The pickup driver was probably a retired swift driver

I'm posting this to hopefully educate some people because there seems to be a lot of people posting that it was dumb to build a town around a railroad track, or that it was dumb for the town to let them build a track in the middle of the street, etc. This is not a "town planning" problem. It's one of those problems that crop up with progress. There are many street-running train lines in small towns in the US and they are there as a legacy of the days in the early to mid twentieth century when passenger trains would stop in the middle of small towns to pick up passengers because the towns couldn't afford to build proper train stations. So the railroads would put a line smack down the middle of the town, usually main street, and put out stairs for the people to get on and off. You can see it in many movies of the period. La Grange was founded in 1827, long before Railroads were even built in America. Oh, and here's a bonus lesson: La Grange was named in honor of Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de la Fayette. Yes the same "Lafayette" who commanded Revolutionary troops here and helped The United States of America win its independence from Britain. The city takes its name from his country estate in France, the Château de la Grange-Bléneau. La grange in French means "the barn". lol

I have lived in LaGrange ky for 50 years. You would not believe some of the train incidents I’ve seen over the years.

I was at that intersection. I was the first car, waiting for the light to change, on the street to the left of the video. I was visiting a friend nearby and had NO idea about this train coming right through town. When I saw it starting to cross the intersection, it's mind-blowing! I still find it hard to believe that a train comes right through this street in this town!

Now that is a patient and professional Engineer.

That driver must have gone home and died of embarrassment!

Wish I lived in a town where these trains travelled down the streets like this in the middle of town. An inconvenience sometimes sure but I love these things.

They actually moved most of the town away from the tracks. This is the historic district, where the buildings look like they did centuries ago. It is possible to avoid this area but still is the quickest way to get from place to place so we take a chance of getting stopped by the trains. So children count the cars as they pass and people on the street wave. The trains come into town at 10 miles an hour and use bells, whistles & horns to warn people so we have plenty of time to get out of the way. This guy's error was in not looking & listening before trying to cross the tracks, then deciding to try to pull over in a too-small spot to wait for the train to pass without realizing that his trailer wouldn't clear. He could have veered sharply to go straight. It just caught him off guard but that's what the engineers are watching for and why they pull into town slowly enough to stop. We have visitors from many states and countries who come just to see this and take photos. They eat lunch in one of the restaurants and watch the train cars pass by the windows. We love that trains go down the middle of Main Street! It's what makes La Grange, Kentucky unique and quaint! It's a beautiful sight.

We have a similar situation in Oakland California. However, it is a double track mainline down the middle of the street. A LOT more rail traffic. The main difference is that the trains get their own lanes, and the traffic gets a lane each way. There are signals and stop lights at each intersection. Also, there is no on street parking for cars on this section of street. Freight and commuter traffic plus Amtrak share that street. So it functions similar to a light rail down the middle of the street, I think it is cool!

I suppose they have a low speed limit for trains coming through. At least the engineer could stop the train before hitting the trailer and the truck driver was able to get out of the way and go the long way around. Same thing with the second truck, the driver had a last second change in plans.

I love how people just start driving once the gates go up, like they didnt just sit there and watch what just happened!

I love this town and I love the trains. Thank you train engineers. I never park on that side when I shop there or eat there.

Smart to go through a town like this slow. Plus after the truck and trailer exited,the engineer did not move so the gates opened and let the people who waited the longest go! Whats not to like about that lol

for some of us , the train is going about 15 M.P.H. at the engine , but the end of the train is going around 50 by the time it makes it to town , these are 2 miles long at times .

Why are all these toxic people hating the driver when the driver clearly didn't see the train almost before it was too late, the driver was clearly panicking when he saw the train coming, come on guys, do u not see the driver trying to get out of the trains way?

Obviously an old seasoned veteran at the controls of that train, I would have never thought to stop.

Saw a classic Betty Boop cartoon where Grampy was mayor but he'd fallen out of favor with the voters. So he made a bunch of small changes throughout town to make them love him again. One of the changes was rotating crossing gates so they came down in front of trains and allowed cars to pass. Everybody cheered for him again. Funny.

In fairness... This is a highly incompatible zone at the best of times! A train right down the middle of the center of a town business district... with a fairly narrow road, and parking in front of the shops. Unless you a a local, and truly know the drill, weird stuff is pretty much guaranteed to happen on a frequent basis. We train lovers really like this stretch of track, but it’s gotta be a pain for those that live and work there! As an example of urban/town planning, it completely stinks!

At least he was able to stop and remain calm. At least no one got hurt.

To be fair to the truck driver , the lights and barriers weren't down when he made the right hand turn but after he turned he saw that the exit was blocked by the train and tried to park it into a space too small.

Train driving down the main street.... what could go wrong...

I absolutely love when the gates go up and the one utility truck pulls out to make the righthand turn and just see's the train sitting there and nopes out. Like, if that person wasn't from around there and didn't know it was an actual train line and thought it was just a tram line or something and you just see a big CSX engine staring you down XD

I am trying to work out why America has trains running through town like this.

What a wacky place to have a railroad going down the middle of a street with two-way traffic and parking on both sides. I just looked at this in Google StreetView. There doesn't appear to be enough room in the East-bound direction to get out of the way of a train if there are cars parked along the side and the West-bound direction looks highly questionable. CRAZY!

I love watching these videos. I'm a train fan. First, there's a LARGE X in a box on the corner. I think that means you can't park there. Second, the guy in the 2nd white trunk knew better than to ever attempt to make a right turn!!

I don’t think this guy was originally planning to park there, but rather he was trying to park there after he turned and realized the train was coming, so he pulled his truck there to try and get out of the way. It ended up not working. Fortunately the train was able to stop.

I actually think the ute driver handled it well. The first back up he did not stick his trailer out into the intersection. Then when he realized he could not make it into the spot he backed up fully and got out of the way of the train as quickly as possible.

If they still allowed engineers to gently quail an air-horn instead of automatic 200psi by just pressing the button, this probably wouldn't be a quiet zone, and the train crew wouldn't be so handicapped. How ironic...

Whose idea was it to build a railroad smack dab in the middle of a 4-way intersection going against oncoming traffic.

You can tell who has never pulled a trailer around in a long dually. Or a trailer at all. I think he did fine considering he probably got caught off guard way after he entered his turn, while looking in his right mirror to keep his right rear trailer tire off a curb or pole (second nature pulling a trailer to do that) but looked ahead and saw a train in, during the middle of his wide turn. He tried to just scoot over enough but quickly realized the train would hit the trailer. He backed it back up onto the other street like a champ and went on his merry way in under a minute. I probably would have done the same exact thing. As I’m sure most of you all would too.

This video, among many others, is why there should be a different permit for drivers on their skills of using a trailer/RV.

I vote the truck driver was hoping to get into that spot just to get out of the way and it was a no-go. If he or she had a do over the truck could have made a tighter turn sooner and had a safe spot to pull back into the street after the train passed.

The oldest bar in Indiana is in the Lahr Hotel pre civil war. 5th street Lafayette. The L&N went through too, till a late 90's riverside rerouting. A band was loading up after a long blues night and I suddenly had to tell someone double parked with the band van "there's a train coming" you need to move now. There was that little room on one side of the street! Lincoln's funeral train passed that route, Mark Twain stopped in for a drink. Arms may come down but in that block it's extra wide on the other side and it is the farmers market since even earlier than all the rest. As with so many Midwest towns a river runs through it but it's on a trunk line. Location, location...

That was one of my territories I ran between Cincinnati to Louisville ( The Short Line) Every year county fare time people would line the street just to walk in front of the train trying to get you to stop.

I used to work on that street. They talked about building a new track for the train, but I think it was too expensive. Anyway, a lot of people like it the way it is. The kids especially.
