When we moved east I got a shock by these guys. I was sitting by my window and heard this very loud bird. I looked out, but I only saw the little bird, but then he sang! Yikes. We call him an opera singer because of his barrel chest, named ours Pavarotti. Love your channel ❤️
Such a wonderful video! This was the bird that “chewed me out”, when I was trying to right a (seemingly) decorative birdhouse in my garden. It had fallen over, and when I tried to prop it up, the babies inside (??) started to chirp. Then the mother sat on a branch, just a few inches from my head and chewed me out! I felt so bad.
lol they did the same thing to my dog😂 he walked by where they were in a bush and they (plus all the other little birds in the bush) started absolutely screaming at him😅 he looked so confused and embarrassed!!
carolina wrens are absolutely incredible these tiny little fluffballs are always hopping around and singing so loud it's hard to think the wren makes its sound
We had a pair of Carolina Wrens nest in one of my flowerpots on my porch last year. We watched them build their nest and hatch a clutch of 5 eggs. We watched as both parents constantly fed their brood from sunup to sundown. We felt so blessed to have seen these little miracles, and are hoping they return to the same place this spring!
I am very new to birding (3 or 4 weeks because I’m a kid) and I want to find one of these cute birds. I’ve always loved animals but I just got serious about birding and photography.
If you live in the Eastern U.S. or in the Deep South, you’ll most likely spot one, or hear them sing. Start with attracting them with foods that Carolina Wrens like, like mealworms, peanuts, suet, or sunflower seeds. Or, take binoculars and something to visually record and find a park or wildlife reserve in the Carolina Wren’s range if Carolina Wrens are not in your area, and go from there. Hope you get a chance to see one and happy birding! 🐦
This little bird stole my heart with his big voice and cute upturned tail. I played a recording of their calls and they come right over to see who the heck is in their territory! So adorable and inquisitive! I love listening to their large repertoire of song! Great Video! To me it sounds like he says "Chris-to-pher, Chris-to-pher!" And "THE BIRDY, THE BIRDY, THE BIRDY-DO!!"
I do the same thing! I play bird sounds from my phone and the response is always exciting. I love the Wren. We are lucky enough to have several pairs that nest in our bird house and in other creative areas around the property.
I have been an avid birder since I was a young boy. At 63 y.o., I am still in love with our feathered friends. Carolina wren’s are at the top of my list as a favorite. They have quirky mannerisms and are amazing parents. The males are happy to entertain us with their beautiful songs, no matter the weather. I happily provide them live mealworms during their parenting periods and they are most appreciative. I have followed your channel for a few years now and I am never disappointed. Your knowledge, descriptions and love for these amazing feathered creatures come through clearly in ALL of your videos. Thank you and please continue bringing us your loving insights into our friends.. Happy Birding Lesley from one of your biggest fans!!!
I love your description of the little Carolina Wren. I think it's wonderful that you been a avid birder since a young boy. Wow the things you must have witnessed from out feathered friends. I can only imagine. The Carolina Wren is extremely likeable and it was such a fun time putting this video together. Definitley one of my top favorites. I just get such a kick out of their ways. Thank you for being a fan of my content for as long as you have. It's such a honor that these videos are liked by people like you who have long history with watching birds. Happy birding my friend. 🥰🐦
I'm so glad I watched this! Now I know what the little guys hopping around my garden are. That tea kettle call is unmistakable and I hear it every morning as my wake up call. 😊
Year before last, a Carolina Wren nested in a trunk by my house. When the nestlings fledged, all four of the chubby fledglings came to my feeder together every day!
Carolina Wrens are such lovable birds. If I could, I would want to hug and hold this bird, too. Something about these birds give me the warm fuzzies. 🥰
Carolina wrens are all over my neighborhood. They are very visible and always sing loudly for everyone to enjoy. They nested in a patio flower pot one year. Thank you for this video!
What sweet angels! My dad has a feeder out back and there are lots of red and brown House Finches. They’re precious!! My dad is in not in the best health, and recently my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Bird watching is a simple daily pleasure for them and it is a treat to see them enjoying birds and nature. Love the channel and thank you for your knowledge!
Thank you - that was so interesting! "Our" wren over here, the eurasian wren, has a very different song: blaringly loud with rolls and trills. So loud for such a little bird! In German the bird is named "Zaunkönig" which means "King of the fence".
I been living in a tent for 20 months in southern New Jersey and I'm awaken by a friendly wren singing almost daily. He's now building a nest in the midsection of a wooden pallet used like a fence around my tent. Very neat birds to watch and listen to.
What a cute, sassy & dress easy going little bird (when it comes to nesting). Love their songs, that they mate for life & both work feeding their babies. Also appreciate so much that they like insects I don’t want to see close: spiders, cockroaches, etc. Thank you for sharing this beauty with us & to those that made it possible. Wish I had them in my area! 💖
These are my favorite backyard birds! They seem to like close proximity to humans, and we have had them nest in hanging baskets on the porch, unused watering cans, atop electrical meter boxes, and in the entrance of defunct PVC drainage pipes several feet above the ground. They are quirky, chirpy, and delightful!
I have a pair nesting in my yard every year. I love to hear them sing. They are very loud and you would think the sound is coming from a much larger bird. They help keep the bug population in check year round in my yard. South eastern Virginia
The Carolina wren lives here in Missouri, and are close by all year long near the feeder, garden, wood pile, grill area…well, all over the yard and area. Nested in a gap in roof beam last year and reared young twice. Usually see them in pairs, always hunting and feeding each other. Love everything about these cuties! Thanks for the video.
I love em. I had one come in my cabin when I was there and had the door open. It flew up on a book shelf, sat there and took a little nap while I went about my business. Woke up later and casually flew back out the door. One of my favorite birds ever since. 💗
We have a husband and wife pair that have been at our house for a few years. They have been in our house more times than we can remember. We keep our doors open on nice days and they will come in as they please. We call them our landlords, because it feels like they want us to move out, so they can move in. Once they even started bringing in pine straw and started to make a nest in a bowl I had on top of our fridge. They’re very bossy but they are also our favorites.

Just love Carolina Wrens! We have an adorable pair, here in Western New York, that hang out on our deck, the shrubs around it, and our feeders. Always a joy to see them! Thanks for the great video, Lesley!😊❤️
This is one of my all time favorite birds. Along with the Bluebird and Black Capped Chickadee. These wrens have the most beautiful song I think. Just lilts through the air. Thanks for sharing this video of the adorable bird. 💗😊
I love those cute little birds! That classic Wren tail sticking up and almost a nervous twitch as they just can't sit still for a minute. They are quite vocal and I usually hear them before seeing them. ❤❤
One of my very favorite birds of all time! I'll never forget the first time I saw one -- I was totally captivated by this cinnamon colored ball of feathers with the striking white eyeliner. And then I heard him, sing!! Everytime I hear their call, I pause and look around for them. Makes me smile every single time. Thank you, Leslie!
Love the Carolina Wren. We’ve nicknamed him The Big Bopper! Been enjoying their entertaining habits for years! They are adorable and their song is a true delight!
Several years ago, we had flower pots with marigolds placed on our deck rail. A Carolina wren pair made their nest in one of the pots and successfully hatched their brood. At first after the eggs hatched, the parents would not bring food to the babies if I was out on the deck. However, after a few days, the internal signal to feed their young overrode their fear of me. They would go back and forth into the marigolds even when I was standing just a few feet away. It was a fascinating procedure to watch and they successfully fledged three young.
I used to only hear this bird when I was in Carolina. I started hearing it in the city in VA last year and wondered why. Went to country roads to see they cut most of the woodlands. It explained a lot for my particular area
Hey, I’m hearing one at night in NoVA. Im pretty certain, I think it’s a male searching for a mate. I might be completely wrong, but identified by sound
These feisty little birds are definitely one of my favorites ,they have so much character, even in the dead of winter when most birds are silent you can hear their beautiful songs.
What’s amazing to me is how a bird nest from little birds can be completely intact as it is woven together so perfectly. I love birds but I also love their fantastic engineering and building skills that they use in creating gorgeous woven nests that are lined with soft fluff.
Hey another bird thats in my top 5 is the underrated catbird. I know its not that glamorous but they have alot of personality just like the carolina wren. You never hear bird people talk about them much
I agree. Gray Catbirds are underrated but adorable birds. 🥰 I think Carolina Wrens used to be underrated, too, until quite recently. Hopefully, like the Carolina Wren, the status of the Catbird will shift over time.
Agree 💯%. They are very underrated and a super cute bird. IMO the 4 cutest birds in the northeast are Carolina Wrens, Black Capped Chickadees, Gray Catbirds, & Song Sparrows. Song Sparrows are another bird that’s really cute and have one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and are also very underrated.
These little butterballs will sing anytime of year, even in the dead of winter...attract them with mealworms, shelled sunflower seeds, suet and peanut hearts, placed on platform feeders
I was lucky enough to hear and see one in Caissie Cape, New Brunswick last year, they aren't very common in the area I live in, and i was there on vacation. The call really startled me as the bird was hidden nearby in an old thicket, very loud three part call.
Always good videos and lots of bird facts! Lesley does a wonderful job. She's an asset to RU-vid! I can now distinguish between different bird calls and recognize most. I look forward to every new vid. Great job Lesley and thanks for sharing!
We see these little darlings all the time here in Baltimore City. I am a beekeeper and the wrens are constantly eating the dead bees from around our yard...we have and endless supply of food for them.
This is my favorite bird by a looooooong shot. Such a big set or pipes in a tiny bird and oh what a song it has. We’ve had a nesting pair in the top area of our propane tank for over 40 years. Always inquisitive and investigating every nook and cranny of our home and surrounding gardens.
When I first started birding 2 years ago, I heard this adorable little bird with the big voice around my house. It took me a long time to hear him, find him, AND have my camera with me but finally got a great pic of him! Sitting on a branch, high up in a tree that was several hundred yards away. Luck was with me and the pic has him in mid-song, his mouth wide open as he declared that he owned that whole neighborhood, lol. He often makes a call that sounds like he's shouting "Pretty! Pretty! Pretty!" I always respond, Yes you're very pretty!
I love the exchange you have with the Wren singing, “Pretty, pretty, pretty” and the response you give back to the Wren. I found that to be funny and endearing. 😄😊🥰
I have a pair of Carolina wrens that have been making nests in my carport for the last three years, every spring. I've started looking forward to them every year, and even taken pictures of Mama Wren on her nest. They love to visit my firewood shed, too, now I know what they're looking for. This video is great because it's giving me ideas on how to be even more helpful for my little Wren family. I love them too!
Thank you Lesley very informative video. I like the close up view of these birds and the singing was recorded very well. A very well made video. Kudos to you and the people that helped with this. Hoping to see this wren in my area this year.
Omg my favorite. They remind me of chipmunks 😄 cutie pies. I hope my two have so many babies. Great videos. The footage of the babies is priceless 😃 thank you 🙏
Jenny Wrens, as my grandfather called them, have been a very familiar little bird to me since childhood. Always nearby, nesting in the craziest places. Scolding the cat and hopefully keeping the kids safe during that first day of "flight school." Their song always brings a smile to my face.
Thanks! Yes, they always nest in our 5th wheel hitch if we leave it uncovered for them (we are currently park hosts at Brazos Bend State Park in Texas). We currently have 3 "hitch babies." ❤️
So darned Adorable! We had a Wren stop on our balcony in Massachusetts (where as you've mentioned are just now barely starting to expand into) and belt out it's song for us, it was a great way to wake up! We would love to have them nest on said balcony but we're just as happy to have them nest in the forested area on the other side of the building where we can just hear them singing
These are my favorite backyard birds. They're so cute with their upward tails and white "eyebrow" feathers. Two years in a row we had them nest somewhere nearby and they would all come to my suet feeder in a row with the little babies hopping behind mom or dad along the top of my fence. They're a true joy.
I agree. The upright tail, curved, probing bill, and the eyebrow stripe adds to their cuteness. When they look chubby, that turns the cuteness factor up to 11. 🥰 That’s so sweet that you got to see a Wren family two years in a row. By the way, I love your profile picture. A very cute painting of a very cute bird. ☺️🐦😍
This is one of my favorite backyard birds - delightful to watch. The ones in my area aren’t shy at all…in fact, a pair made a nest in the overhang of my roof a couple of feet next to the sliding glass door on my balcony (which I open and use every day). They are mealworm addicts. 🙃
Here in the northern part of Western MA we have these noisy, but wildly beautiful wrens. I love the intricate barring patterns on their tails. A guy named Robert Stymeist came out from Boston to see our wrens many years ago because was working to document Carolina Wrens year-round in Massachusetts. Thanks for making great videos!
I live in Southern New England and have been lucky to hear their cheerful tea kettle tea kettle tea kettle outside often. I love how the tail feathers stick straight up, they are adorable!💚
This was interesting. I have a beautiful one that has nested on my back porch for the last 3 years. I leave a old clay planter pot out for them. They have used few times and a large pot of flowers last year. Had to water those plants from the bottom. I really enjoy watching those birds. My mom and I have been feeding the birds for almost 20 years now. Thank you ,keep up the good work .God bless you and yours.
I've got one I call the morning bugler, perched on my fence, blaring the wake-up-call to every living thing at the crack of dawn. No need for an alarm clock with this guy around. He does the same during the evening as if to signal days end and all's well. Tomorrows another day.
I’m so happy that you made a video of one of my favorite birds! 😀 For the first time, I saw Carolina Wrens courtship feeding this morning with suet nuggets I put out for the Eastern Bluebirds. So adorable! 🥰 I hope I get a video recording of them doing it again one of these days. Learning that they mate for life makes what I saw even more adorable! 😊 I love that they’re called “Teapot Birds”, and I loved seeing the footage of the Carolina Wren foraging through the leaf litter, and the cute Wren family at 4:56. ☺️😍 Also, it’s so cool that Carolina Wrens have an extension built to their nest that’s equivalent to a porch or ramp. Plus, I also loved seeing the Wren parents feeding the nestlings being accompanied by wholesome country music near the end. Carolina Wrens have a rugged industrious spirit to them that resembles country living. Kudos to Birds Walking Down for the awesome footage! 👍 I hope I get another chance to see a nest and a successful brood from these “Teapot Birds”. 🫖 Most, if not all Wren species in general are cute and fascinating, just like you said. Thanks for sharing, Lesley, and happy spring birding to you, too! 🐦🐤🐣🐥🌸🌱🍃
These little birds are a joy to me here in Virginia! They almost always nest on my porches, in front door wreaths and flower pots...the makes often sing Jer-e-my Jer-e-my!!!!
Yes, as some of the other commentors say, the Carolina Wren is a joy to hear sing. I remember hearing them for the first time and wondering for days which bird was making such a pretty sound. Everytime I hear them now it brings a smile.
I have always been amazed by their acrobatic abilities and how nimble they are. And yep, they are VERY nosy. I shut one in my garage last summer unknowingly. Thankfully he got out when I opened it the next day before dehydrating.
By far, my most favorite bird! I had a nesting pair several years ago. I miss them! They have not come back to nest and I even bought them a specific wren bird house! Hopefully, they will be back again. Just love their song and huge attitude… The best part about them is their adorable bodies Great video! Thanks for sharing
I can confirm these little guys are curious and are not shy. The only bird I’ve ever had to fly into our house! He was safely caught and put back outside. Little dude still came and hung out in our front door wreath for days. I think he was mad at being caught and wanted to yell at my husband after the incident 😆
Lovely! I had a relationship with a pair where I last lived, missing them! I find it really amazing how much Carolina wrens and Eastern chipmunks have co-evolved camouflage. You cannot tell those two animals apart without direct inspection. From the coloring, the tail width and posture, and how they move through underbrush. Co-evolution really blows my mind 😁 Anyway, thanks 🙋🏻♀️
Now that you mention it, the similar look of the Carolina Wrens and Chipmunks do resemble the convergent evolution seen in other species, like Hummingbirds and Hummingbird Hawk Moths. Everything from their appearance and even their behavior between Carolina Wrens and Chipmunks are almost strikingly identical.
My absolute favorite!! We just started seeing these in our yard three years ago in Western PA and they’ve been a joy ever since. They are such characters and garner a smile every day. Does it get any cuter than that nest?! I mean, come on, pure magic✨
Last summer we had our first Wren sighting on our feeding deck. It was just as the sun was starting to settle and the Wren was comfortably hanging out between the folds of our deck umbrella. He/she stayed there for close to one hour but then left for the evening. I was behind excited!
I wish I had some in my backyard! I love wrens !! But Carolina wren are more rare in my area ( Québec, Canada). VERY nice videos and lots of info, thanks 😊!!
❤ love these guys! Before we knew they were Carolina Wrens we called them crazy birds 😂 A couple built a nest in our mail box and 5 eggs. We were lucky enough to walk outside at the exact time the babies flew out of the mailbox. It was so glorious😊❤! (Dallas, TX) 👍🏽
Thank you Lesley! We have them here, they are Rascals. Always flying into the garage and shed when the doors are open. They are also known here for taking over nests built by other birds. They love their Moth meals too. They clean up the porch deck from the nightlight bugs that fall during the night. Full of energy and fun to watch. They took over the Chickadee house this year and last. Chickadees moved into the new one last week.
This was the first bird I encountered when we moved from MN to SC. Also, our state bird😊. I found this bird to be the least shy in SC. They really do like odd places to nest! I constructed slate stairs in my back garden. I see them sneak in between the step and small supportive boulders. They sing while perched on our back porch furniture. Their song is one of the loudest😁
Lesley, this is such a wonderful video. I wish you could see the wrens for yourself. They are one of my absolute favorite species, with their perkiness, prettiness, and loud voices! Until a few days ago I was putting out live mealworms for them constantly. But I’ve had to stop for two reasons: I was spending $300 a week on the worms, which my financial advisor said was cutting into my ability to not outlive my money, and I have a terribly painful left shoulder and arm, due to pressure on a nerve from frozen tense shoulder muscles. I cannot drive or work with feeders until that gets solved! But spring is about here, the yellow-rumped warblers have just migrated north, and the birds are eating the nesting mix cylinders (with dried mealworms) in my two caged feeders. I’m going to subscribe to the Birds Walking Down page now!
Oh my gosh, wow I never realized how expensive mealworms could get. Speedy recovery to you with the arm and shoulder. 😞 thanks a lot for checking the video and for subscribing to birds walking down. Appreciate it a bunch. You're right about what you said of the Carolina wren. Such lively birds. I love them 🐦🥰
Love these cuties! I used to live in Georgia and loved watching them dart around the forest floor. Their song just echos around as well. They can sing so loud for how tiny they are!
My backyard spread has attracted a very fine Carolina Wren. They have a fun song and the cutest cocked tail. He was foraging and happily snatched a cricket.
I love the wrens. They nest in my backyard every spring and summer. They are tiny yet extremely territorial. They will break other birds eggs and throw other birds chicks out of their nests. They do not like competition. Nice video, thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
Bless! I Adore these diminutive birds! Such Big personalities. They are a constant companion in my yard, and they attempt to next in my hanging baskets on my porch every Spring.
I'm glad I found this ! I have these cute little speed merchants all around my property. I've opened my front door and seen them just staring back at me through the storm door on the front door stoop. They are very entertaining to watch and listen too. Their singing is quite distinctive as per this video. Their presence make me happy !
I am a long time bird lover and this little wren has been one of my favorites. I live in a rural area but not woodsy. I do have many trees on the property and 2 acres of pasture, but I've only seen one pair of Carolina wrens. I'd love to see more. Thank you for the great video.
Hi Lesley 🐦 I do have both the House and Carolina Wrens. I have the House Wren return every year to one of my hanging wren houses. It is nearby my window, so I can keep an eye out to get a glimpse of them. I see them mostly when gathering their little twigs. So cute to watch these little guys at work! Thanks for sharing your great content! 💗
Here in Texas we are fortunate/blessed to have only these, and not the house wrens found further north. Carolinas seem to CRAVE human company, and offer song, antics, and bug control and ask only for protection for their young. Please be aware that the newly hatched fledglings can only hop about on the ground, and need protection from house cats. They love meal worms, both fresh and dried. Thank you for the excellent video!
Carolina Wrens are my favorite common bird here in Maryland (followed by Red Winged Blackbirds). I never get tired of watching them rummage around on my balcony, and I love all the noises they make. The males sing surprisingly loud for their size. One year, they built a nest in my bike pouch, but they never laid eggs in it.
I love these little buggers! We live in middle Tennessee and you have described these guys perfectly. They're not shy. If I leave the shed door open and unattended for more than a couple minutes, at least one of them will be inside and exploring before I get back. They are just adorable!
Thank you so much for this video. I was so excited when you announced it would be on today. Over the years my mom has sent me photos of this little bird and asked me to tell her the name of it. I just shared this video with her and I'm sure she will be thrilled as I was!
One showed up at my platform sunflower feeder in Central VT. This year, we've seen two together. Thx for the info! The audio caught my cat's attention!!
Such a wonderful video! I love these little wrens, they frequent my feeders and have built their nests in our upside down kayaks hanging under our deck and on my front porch in little bird houses and this year in an old pickling crock. They are a joy to watch, and such feisty little cuties. The male sings every morning on our back deck and it sounds so adorable. We are in Massachusetts and they have been around here for many years.
They are one of my favorite birds. I have a bamboo windchime on my porch with a bird house and in the winter it stays in the house to get out of the cold. Every morning I am greeted with the prettiest song singing. Your channel is wonderful.
My Carolina Wrens in Tennessee are adorable and never far from our carport where generations have nested for 30 years. Sometimes they nest on a shelf in a box, on a hanging ladder, or inside a plastic Halloween pumpkin. The male sings LOUDLY in the front yard then flies to the backyard and sings again. So cheerful! They clean every spider egg off my window screens, and one ate a small ringneck snake my son left outside in a jar one day, LOL. Love them so much!
The Carolina Wren is my favorite. I have a pair. I grow meal worms for them. They make me happy with their energetic ways. They also get along with my mockingbirds who also come for mealworms.
In Central North Carolina the Carolina Wren is plentiful. The first one I saw sang on my front porch and I was two rooms away but I swear he was saying "come and see who I am." I looked all over to find out what kind of bird this was. I was never sure, thinking it was a red-eyed vireo until finally I got it right! They seem to like what my property has to offer.... space to fly in and lots of places to land and nest. Their multi-whistle call can also be heard all around town.
We get a lot of these in Georgia. I call them “Peanut Butter Birds” for their coloring and love of bark butter. Gotta keep the garage closed during nesting time or they will try to build a nest in there!
Every year a pair nests in my garage!..I look forward to it each year. I leave a window opened slightly so even when our garage is shut they go in and out with easy. They are one of my favorite backyard birds!! And their song is wonderful
