Some people might criticize me for watching this movie dubbed, so I want to address it beforehand. I've heard that the English dub voice actress for Shoko, Lexi Marman, is deaf in real life. For me, watching the scenes where Shoko struggled to speak due to her speech impediment felt like a more authentic experience. Additionally, I filmed this reaction at 1 am (which is why I am wearing my pyjamas, lol) and was too tired to read subtitles. I wish those in the anime community who criticize others for watching subbed or dubbed would stop. Neither is the "right way" to watch anime; it's just a matter of personal preference. I hope y’all enjoy the video and check out the video sponsor Dossier!💖 dossier.co

The blonde girl is literally my least favourite character in this whole movie and it’s the same way for a lot of other people. Because she never even acknowledges how she also used to partake in the bullying. She always played the victim and blamed everyone else. She’s so infuriating!! Also YESSS Wolf Children was probably the first anime movie I watched and it was back when you could post full on anime episodes and movies on RU-vid. It made me cry so much it’s such a good and impactful movie. I also love Whisker Away too! All of these movies are my favourites along with Ghibli movies, so even if you can’t post reactions to them I still recommend you watch them because your life will change I swear.

For real! I loved the movie but a lot of those 'friends' in my opinion didn't need to get redeemed. Most of them didn't even do anything to prove that they changed or wanted to. Especially Miki (blond girl), she got no consequences and it annoys the crap out of me. I especially don't like how Shoya was being painted as the bad guy by the others for speaking tf up...they were all super hypocritical even after they threw him under the bus. It's not like Shoya was perfect either but at least he learned from his actions (because his mother was not having it lol) and made an effort to change. The bystanders were the real bullies in my opinion, Shoyo's actions stemmed from their influence and approval. (lol sorry I'm a yapper)
@Thebeezzkneezz.
@Thebeezzkneezz. 4 месяца назад
Well yes she is annoying, but when its clearly a mob mentality in that school, would you want to be the one to speak up? Sara tried to be friends with shoko and she was bullies so hard she left, its just like mean girls, its safer to be with her than against her *her being ueno* I was bullied my whole life, i never expected anyone to put themselves on the line for me. Blame the teacher , the adult who knew and did nothing not the little girl :/ She was kid, not everyone is strong enough to stand up (Not cool that she denied luaghing tho)

Right ? At least Ueko wasn’t Faking, she knows where she stands. The blonde girl personality was the most problematic In my Opinion cause till the end she never admitted being part of all this. She was so Manipulative. Gaslighting so much that she even gaslighted Herself. I was more ok with them being friends with Ueko cause we slowly see a change in her. But the blonde girl ? Personally I would never trust someone like this. When times get hard again she just gonna throw you under the bus and place herself as the victim. « No don’t do that » With a Smile on her Face. « I BEG him to stop, I was Scared of him ».. 💀

This movie is so special because where other movies would take the route of villanizing the bully and saying there's nothing good to him, they show that he's a person just as much as the victim. He's not necessarily a bad person, he just made bad decisions. I also like the inclusion of Ueno because it shows that while some people can change, others can't.

When shoko tried to confess her feelings “The moon is beautiful, isn't it?” could mean “I love you” in Japanese. It can be used to express romantic feelings indirectly,
@Sandwhaler
@Sandwhaler 4 месяца назад
Nah. In the Japanese she says "I love you" or "suki" which he misunderstands as "the moon?", "tsuki." She's being direct.
@kiwiparfaits
@kiwiparfaits 4 месяца назад
that is a common word play in japanese, but its kind of based on the fact that tsuki and suki sound quite alike (like prev commenter said) and with shoko's difficulty with pronunciation, it would be very easy to misinterpret what she said.

One of the few legit reasons in defense of the subbed. Picked it up immediately in subbed. Came off confusing in dub.
@Evnyofdeath

@@Sandwhaler There's a semi infamous example of Japanese Author Souseki Natsume choosing to use the phrase "The moon is beautiful isn't it?" in the place of "I love you" when translating from English to Japanese. He almost certainly chose to use a reference to the moon because of the wordplay between Suki (Love) and Tsuki (moon).

She was so much worse in the manga. I guess they cut it out because they didn't have much time to put it into the movie but it was very clear she was a narcissist. Also, the scene after Shoko's attempt in which she 'confronted her' was even worse too...she managed to make it all about herself. I really don't remember much from it since I read it a long time ago, but that much I did.

Nah, Shoya's mother ripped her earring out of her own volition, there's no reason for them to have fought, and it's never suggested that they did. The whole reason they even met was to apologise, and Shoya's mother believed in an eye for an eye way of doing it... or in this case... ear for an ear.

I can still vividly remember the punches, the stomps, the taunts, the exclusion, the loneliness I felt being bullied through middle to high school. We remember the good moments but sometimes it's overpowered by the hurtful times. This movie saved my life, I hold it very dear and serves as a therapy for me. Hi Rukiya! This is a great movie. As a deaf kid growing up, I faced a lot of bullies, as did Shoko. There's also another hint about Deaf culture: eye contact is a way to connect with others, so if you break eye contact, it's considered rude; this is a nice touch of the main character to finally make eye contact toward the ending.

The anime series A Sign of Affection also centers around a deaf protagonist, but it's a slice-of-life and very wholesome series so it's not likely to ever leave you an emotional wreak unless you're prone to sweetness overload. I recommend the sub though to start so you don't miss what any text says since it tends to be relevant a lot of the time.

ugh i always cry at the end of this movie even if it's a reaction. as someone who had struggled with crippling social anxiety as a kid and teen, the X's on the face and not being able to hear things around you is a perfect depiction of how it felt for me. although i still have those moments, i'm glad to say the X's are off and i can hear now. also that scene and the ending of Queen Charlotte just break me. thinking about it, i realized that they are both bittersweet scenes with a happy ending. watching something so emotional and depressing and finally getting that relief of happiness is such a rollercoaster.

A thing many people miss about the blonde girl is in the first choir song… she starts early & smirks when Shoko starts singing early. I think she did it just to then say what she said & “look good.” The manga goes a little more into it. Granted, this is a beautiful adaptation. After reading the manga the animation has LOTS of subtle references to it that just couldn’t all be included in a film. Great reaction. I love that you react to dubbing. Dubs vary in quality, but most nowadays are pretty good.

I don't know if someone else already said it first in the comments, but regarding the "moon" part of the dialogue in japanese she says "suki" (i like you) and the pronunciation is similar to the word "tsuki" (moon), so that's why he misunderstood what she said from "love" to "moon", it's a line of dialogue difficult to translate in the same way since it's all based on the pronunciation ^^

I am 27 now and still have problems with loving myself I was bullied so much that we moved three times and the whole time I was quiet and I never said or did anything. I was dealing with trauma from when I was younger by SA from my cousin and so my outlet in life was Disney and always being kind and nice. I have anxiety or diagnosed with it and depression at a young age and it’s been so hard with also I was bullied for my skin (not because I’m black) but I was born with a rare skin birthmark that left spots on my face,my teeth grew in all at once and I was made fun of for that and my weight for being small so yeah…I cried for soka because I saw myself as her and it’s crazy how the little bit of sunshine in this world usually is told to be realistic by people who aren’t happy and that’s not what you should do. Those people who are happy and such usually are the ones suffering the most. So I love that you are kind and caring and I see myself in you as a person. Thank you for reacting and being your authentic sweet self.

A week after this movie was released..there was an attack on the studio that made this movie. According to a few articles an arsonist set the place ablaze killing a lot it people in the process. I feel as tho it’s important people know this because this film came out with the cost of alot of lives. Here a link if you wish to know more about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sf8YtVHpE-U.htmlsi=JozPqKtFhel6jPSM Those lives may have been lost but their work through master pieces like this will live on.

Reason why Rukiya is my favorite reacter. 1: she’s pretty. 2: she actually “reacts” unlike some other who just stay still. 3: she’s funny. Btw Day 7 of asking Rukiya to react to Slumberland!❤❤❤

I don’t condone any type of bullying and I understand the feeling of not wanting to forgive or give a second chance but two wrongs don’t make a right, and unfortunately thats what I’m seeing in the first few mins of this reaction. Gonna keep watching and hopefully that changes

If you want to learn more about the friends' group relationships and why certain characters acted a certain way, then read the manga. It focuses on the other characters more than just the Sho's relationship

Imagine any movie you've ever seen and how the bullys character would never fit in this movie. You have sympathy for the bullied, and the bully. Everyone is deserving of our empathy and compassion because that just might be the way you make true human connections.

Quick reminder that a silent voice isn’t a romance anime at all. It’s an anime about a boy starting to love himself again. +The „silent voice“ isn’t actually Shoko it’s actually Shoyo because he has trouble communicating with others😭

When I was around 8 years old, I was bullied in my school for being a little bigger than the other girls in my age group considering I started developing at a really young age so it caused me to get early depression. It really took a toll on my life as I got social anxiety from it too because I constantly thought that others would be judging me when I entered a room or I was just in public so I also started wearing baggy clothing. Because of this I also developed an ED (eating disorder) where I would secretly starve myself for some days as my own parents also struggled to get me to eat. Because of depression, since I was starting middle school and it was during covid I wasn't really doing well in my classes where in one I had over 18 missing assignments and I genuinely felt so alone during the whole thing. It had even gotten to the point where I had grabbed a knife and was about to kill myself when I was alone at home. But to be honest, the one person who made me realize that they were there for me was my older sister. When she found out about the 18 missing assignments, she didn't scream at me or yell at me like my parents did, she looked at me and was like, "are you okay?" and that's where I broke down and started sobbing in her arms. Its been 4 years since that happened and since Ive been recovering from my depression, anxiety, and ED. So when I saw this movie for the first time and the scene that all the X's on everyone's faces fell down, I started balling my eyes out because I remember what it felt when I was going through depression, I felt that everyone hated me or judged me or either didnt like me and the X's falling down demonstrate how you finally snap out that mindset. Bullying isn't cool nor can it ever be justified, it just leads to people getting hurt.

This movie is groundbreaking in the sense that it shows that people aren't truly black and white, and you can't look at human beings that way. We are ever growing and evolving. Especially when we grow from childhood, to adolescence, to adulthood. There are things we don't understand about the actions we take against others, and how that might affect them until it's too late. As most people say, hindsight is 20/20. People grow and change, that's the nature of life. If you are a bullheaded, unevolving creature that never choses to learn from their mistakes, then that means that you've chosen to limit yourself to ideals you don't truly understand. One terrible act doesn't mean you can't turn your life around in the future and do everything you can to make up for the mistakes you've made, even if those changes don't earn you forgiveness. It's more about taking accountability for your own actions and learning to become a better person because you've learned from your mistakes, not because you're seeking forgiveness or validation from those who you've wronged. Childhood is a difficult time when it comes to creating social relationships, and Ishida is a great example of that. From the very first time he met Shoko, he was fascinated by her. She was someone who was different; someone who it was really hard for him to understand. When you consider the type of school environment they were placed in (one where the students were forced to take on the burden of accommodating Shoko's disability instead of an adult being present to support her), it's not surprising to me that the other children would grow to resent her. Is it right? Absolutely not. But when you're a kid just trying to fit in with your classmates, impress your friends and grow a support system, you're going to follow the crowd and do what everyone else is doing, even if it isn't right. You're a kid, and you haven't been taught any better. You're going to look at your peers for guidance, and it's fair to say that Ishida didn't have good examples to follow, excluding his mother. Though I've never been a bully, I was heavily bullied as a child and often taken advantage of. But for me, the ending of this film with Ishida was the moment I burst out bawling in tears. Because I understand what it's like to completely isolate yourself from other people, and that opening yourself up and making yourself vulnerable to others can be one of the scariest moments of your life. It's so relieving, but it's also terrifying. Trusting others is extremely difficult, especially when the people you've grown up with haven't proven themselves to be trustworthy. You end up doing a lot of self-reflection, and become hyper-aware of the people around you, to a point that you feel like you can't even communicate with anyone anymore. Even the people you love. The level of self-hatred Ishida feels throughout the film is something I can relate to, and it's honestly hard to watch. Some people may think he deserves it after what he's done, but he doesn't. No one should be made to feel that way; that one choice you made in your life is worth ending your life over. Shoko's acceptance of him was the only thing that gave him hope of learning to love himself and be proud of the changes he's made in his own life. She was the one who taught him how to live, even though he contributed to a lot of her pain. He realized that, in the end, their thoughts and feelings weren't so different. If more people could learn to grow and open themselves up in the way that Ishida did throughout the film, the world would be a much better place.
