i reccomend replacing the multiples with disting mk4 from expert sleepers

A Disting EX Plus Alpha would be an even better option

You could replace the doepfer mult with a Disting mk4. It's supposed to be pretty cool for the hp it takes up.

Es8 and Es9 and the expansion modules are for live performances excellent and recording… and for using modules you don’t yet have…. And chains of modules or things like max msp live

Warp is all about cross mod and if you’re not doing sound design it is still necessary to create complex oscillations, modulation, waveforms in general replace the buffered mult with the add2 hour analogue it’s a precision adder and averager.. way more dynamic complexity

Interesting. No attenuverters, mixers, or vcas and you still manage to make good sounds with this rig. That's proof that in eurorack pretty much everything beyond prescribed old recipes is valid

Nice presentation... thanks. I would replace it with Steve ms 22 dual vcf ;)

You're making music that's as close to what I want to make out of anyone on You Tube. It's fortunate then that your videos are really good. They're short, to the point, and you explain things really well. And your music is clever and well structured. Keep up the good work.

Thanks man, can't say how much it means to get these kind of comments. Hope your own music making is going well!

Looking at your case, obviously randomly, I'd think maths is a big offender. Imho there are other options that would blow it up, eg stages with quinem firmware. All the random, lfos, envs, even oscillator in 14hp....

Love my Doepfer modules and got started in modular with a Doepfer A100 Basic System that launched my journey. I still use most of my Doepfer modules because they are dead simple and so good.
@nivenofficial

Couldn't agree with you more, Doepfer was totally the gateway to modular for me and where I learnt the basics.

For warps, you really need two similar waves going into it in order to get sounds that aren’t too gnarly. Plug the 2 outs of plaits into it and you’ll have a hard time getting something that sounds bad out of it.

I always use warps for the vocoder feature. You can run chords from plaits as the carrier and some drums as the modulator for some fun rhythmic chord stabs

WMD has a range of physical modeling drum modules. I think they have 5 total with the fracture being one of them.
@nivenofficial
@nivenofficial 2 года назад
Yeah I’ve seen those, always feels like the rest have a bit less range than the fracture, I’m definitely tempted by the kraken :)

I was just scaling back on my modular but…I am very interested in the salmple, fracture and taiko…basically your top row!

Love all of those modules, the squid and fracture both really take you into a sound world that's unusual for a modular synth.

The Befaco EvenVCO might be a good sub out for that Doepfer one, it has an octave dial and sounds quite nice, although only has one "complex" waveform.

I notice the monome grid in the background, surprised you didn't make use of Ansible or the Teletype?

I'd consider swapping out your mult for dedicated logic modules such as MI Kinks, Instruo eas, XODES malleable logic block or something similar (audio rate sequential switches?) that makes your modules do things together that Ableton either just can't make them do or would take lots of CPU power to do.
@amygdalos96
@amygdalos96 2 года назад
The ES-9 was a game changer for me. Seems expensive on first glance but imagine multitracking only 4 mono signals out of your rack. You need 4 line outs in some form and a interface that has that many inputs. That alone costs pretty much the same and the ES-9 got like 14 inputs. I find it curious how little it gets talked about because it is literally the only I/O you will ever need.

How cool my travel 6u setup is very similar to yours before I even watched your video! I use Batumi instead of Maths in my travel case and Ornament and Crime. I use a small eurorack mixer into external audio interface to DAW for recording since ES-9 is very expensive and takes up a lot of space in the case but still good for larger case.
@karazee404

5:45 you mention not using the mult that much and wanting to swap the random source voltage. Why not swapping both for a kinks from mutable instruments? it offers a white noise source coupled to a sample and hold circuit, a logic circuit with AND and OR and a Half/Full Wave rectifier. ;)

Do you use an additional audio interface with the ES-9? Or just your laptop and the ES-9. I am looking to do something similar to you and have mostly modular drums, but then send some Ableton instruments thru the modular for fx's. Does the lack of volume on the monitor out bother you? Also, way inspired by your setup! Great stuff.
@nivenofficial
@nivenofficial 2 года назад
In this setup I'm using it as the only audio interface, in the studio I use along side my mixing desk as an aggregate device. Never really had an issues with a lack of volume on the monitor out, when I use it live this just isn't an issue, and when I use it in the studio use the desks monitor out. Glad you're enjoying man!

If you want a more capable random source, check out the Ultra Random Analog by SSF. The module is discontinued, but can be found on the used market. It has two sample and holds, and it does gated noise really well also.

Basimilus can be quite tamed with filter, thus making it usable for things besides destruction. Warps is a really tricky one. Parazites patches are quite unstable (quickly going from very quiet to way too loud). Because of that I moved it out from my live performance rack. Found myself using mostly Parasites Waveshapers. In a similar situation I'd go for a swapping Warps and that Doepfer module from upper row for Beads (aka new Clouds, aka texturise your sound), which I absolutely adore (and keep it in my perf rack).
@nivenofficial
@nivenofficial 2 года назад
Yeah I have a clouds but might grab a uclouds or a beads to go in here instead of the warps. Every now and the the warps suddenly hits a sweet spot and gives me some amazing sounds so I'm still a bit hesitant to take it out though!

Might want to switch the mult for Pico Scale. It's an attenuverter with an offset an an inverter. You can do that in maths, but you might want to use it for something else.
@nivenofficial
@nivenofficial 2 года назад
That sounds very useful! I have a mutable instruments shades (not in this case as it was to big) which I used in most patched to do the same thing.

Interesting breakdown thanks for that! I love my Dreadbox dystopia for noise and random sample and hold functionality. You may like that! Also etc aid came to mind when you asked what might be good to fit in that other space. I also love my squid and I have es-8 but you may have convinced me to switch it out for the es-9

@isweartofuckinggod
@isweartofuckinggod 2 года назад
I've been planning a similar system! Mine looks very different from yours, as it's meant to be driven by the Polyend Tracker. The case I chose is the 104hp Palette case from Intellijel, so it's quite a bit smaller as well. However it's big enough for all the modules I need! As a suggestion for that 5hp space where the mult is currently: Bastl Instruments has A TON of cool modules that would fit there, including a state variable filter, a unique bitcrusher thing, and even a granular sampler!
