Make this a series do minor and diminished as well if you have time! This was really great. It shows the importance of notes and how they interact, when Steve Vai says he would sit on notes for ages and have them “become his friend” get to know those notes. I now know this is the kind of thing he meant. Very helpful Kiko, thanks!

Hi Kiko, You are not only a great guitarist you are a even Greater teacher. If you can teach a 69 year old bass player how to play guitar better you must be a genius. I would love to meet you and just talk about music or jam . You definitely have excellent communication skills. Stay safe and well and have a great 2022. Your the best. I have tons of knowledge in music theory and I played that sort of stuff since I was an amateur but I didn't fully understand it until I was told about things like hybrid chords, polychords, chord scale theory, triad pairs or polytonality. If I had explored only the terrain I was given I would have spent years of using only a very limited approach of tonal harmony with a very strict voice leading. I think that theory brings you to the next level but only when it's combined with a genuine intuition. There are a plenty of things I've found years ago but that I understood in a theorical way much later. I know that at the beginning you're taught theory in a more limited way for historical and pedagogical purposes but you should be told about that. If you tell a kid that he/she (for example) shouldn't writte parallel fifths but you don't tell him/her the whole context he/she, then, will believe that it can't be done no matter what. As Adam Neely says, "a little bit of music theory is dangerous". Only when you learn of a wider context and understand that Bach had very different rules from Stravinsky and both of them from John Coltrane, you actually free yourself from music theory stigmas.

I’ve been playing for about 10 years, and I’m decent, not amazing but I play in a band, we’re putting the final touches on our first album, should be done by Feb. - Mar. But I’m completely self taught (outside of friends giving advice) but never have taken lessons. In those 10 years I’ve watched so many RU-vid videos and I have learned more from 2-3 of these Kiko videos then all of the others combined. Thank you Kiko, you make this look so easy! One day I will be at your level! 🤘🏼😝🤘🏼

So I started playing drums and guitar when I was 5 (got my first drum kit on my 5th birthday) I never took any lessons, so I learned by watching and playing along to my Zeppelin and Kiss Records...(to start) later in life I learned about Hawaiian style guitar c refer reedy to as: Slack Key. Starting with the 6th string D,A,D,A,A,D. Everything I knew about guitar to that point was almost useless, this allowed me to be totally free “Exploration” and play with no rules, no expectations, and no boundaries.. in last September I finally picked up a bass ..(why not?) interestingly 3 weeks later I found myself having a 1 on 1 lesson with non other than Billy Sheehan... this was such a profound experience that I now am completely in love with Bass and everything Bass... I decided that I now after 42 years (on & off) of playing I want to understand music in a different way. So, I’m now teaching myself ...with books, scales I never completely learned & modes... I aim to one day have another lesson with Mr. Sheehan and he see my enthusiasm and improvement... ultimately be in a wiring band and doing what I feel I was born to do. Thank you Kiko for also being an inspiration... if only I could be working with you, it would be an endless education and ultimately I would be a better musician each day

5 minutes in, and this monster of a man sounds better than 14 years of me with just two chords....It takes real talent to take two chords, six notes and play them the way you play...i will do the exercise, even when i play mostly for myself, not thinking of making new music or something, it's just my hobby, but i guarantee i will not sound close to what you sound lol...

Harmonies are difficult to write with no theory, basically take a note and go up a major or minor third within the scale, 6ths also work

Hey Kiko, great video! To get more theoretical :) this concept is called 'triad pairs' right? I was wondering if you could demonstrate how to use these for soloing over changes in a future video? In particular maybe changes that are common in jazz like 2-5-1s.

Jamiroquai would say"Travelling without Moving..." jajaaj Nice to explore just by enjoying music...is kinda travel and expand your own expression But this that seems so obvious, is what most of us forget (I include myself) ..just because we want to" know".. Or go for a song, we want to learn..but not get in contact with our innate own musicality.. The only teacher I 've seen along the years that really encourages us to do this, is you, Kiko...!! And I'll never be grateful enough ! I really admire, and love you, and your music, and your Megadeth stuff, too.. Thaks, forever! And have a great 2022 , you and your family!

I think I've done this instinctively, and I hear you on the creativity... but I rushed back into playing after 20 years, went out got a Jackson with a FR, I had one before, long time ago, but forgot everything. It sat around not setup. I'd play it but no fun, you gotta know. Finally, I decided to either trade the Jackson and a Gretsch Falcon I have for a different bridge, but I took one last shot, sucked it up, got the tools out, found everything I needed to know on YT, watched the videos. I learned how to set that bad boy up, block it off, and most importantly WHY and HOW it works. I think I'm at that point now with theory... my mechanics and coordination progressed so much because I wasn't concerned with theory for a while. I just wanted that guitar in my hands as much as possible. All day and night some days. I felt like the more I played, the more right I was in the head, and coming from where I did, I'll take it. I was a life long addict. My wife and I got clean together, almost lost our kids at one point and probably would have I'd we didn't have family. This is all so much more to me than music. It's a new and beautiful way to live. Love to you and yours, to everyone out there. Over 5 years clean

@CristianoTonelFetter

I've always created music, since the beginning. I was able to create tons of riffs, full songs, solos (It doesn't mean I'm a some kind of virtuoso, I was just having fun). Learning a little bit of music theory gave me tools to be even more creative. But something happened when I started to dig deeply into music theory, I became paranoid about rules, about "right" or "wrong" and how to explain what I was doing, that I wasn't able to create so fluidly like before. So I decided to chill out and let it flow again, be more intuitive like how I used to be. Because in the end it's all about having fun.

Whoa that's very cool! I loved megadeth as a teenager and now I can learn from megadeth guitarist on RU-vid :D After learning some riffs I realized that I can't really play anything "out of my head". So now I focus mostly on internalizing caged and triads and it is such a simple idea that I can actually include in my practice. BTW I was on your live show in Poland and it was great.
