into homes around the country and overseas.
A massive land and sea search swung into action within hours, while ABC crews on the ground provided up-to-the-minute reporting in this early example of rolling news coverage.

I still don’t understand HOW WE LITERALLY LOST A PRIME MINISTER
@Methne555
@Methne555 3 года назад
Because he drowned while scuba diving. My parents said that it was a huge tragedy and story, obviously, at the time. Menzies also had the future of Australia mapped out prior to his resignation and Holt taking over. Holt’s death changed the course of Australia.

@@AZ2PM Yeah, there's probably lots of places like that where people, in general, don't know anything about the person the place is named for. But still, naming a swimming pool after someone who was presumed drowned, seems a bit of dark humor, there.
@madisonmoffat5613

He was famously known to be a swimming enthusiast, he was the federal parliamentary member for the area in which the complex was at the time being built. It's more than just some random pool, the complex was seen at the time as a significant advance for Melbourne recreational culture; and for civic culture given it's Brutalist architecture. I suspect the intended sentiment was well taken; and if the family somehow objected you can be sure the idea would have been quickly retracted.

I’ve not previously seen this coverage of the search for PM Holt. I was living at Ocean Grove at the time and remember the helicopters making sweeps of the coastline down as far as Anglesea. My father was a professional fisherman at Barwon Heads, and he doubted, based on his thirty years experience of the area, that a body would be recovered because of the offshore currents.

I love the Chinese submarine theory. It's so ridiculous and funny to imagine. This was a time when a prime minister could do as he pleased and I'm sure he thought he knew better but the ocean isn't something to mess with no matter who you are.
