To explain the bleeding ear part when shouya's mother apologised to shoko's mother she made sure that she not only paid off the financial consequences of his bullying , She also ripped off her own earring and gave it to Shoko's mother to try and make up for the injustice that shouya did to them in an ‘eye for an eye' fashion.

17:33 This is even more awkward in Japan because people rarely say "I love you", even married couples. They usually prefer to show it through their actions. So her saying it must've been very shocking to him indeed.

I've heard the exact opposite. In English, the words "I love you" are a very big commitment. You wouldn't ever start dating someone by saying that. But in Japan, the culturally ideal progression of a relationship, especially in high school, is "supposed" to start with a confession of love early on. As opposed to the western idea that you naturally start to know you like someone by spending more and more time with them, and a relationship naturally falls into place. In Japanese, the phrase "the moon is beautiful" is a sort of cliché way that highschoolers confess their love to each other because of the similarity between the words for "love" and "moon". To me that suggests such a thing is common. I might be wrong but that's the impression I've gotten. What makes you think this?

Timothee made a great point: Shoya helped create the social hierarchy by bullying then he was moved to the bottom of that same hierarchy. I love that irony.

I think Kawai has a much worse personality than Naoka. I guess this depends on what one prefers more, but I would definitely choose the mean and overly honest friend over the mostly nice but completely fake friend who starts fake-crying, victimizes herself and pushes me under the bus when things go a bit wrong. At least Naoka was always true to herself and stuck up for Ishida no matter what.

Kawai does not seem like a too antagonistic character to me, she did nothing, at most she lied once or twice but for me it is not so much trouble XD

@@bakusatsugo2057 she gave the fake sign when they were singing together so Shoko start singing early. She's also laughing to whatever Ueno said when she made fun of Shoko. She's just the same as Shoya's elementary school friend, they throw Shoya under the bus just to safe their self. At least for Ueno, we know she's honest with her hatred towards Shoko and then we got to see that she tries to study sign language implying that she did try to accept Shoko, kinda redemption but with Kawai, we never know if she changed or not (at least from the movie)

I think both or them are quite annoying in different ways. Though I agree that Kawaii is terrible and a lot of viewers who don't fully pay attention don't even notice. She was just as mean to Shoko as the rest of the class and when anyone called her out she always played the victim and then even claimed she tried to stop them... And her act is so good that even someof the viewers actually believed her based on some reactions to this film I've seen.

So the money Shoya saved up was for his mom, it was his way of tying up lose ends in order to go through with his suicide. So she used it as a way of keeping that lose end from being tied to keep him from trying to commit suicide.

Yeah, don’t buy into Kawai’s act. She’s the worst person in the group. Not Ueno lol the manga goes more into it on them both. Kawai is very fake and not afraid to use the waterworks to gain sympathy. Ueno is the only one who actually took responsibility for the bullying. Kawai was more subtle and never took responsibility. What’s scary about her is that she genuinely believes she’s innocent and SUCH a good person. That’s creepy. However, I think in the moment where she was upset about not being able to finish the paper cranes was probably one of her few genuine moments. Read the mangaaaaa. So good.

Love how Shouya accurately called out the others during the bridge scene but because no one was willing to listen, it all just became one big fight. Communication isn't a one-way street. The receiver has to be open to understanding for the message to be effective. Also, I love that scene where Nishimiya was apologizing to Shouya's mother. For once, she's actually sincerely apologizing for something she has a responsibility for. She always used to apologize just for existing when it wasn't a sin. Of course, her self-hatred and her sewer of side attempt is not her fault, but she has a responsibility now that someone else got hurt. I also like how they didn't make Ueno and Nishimiya besties after everything. They've reached an understanding but they don't click with each other and that's fine. You're not gonna like everyone that's in your life, that's just normal.

8:27 "I'll stop trying to kill myself" This points out that his depression really took him over to the point where he can only promise to *try* to stop, but not to at a hundred percent certainty stop. There really are a lot of easter eggs here that you can only tell by watching it after several times.

I've watched this anime a couple of tines and I'm glad he caught up on the "X in the face" thing. For a while Shoya had Anxiety in the end he was also saved.

I dislike Kawai more than Ueno cause she's lying to herself and being self-rightoeus. She was incapable of recognizing her guilt and enjoyment out of the situations. Kids are fast to call on unfair or undeserved treatment, kids also take things literal and are inexperienced and ignorant. In the manga Ishida's and others missassumptions and missconceptions are easier to understand cause there's more story and background for the characters, including the teacher.

@@SusanaCanales1 Sorry, I meant more background story for the character, no that he had any missconceptions about it. The motive (partially at least) he had for not intervening was because people with disability are usually segregated to specific schools, and Shoko's mother wanted for her to try going a regular school so that she doesn't get less quality education.

Silent Voice is my all time favorite move. I love the way the movie represents each character. The reason why people hate Ueno in this movie is understandable, but IMO Kawai (the blonde girl) is a 100000 times worse as a person. She is the deffinition of a Narcissist. Ueno was a bully, she is mean but everybody knew that, if the dont like her behaviour they can just leave her out. On the other hand narcissists are much harder to spot and much more dangerous because they can deeply damage emotionally the people around them. They lack empathy, putting the blame on others and playing the "innocent" card in every situation. They treat every optinion towards them as a personal attack and they'll never admit they're Wrong. The most dangerous part about this is the fact that they actually believe they are right. The stories they create in their heads, they tell themself so many time they start seeing it as the reality. I had a Best Friend (and my biggest love) a year ago, she was the most important person in my life. Turns out, she trashtalked and lied to everyone around her, manipulating everyone for her own benefits and when the truth come out, she just started to push the blame on everyone else. On the climax of the events she said "Why woiuld I say sorry for anything, I never did anything wrong". I couldn't believe it. I still can't.... i had a serious depression period and it damaged my closest friendships rly badly. I love how "real" the characters are in this movie and after my own experience with narcissist people, Kawai is the only person in this movie that i can't stand. This is the type of person everyone should stay away from.

l really get that and reading the comments puts my heart at rest knowing that people see it wasn't only ueno who was "bad", kawai had a lot going on psychologically through the way she threw others under the bus saying it wasn't her. It's people who are toxic that aren't as forthright as ueno would make me feel like I could be made fun of instead of directly arguing with someone like ueno who would treat you like an equal.

@@jeanie8835 I have no idea how Kawai can have a clean conscience after being a bystander to someone getting bullied/harassed to the point they didn't want to live. I would be drowning in guilt if I did nothing to stop it. It's baffling she can call herself a victim.

Yo, spoilers people. If you haven't seen the movie, why are you watching a reaction??? Mini science/physics lesson! Water can be safe to land in from small heights. Yet the higher you are, the less time water has to move out of your way. A fall from that height might as well be similar to landing on solid concrete. (Not to say it didn't play a role in him surviving though) Great reaction to an amazing movie made by a beautiful company. I love Kyoani, you should check out some of their other works as well! *Cough* Violet Evergarden, Clannad *Cough*

I really feel for Shouko. I used to be bullied in school, had a learning disability and was always a year older than everyone else in my class. It was hard, but I had a small group of friends with me. This movie always makes me cry. Plus my husband is a suicide survivor.

Personally, it should’ve been Kawai. She can’t be trusted. At least, with Ueno, you KNOW what you’re getting with her. Kawai? She’ll turn on you so fast if she needs to. Ueno is hella loyal and actually cares about Shouya and the only one who made an effort to learn sign language. If even just to insult her. But even then, she doesn’t really mean it. That’s just how she is. But honestly, if you’d only seen the movie, Ueno seeming like the worst person is definitely understandable.

Hi Tim, I got here a bit later than planned but... Wow! I really enjoyed this movie so much. I do not actually remember seeing anime movies before my first trip Comic Con... where there were all kinds of characters from films and movies including anime... I was not the same after that lol . I found the topics of a lot anime are very different than the usual American cartoons and animated movies I have seen and I really appreciate the contrasts . Life is not all Little Mermaid issues or Monster's Inc. although those type of movies do hold a special place in my heart. Anime movies like A Silent Voice have opened up my heart even more... I was born partially deaf . I will not dump a lot of that here... noted that this movie hit really close to home and Thanks for reacting to this movie Tim. As usual I look forward to many more .

23:28 I like this scene since it shows everyone looking at the fireworks. There's a blank screen that just shows fireworks before cutting back to our protagonist. That blank shot was Kawai. The reason why we don't see her is because she's looking at herself in the mirror telling herself how everyone says how good she looks. Something that's better is Ishida and Nishimiya actually get married in the manga. Mangas more of Romantic with Dramatic elements while the movie is the opposite.

I'm pretty sure you figured out all the symbolism already. I think, and IDK if this is official or not, the X's were a representation of his anxiety and him closing off to people in general. I always cry and get chills at the ending scene cuz some of the feelings this movie portrays I can relate with. I also love that while the movie had romance in it, it also showed other types of interactions and things the characters had to deal with. I hate the girl that plays the victim and Ueno. Am I aware of the lesson they were trying to show? yes. Do I care? not enough.

By the way, "suki" means "I love you" while "tsuki" means "the moon". Just a nice Easter egg. Don't know if I mixed them up, but you get the idea. Plus, in the dubbed a deaf girl actually voices Nishimiya.

As much as I like this movie I think it would've been better if they had made it into a anime series instead has the movie leave out a lot of things from the manga, such as the development of a lot of the side characters.

Perhaps There is another first scenery of Nagatsuka by bicycle before his first contact scenery you knew and you watched. You will be able to know only with watching again. And during start and end of this movie, Ueno simply love Shouya through her faces at all sceneries. Thanks.

This was a really good movie, but I think one other you may like is Summer Wars. It's a very interesting movie built around themes of family and how it can bring people together in times of great need while also balancing a secondary plotline involving a rogue A.I that's causing hell everyone around the world by manipulating certain programs inside a huge worldwide digital hub called OZ. It's got great action, emotional moments, and the characters and animation are stellar. It's one of my all time favorite animated movies.

Ueno in the end wasn't wrong about pretend friendship thing... she said that about kawai.. the girl who started waterworks about gift not being completed.. she is actually fake... atleast with Ueno you can either not be with her.. or if she is making an effort you know it's real.. even if the effort is bare minimum it's still real... but not with kawai.. whatever she does is fake..

And shoya's mom wasn't being a douche. She was just worried so much she got angry and tried to find a way to convince him not to kill himself. She also said she wouldn't want that money because it was the money he saved up so he could kill himself afterward, so she doesn't want the money because she wants him to stay alive

I forget her name but I absolutely hated the blonde girl with glasses. She was so two-faced and really only had any regard for herself, thinking that she was also a victim when she wasn't. 🙄

The Eng Dub of this movie is actually more appropriate because the English voice actress of Shouko is actually deaf. The Japanese voice actress of Shouko is not deaf.

Hmm, i think Ueno get a lot of undeserved hate. She is actually honest and pretty straightforward. She doesnt conspire behind Shoko's back or anything similar. If she has a problem she just goes in your face and tells you. Ofc i dont agree with the way she physically acts against Shoko. She is jealous of Shoko, but not purely because of Ishida. So, in the reading scene in the beginning, the teacher "shames" Ueno for not reading good enough. Then Shoko reads worse than her but the teacher doesnt say anything because she is deaf. Ueno might not be deaf, BUT , she lives with her 3 (or 4) younger siblings and her old unemploeyd grandpa. She has to do all the housework. She also HAS to work to support them.. She doesnt have the time to study. She too has a hard life but noone would let her off the hook. Being poor and have to work for things that most people take for granted is not an easy task, especially for a teen. (Again, dont get me wrong, i m 100% against the physicaly abuse thing) So when everyone acts all kindly and forgiving and understanding around Shoko "just because she is deaf", she feels it is wrong, unjust. She feels jealous, underprivileged and sidelined. And most importantly, that noone gets it. That is why for me, one of the most emotional moments in this masterpiece of movie, was when Ueno tried to sign "baka". It really showed that she stopped blaming others for her own problems. And most importantly, she decided to stop letting those issues make her feel insecure and worthless and see herself as an equal to others and thus she tried to be a part of them instead of undermining them to trick herself into feeling better. (well that escalated a lot LMAO)
