Frank Sinatra had a great tip for a singing exercise to improve your voice.
He mentioned it in a HBO documentary called "All Or Nothing At All" where he discussed a period of his life when he was taking singing lessons three times a week.
You can't let your sound fall back into your throat.
As you heard me demonstrate in the video, it's very important to not let your sound fall back into your throat when you sing.
This is what Frank Sinatra knew was crucial to his singing. And when you hear him sing you will see him demonstrate this beautifully.
Keep Your Sound In "The Mask".
When you keep your sound up in your "mask" you will have so much more control over it, and your tone quality is going to be much better.
Also, you won't wear your voice out. You see, when your voice starts falling back into your throat you are bound to start using your swallowing muscles and moving your voice box around.
When this happen, your voice is going to get very sore over time.
A nice little tip you can use to keep your voice out of your throat and up in the mask is to put your hands on your cheeks. Then as you sing, concentrate on focussing your sound above your cheeks.
Practise this for a while and you will get great awareness as to when your sound is falling back, and you will be able to keep it in your mask much more easily.
And be sure to listen to a few Frank Sinatra performances!
Notice how he has that beautiful crisp tone quality. When you keep in mind everything we've just discussed, you'll almost be able to hear how his voice is focussed into his mask, and not falling back.
This is a very effective singing exercise to improve your voice, so be sure to play around with it!

This tip is so memorable because Sinatra is the last person you's expect to hear it from. Hes one of those voices that makes you think its coming from the bottom of his throat.

The tip is from 0:57. Do it using the tongue and do it without involving the tongue. Huge and instant increase of power.

In New York, Sinatra found jobs singing for his supper or for cigarettes. To improve his speech, he began taking elocution lessons for a dollar each from vocal coach John Quinlan, who was one of the first people to notice his impressive vocal range !!

I've got the book which he wrote in collaboration with his vocal teacher - John Quinlan - called "Tips On Popular Singing" and have to say it's a gem of a find if you can get a copy.

Please make a video on how to avoid sounding nasal on higher notes

pretend like you have a cold and close the nose off in the back of the throat. Impersonate someone who sounds stuffy when they have a cold to get the feel of it. Then make double sure you are not closing your throat too much when hitting the note, pretend like you have to yawn a little and this will give the voice a sound similar to Pavarratti. Its called an open throat technique and you will find yourself yawning because it invokes the same feeling, but as you strengthen the muscle that controls that the sensation of wanting to yawn goes away. Basically what you are doing when you sing high and it sounds nasally is your closing your throat and opening the nasal passage, forcing the sound to resonate in the nasal passage. So it thins out a lot because the cavity is small. Mostly the cause of it is people trying to sing low enough so no one hears them, sing like you are saying "hey" to someone across the room. Hope that helps, good luck man.

I am very new to singing and its terminology. Is it possible to implement the vocal fry or somehow thicken your vocal cords or will that pretty much goagainst everything you’re saying right now?
@cjcosta
@cjcosta 3 года назад
The goal is to keep the vocal folds stretched and thinned out, the only thickening that should occur is gained over time as you slowly build the voice and get stronger in your proper technique. The thickening (which is actually just strength and muscle toning) will happen in the outer edge of the folds, you must beware of forcing this as it will wear on or even damage the inner mucosal edges. If you are looking for a thicker sound, it does not come from thicker folds, but from developing your proper technique which lifts the tone into the full resonance structure (your whole head, more or less) where the sound can fully develop. Getting to that point without belting or pushing is a journey, so be patient and get as much Bel Canto training as you can and vocalize daily. IMO the best exercises for growth on YT is Jeff Rolka's channel... good Luck!
