This is so well timed. I just turned on RU-vid and our little wren is singing its heart out right outside of the window! They are so cute. Thank you for another great video!
Our landlord wrens check for moths every morning under our planter boxes. They find so many- I don’t know how the moths aren’t extinct. We call them landlords because they will barge in our house every time we leave the door open for more than 30 minutes. Checking our air filters, I guess.
My local pair have been scouting around my house for likely nesting spots, and I often hear their duet song as well as the rest of the male's repertoire. I love these feisty little birds, and always enjoy the chance to see their antics up close. Thank you for this video highlighting one of my favorites!
I have fallen in love with a Wren, which has been named Wrenfro, that comes to our glass door and "crickets" at us for peanuts... after he gets it, he gives a chatter on the way out, which I interpret as a "Thank you"... he has brought his family recently too!
Just yesterday, we had five chicks leave the nest that the parents set up in our messy shed. The parents were helping the chicks get to some nearby trees. It was so cool to watch and listen to their different calls! One chick wasn't quite ready to fly and had trouble getting out before dark so I put the nest in a box and put the bird in the nest (using gloves) and it slept safely over night. In the morning, as soon as I went outside, the parents were on my porch ready to help their chick. They got it to follow them on the ground and they would find bugs and feed it. Eventually, the rest of the chicks came over and the whole family of wrens went along hunting for food. The little chick was already getting stronger and getting close to flying. Success!
I'm in central Michigan, and last week when it was unseasonably warm, I'm 99% sure I saw a Bluebird sitting on a birdhouse along my drive home from work! This birdhouse is always where I see my first Bluebird of the year. Then when I got home, we had a Red-Winged Blackbird feeding on the ground under our feeders! I couldn't believe it! Haven't seen either one since, I hope they're ok... it's been pretty cold here this week, but spring is coming soon! Edit: We've seen the red winged blackbird a couple more times, and today, the first Robin! Yay!
I adore wrens in general, they are small onIy in size, but mighty in their own minds. We have one living out front and out back 😂 They yell at each other every morning, and then yell at my young aduIt son and l aII day. 🤣🤣👍 Sometimes I get scolded if I just look out the window pane in the door at them. Then if I go outside, it wiII sit a few feet away and continue the lecture 🤣👏 My son bought me the birdhouse the one out back lives in. It just got done yelling at him for working on the car lol
In Nebraska had House Wrens, now in FL have these rascals. So loud, inquisitive and funny flitting about and live the suet. I'm delighted to have new wren type to observe. Male/female duet chatter is sweet. If you imitate the calls they come right over to check it out 😂 Thanks for all your videos. Oh! And just started having a Catbird visiting the suet
How wonderful is that! You are so lucky. I'd have the time of my life watching Carolina Wrens if they were in my area. They are definitely a favorite bird of mine. 🥰Really awesome about you getting Catbirds too, they are very cool 😎
@@LesleytheBirdNerd And - I was all about missing my sweet little black capped chickadees but we have Carolina chickadees!! Not quite as bold as the northern ones but just as fun 😊 Great horned owls and Osprey too 😁 I learn so much from your videos and share them with my sis - thanks again
I rarely hear most of these 'warning calls', since the Redwing Blackbirds take it upon themselves to warn *everyone* within range of 100 yards whenever I show up.😄
I live where there are a lot of Carolina wrens, and I adore them! It amazes me how far their songs can carry. I don’t get to see them close up like in these Birds Walking Down videos, though. I appreciate the information about the different calls and songs. They are amazing creatures! They make me very happy! Thanks, Lesley!
It is amazing how far their voice carry, amazing birds. I'm so glad you enjoyed the beautiful close ups Birds Walking Down has of them. Have a wonderful evening
I only have a pair in the country of east central Arkansas.Great little birds 2 watch and listen 2.Wish I had more but got lots of other great birds, many which have been in your videos.Another great video.
The first time I followed a loud birdsong I was VERY surprised to see the small little package it came in too!! 🤣😂🤣 But now thanks to you I know I've been mainly hearing the males! ANY time my cats stroll through my yardc& getbto close to their nest ... scolding starts loud, strong, & "scary" (except to my cats) now I know THATS the male also & all this time I thought it was the Mama!! LOL Here in Florida's panhandle we have LOTS n LOTS of Carolina wrens. Our Mockingbirds imitate them sometimes 🤣😂🤣 I love learning from you!! 🥰🥰
I hear ya! It's amazing to see the culprit behind such a loud voice. Too funny about your cat upsetting them. I think Carolina Wrens have the biggest personality of all the small birds and they really don't care how little they are, haha! With the scolding calls it could be the female as well. The only calls the females don't make are the Cheer calls and they don't sing the tea kettle song. I hope that helps :) Have a wonderful evening.
I'm pretty sure I've thought I was hearing cardinals before, too, when I'd hear that loud, beautiful song, but try as I might, I just couldn't spot that splash of bright red. Now I know why.
Hi, Lesley. I love your content. I've been watching for a while. I meet a lot of the same winged friends you've made wonderful videos about. Just wanted to say hello. Have a blessed, cozy day.
Hi, thank you for the very nice comment 🙂 It is wonderful about you getting to see many of the birds I make videos about. You have a blessed, cozy day as well 🤗🐦
One day I heard a beautiful song with so many changes and tracked it down. I was in the house and found a little Carolina wren sitting on a table I had by my bedroom window, which was open. It stopped for a few seconds when it saw me looking and then continued singing. I lay on the bed and listened to his amazing song for a long time and then his mate actually came up to him and they flew off. We were over the road truckers at the time. They lived in our carport for several years until we came home and I found part of his body. He had given his life to defend a fallen young. I cried.
Thanks for sharing!! I am hoping to see Carolina Wrens in the spring! Haven't seen any in at least a couple of months. They are such precious little birds
Oh my gosh Sonja, I have always wondered if they actually enjoy singing, because to me it sure seems like birds are having a fun time while in the act. Makes so much sense. How wonderful is that? They feel good while singing and we feel good hearing them. Love it!
They are so beautiful I start listening them once spring started...they have the cutest melodies..well its hard listening tho when its 5:30am and you're still sleepy lmao 🤣💛🪶
@@LesleytheBirdNerd yeah I was like I need to know what bird is it. I love bird watching and identifying them is essential and amazing when you finally know. Thanks for this video. ✌🏼
I love having the Carolina Wrens in my yard... I might try to make a couple houses for them to help them in the winter... They're always hopping around the underneath of my shed... Hello to all of you from Fall River, Massachusetts! 👋
I do love these little birds! A Male Carolina Wren was scoping out my garage as I came home from shopping yesterday morning, singing at the top of his lungs. I had to hurry up and shut the door, so he wouldn't get in there and get stuck with no way out. Then he was looking at the eaves of the deck, he had a mission to build a home.
I really enjoyed this video - especially liked that part on the duet sounds of the male and female Carolina Wrens. We've had several reported the past few years hear in the Ottawa area and I was fortunate enough to see one a few years ago. Such an interesting little bird and impressive volume as well! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome, Neil! I'm so glad you enjoyed the duet part. Pretty neat how the female does that, it's cute! You're lucky that they have been in your area. I hope you get to see one this Spring or at least hear them. Have a great Sunday Evening. 😊🐦
4:06 Wow 🤩 Thank you Lesley I finally have the chance to meet the birdie that makes this sound in the morning around my house I always tought it was a Texas mocking bird but it’s this tiny cute 🥰 Gracias for sharing I don’t see that on animal planet 😝 lol keep up the great work!!! Saludos!!!👋😊👋you have a great day now!!!😊
A Carolina Wren in my yard sang a song I've never heard before, today. Even Merlin Bird ID didn't get it right... but it was definitely a Carolina! Guess he must be a trend-setter songbird!
It could be a young bird that either didn't have enough male tutors to learn form so it instead learned songs from other species, or it could be a young bird that is still in the process of getting it right :)
I live in a Carolina Wren's territory. He never lets me forget it. Sometimes he'll start scolding, and, when I look around for a cat, fox, or hawk, it's just me ; D
The most entertaining thing about a Carolina Wren is their affinity for alternative nesting sites. These birds will make a nest out of ANYTHING. If you leave your convertible top down, a wren will have a nest in your cupholders on your lunch break. Love these crazy birds!
Yes they will, even in old bees nests. 😂 They're fearless for such little cuties. They scold us all the time lol. I love it. I had been telling my young aduIt son about them, he had gotten me a small bird house for mother's day and wrens claimed it. I was telling him how they scold me when I go outside. So one day I heard one outside and got a message from him. He was working on the car and one came right up to him a few feet away and sat there giving him the business 😂 He said I think I just met your birds mom, the ones from the bird house he got for them. 😅
@@metalmamasue3680 that's too cute! We were forbidden from using our door at night all winter because 2 wrens decided our Christmas wreath was the best roosting spot. Didn't have the heart to take the wreath down until they moved on to nest season!
One of my favorites! I started watching this and my indoor cat came running up the hall looking for the wren. He kept looking at the window where the tree is where these guys hang out and tease him!
Wow, what a huge variety of they have! It must have taken a heck of a lot of intense observation to determine which calls belong to the male and which to the female. Lovely video and commentary. 😊
What a wonderful song they have. I have definitely heard that song now I know who it is. I think one visited my feeder this winter, I never saw it again but certainly looked like a Carolina Wren. Thank you for another informative video 😊
Lol, I was literally just telling a friend about the little wrens in our yard and what a big voice they have for such a tiny little frame... How serendipitous!
I love Carolina Wrens! And really enjoyed you putting this video together, Lesley! I have a pair that do the duet quite often, and since they’re very close to where I’m watching them, I get a nice close-up show!😊❤️
Adore these wee birds! We live in southwestern Pa., and we've had a sweet little guy I call "Cinnamon" coming to our feeders for a few years now. Just this week we noticed he's got a girlfriend. 😊 So cute. Love their pretty, pretty songs!
I heard a Carolina Wren in New Jersey that sounded like "CompaNYYYY compaNYYYY compaNYYYY". A very aggressive male lives somewhere near my daughter's backyard in the DC suburbs.
I like your description of the song. And that makes me laugh at the little wren being aggressive, don't they realize how small they are? haha! I don't think they do. Thank you for the nice comment, have a great evening!
Years ago my rather young little brother heard one of these singing what sounded like his name and exclaimed "It's saying Jeremy!" He passed away a couple years ago, as a strong young man of 24. The following spring a pair of his childhood 'Jeremy Birds' nested in a flower pot on my parents' front porch, and another pair nested in my outdoor workshop.
I'm sorry for the loss of your brother. What a beautiful message to you and your parents from the wrens. ❤ I have also always thought they were saying "Jeremy." :)
They are awesome, and onIy smaII in size. They are mighty in their own minds 😂. We have one out back and out front, they yell at each other every morning, and then us humans the rest of the day. ❤ 🤣👍 Some of my favorites for sure.
I just love wrens. We've had them nest in our yard several times. I find they are opportunistic nesters. Once, a house wren made a nest in a hanging planter. Once I discovered this, I was very careful in watering the plant. The way I found out was while I was watering with a milk jug, the mom ended up in the jug...which startled me and I threw the jug into the yard.....followed by the thought of how I was going to raise tiny wrens! Mom was fine and after the babies fledged, I removed the nest only to discover that the mom had added a piece of plastic to the bottom of the nest!
Such beautiful music! I loved listening to the males songs when I lived in New Jersey! I’ve since moved to southwest Florida, and no longer hear them. Thank you for such a wonderful presentation!❤️
What a great video! The Carolina Wren just might be my favorite bird. They just have so much personality! I've had the same family of Carolina Wrens nesting in my garage (3 door garage, with the door always open because it's busted) for over 20 years now. What's so funny to me is that they always pick a different place to nest in. One year it was an old metal mailbox, that was just laying there, discarded in a corner. Another year they nested in my grandparents old freezer, because the door was left open. They even nested in my Dad's old baseball glove from the 1950's. Great video, Lesley! BirdsWalkingDown takes the absolute BEST footage of birds on youtube, hands down, so thank you too, sir!
Really enjoyed watching and listening to these amazing little birds. The Carolina Wren is one of my favorite birds…Thanks for your always informative videos…
It's mid December 2023, after 6pm and dark. My husband opened the front door and Carolina wren that was resting on Christmas wreath flew into our house!! Couldn't catch birdie, who flew into a bedroom where it spent the night/closed doors. Next day, Sunday, in bedroom, birdie is perched on curtain rod Sleeeping with poops on lace curtain. I tried to catch with netted laundry bag to no avail!! Birdie is too quick! I'm sweating and took a break. Came back later and birdie is perched on picture frame. Birdie had fun in bedroom...things fallen on floor. Birdie has spent all day in bedroom, with no food/water. Finally flew on the pillow. I approached slowly with netted laundry bag on one side and my husband was on the other side with snuggy. I approached slowly and told husband to make noise and movement so I can catch birdie. It worked!! I put the netted laundry bag over birdie on the pillow and cornered birdie. I got birdie in net with palm and walked downstairs to front door and went outside to give birdie freedom! It didn't fly but hopped into our garden. I told my husband to use garage door instead of front door during evenings. The past two days have been exhausting for birdie and us, but birdie is now free!!!
Okay, I finished the vid before making my previous comment. Now that I have watched the rest, here is my own take on the male's call of, "Tea kettle, tea kettle, tea kettle". What I hear is, "I'm right here, I'm right here, I'm right here", followed by, "C'mon babe, c'mon babe, c'mon babe," followed by, "I'm a stud, I'm a stud, I'm a stud." But, I have to mention that I'm not an ornithologist or anything, so I might be wrong on my mnemonics theory. Hey, my dad was a bio-chemist, so that almost makes me a scientist by association.
Carolina Wren, hat is a pretty call song. I am use to house wrens, trying to coax the young out of nesting. Hear the Carolina Wrens sound before , but did not know that it was the Carolina Wren. My sister lives in NC THANK YOU AGAIN
I still am trying to figure out which bird sing Thank You, with the Thank a down ward sound and You going up…if that makes sense. But I have a feeling it a Robin or Cardinal. Still, if anyone knows, let us know. Love your videos! Thanks You!
I've heard some of these calls before and wondered which bird was singing - next time I'll know. Thanks! (And I love your indignation on the part of the female wrens!)
It's a bit amusing how the males in the video seemed to prefer facing the forest while singing, like they're in front of an audience of adoring fans. Who knows, maybe they are? 🤷♂️😄
I came to the realization when having birds (and local birds) is that there are dog-birds and cat-birds. - Birds calling out are just like the neighborhood dogs barking or growling in their territory - and checking if anybody responds. - Birds calling out are just like the neighborhood cats meowing or screaming in their territory - and checking if anybody responds.
The Pavarotti of the woods. ;-) Some time ago, I read in an online article that the part of the brain where birds' singing abilities are located shrinks and increases with the seasons. When the days get longer, the number of neurons increases (if I remember it correctly).
love the carolina wren.. such a nice little bird... though, sometimes annoying when they are making that high call right under your window at 6 am in the morning.
Interesting that only the male sings and about learning songs. They are quite fun to watch and the only songbird that seems to know my patio is a good place to look for bugs. My only problem with them is how brutal they are to bluebird nests.
When I worked at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle WA hebhad a family of Wrens make a nest in the goat barn and we watched it all year. It was incredible.
I wake to these cuties every morning. I see them in my yard all the time in southern, coastal SC. I’ve had a hermit thrush hanging out under my feeder all winter. He mostly stands there and just looks around.
