On Islington Road in Newton, Mass., lives two-year-old Samantha Savitz, who is deaf, but boy, does she love to talk to anyone who knows sign language. And if someone doesn't, that makes Sam just a little sad. Which led her neighbors to undertake what can only be described as a most generous community project: hiring an instructor, and fully immersing themselves in an American Sign Language class. Steve Hartman reports.

Thank you CBS Sunday Morning & Steve Hartman for these lovely stories. In the toxic political environment we find ourselves, these stories show how many people do care for their fellow human beings. We need these kinds of stories everyday. They warm my heart.

In these times...communities seem to be a thing of the past. Thank God for this one. That beautiful child is lucky and so are her neighbors! Hopefully this will bring other communities together again.

You got that right. People you talk to all the time sell or move and don't even say goodbye.

Winds of March Journey/Perry tribute band: sad right? I wanna go back when we could sit on our front porch and the neighbors would wave hi or stop by. That’s what I call American values. When our communities had each other’s back.

I So enjoyed this video!! I was so over joyed to see a community come together for a small little girl named Samantha!! Just think of this community came together for her, what could other communities do to help children, no matter their age?? I think we'd live in a better place.. People helping people and going out of their way just to help someone in need.. those neighbors didn't have to learn, the Wanted to do it!! Thank you for this wonderful video CBS Sunday morning!! Let's see some more good news!!

When I drove a school bus, I had a few children with this issue. I always felt unable to ask them the same questions these kind folks did, Or others, You took that test how did that go? Did you ace it? You see them come on to the bus. You could tell they had a bad day, and you can't say anything to them to encourage them. I believe it is a forgotten language. We forget that so many use. I do believe it should be taught the same time we learn everyday classes at school. Why are we not doing this? Is it an old way of thinking that they should live in our world the way we make it. Is it not time we just step up a notch and place some effort in it. Sure it might be hard to start it, but in a generation or two at the most, we can open a whole new world not just for the death, but for all of us.

When I first read the comments someone suggested cochlear implants. I went to look for info about them. I've just come back with my results. I gave that comment a dislike not because I'm opposed to implants,, but because it was an over-simplification to imply that it's a solution for everyone. I know many ASL users are uncomfortable with this. Unfortunately, the greatest benefits come with surgery at as early an age as possible, so you can't just say to wait until the child can decide. But the parents of most young deaf children are hearing and have little understanding of the deaf and deaf culture, perhaps the least qualified to decide. They just sigh with relief for the option and cruise through the decision. Things to consider. Pay attention especially to the Link at the end: In addition to the implant, external pieces include a transmitter, which costs between $74 and $100; and a speech processor, which costs between $6,700 and $9,000. Cochlear implant surgery requires as many as three pre-surgery office visits. Audiologists will often be asked whether or not cochlear implants are actually worth it. ... Before asking if cochlear implants are worth it, one must remember that the cost of the anaesthetist and the surgeon's services, the cost of theatre time and support staff, plus disposables will also be added to that of the device Unlike a hearing aid, which simply amplifies sounds, a cochlear implant bypasses the parts of the ear that are damaged and instead stimulates the auditory nerve. The brain interprets the signals as sounds. Cochlear implants don't magically help everyone hear normally. In fact, they don't work for everyone.Aug 9, 2016 According to current FDA criteria, the indications for cochlear implantation are bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss for children ages 12-24 months and severe to profound hearing loss for 2-17 years, along with limited benefit from amplification, including minimal or no progress on age-appropriate auditory . “You can’t just put a cochlear implant on a child and be done with it,” she says. “There is still work involved with helping to develop speaking skills,” Oyler tells WebMD. “In and of itself, a cochlear implant is not a cure.” For some deaf people, the implant really is a positive, life-changing intervention. For others, however, cochlear implants are more nuisance than medical miracle. www.thisisinsider.com/why-deaf-people-turn-down-cochlear-implants-2016-12

Yeah, she could have hyperacusis and never find quiet due to the rent being too damn high... she's okay. She doesn't hear barking dogs, freeways, and neighbors bodyslamming doors. Yet if I asked for the doorslamming to stop, for example, or for people to not leave their dogs alone for 10+ hours at a time, I'd get hatred and retaliatory noise. If only adults could be as kind to eachother as they are to children.
