Could this be the definitive version of this classic song penned by Leon Russell? The Carpenters and Donny Hathaway both had great versions...but this almost sounds like it was written for Ray.
This version is beautiful. There is one which Ray Charles performs this song with Leon and Willie Nelson. Leon Russell was one of the most amazing musicians and songwriters that blessed this world.
Thank you, Leon Russell, for giving the world this song. And thank you, Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway for imagining it in ways that touch, enter and live deep down in my heart. And, my heavens, may you ALL R.I.P. forever.
+Reggie Ward took the words right from my mouth. the ability to "own" a piece, a rare gift indeed. Luther had it, and the real mark is when the original writer or artist tributes your version. Dionne Warwrick thought Luther walked on water with what, 3 of her remakes? Everybody in the industry felt Ray walked on water. probably HOPED he would do one of their songs.
Thank you for this classic song this is song it's so beautiful, it goes right through your soul all through your body I wish they made more beautiful songs like this now God bless everybody stay safe pray show kindness in this crazy world we're in peace out 🦋😊👍🎶🙏🙏🙏
Ray Charles is the ultimate version. Donny Hathaway a close second. Leon Russell created this masterpiece and sang it in his own way as only a songwriter who penned this song, can do. So I listen to each one and hear the different layers each artist brings to the song. Kodi has done a very close version to Donny Hathaway's version. Michael Buble' brought in his jazz element. How anyone can dislike Ray Charles's version, I have no idea.
I just gotta listen to Leon and this song from time to time. It saddens me and I miss all the musicians who've passed. Had to wipe some tears. I loved these people.
I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhymes I've acted out my life in stages With ten thousand people watching But we're alone now And I'm singing this song to you I know your image of me is what I hoped to be I treated you unkindly But darling can't you see There's no one more important to me Baby can't you see through me? 'Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you You taught me precious secrets Of a true love You wanted nothing You came out in front When I was hiding But now I'm so much better And if my words don't come together Listen to the melody 'Cause my love is in there hiding I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone And I was singing this song to you I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone and I was singing this song to you We were alone And I was singing this song to you We were alone and I was singing this song Singing this song to you
I grew up listening to the great Mr. Ray Charles. I'll be 64 in May and live in Tennessee. My mom loved his voice and his music. She taught my sisters and I to love all music. RIP Mr. Charles.
Donny’s version depended on a blues feel in the chords and voicings whereas Ray’s emotional palette with the tasteful piano and orchestra is orders of magnitude wider. Donny also flubbed the lyrics, saying, “I’m singing this song TO you.,” rather than FOR you. “FOR you” as Ray sings it conveys a much stronger message. Donny is a very great singer, but in mining this song he missed the vein of gold. Ray tapped into it directly.
@Brian Shelton You are 100% CORRECT! Ray’s rendition is the BEST! Donny Hathaway’s is good, but Ray’s flows so much smoother. Maybe it’s because of his piano, I’m not sure. You people that disagree with Brian and me, go back and listen to Donny’s. Then come back here to Ray’s version, and you’ll hear exactly what I’m talking about. Don’t get me wrong, Donny’s is very good, but Ray is just smooth, no breaks in the music. It flows so perfectly. If you don’t agree then, we’ll just agree to disagree. We surely won’t argue over such a BEAUTIFUL SONG ABOUT LOVE! Many BLESSINGS TO ALL. 4:03
I agree with Chuck Brown. I always associated this song with Ray. It took all these years and a bit of research to learn it was written by Leon Russell. Makes sense, though. But Ray Charles sincerely owns the song. Hauntingly beautiful.....
That's because youre another crazy Hungarian like me. The strings do me in. I seen Ray Charles backstage in the 60s in Cleveland with the Raylettes. I think he aged like a fine wine. THE BEST!
The one, the only.... nobody wrapped his soul around a song quite like Ray Charles. And this classic was made for his unique style, because when Mr. Charles sang, he always made you feel like he was "singing this song for you."
@@Denzel_Watchington , well, to be honest, obviously more than you..lol I sense animosity from the beginning? 🤔 seems you're almost hurt because it's not a "black man who wrote this awesome song"..?? I was simply correcting your mistake, also btw, my grandmother loved leon Russell, that's how I knew..
Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.
I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhyme I've acted out my life in stages With ten thousand people watching But we're alone now and I'm singin' this song for you I know your image of me is what I hope to be, baby I've treated you unkindly but girl can't you see There's no one more important to me So darling can't you please see through me 'cause we're alone now and I'm singin' my song for you You taught me precious secrets of the truth, withholdin' nothin' You came out in front and I was hiding But now I'm so much better so if my words don't come together Listen to the melody cause my love's in there hiding I love you in a place where there's no space or time I love you for my life, 'cause you're a friend of mine And when my life is over, remember when we were together We were alone and I was singin' my song for you I love you in a place where there's no space or time I've loved you for my life, yes, you're a friend of mine And when my life is over, remember when we were together We were alone and I was singin' my song for you, yes We were alone and I was singin' this song for you, baby We were alone and I was singin' my song, Singin' my song, singin' my song, singin' my song Singin' my song
The first time I heard this song I cried like a new born baby. This is a beautiful song. I want this song play at my life celebration. The going home to be with my mom and dad
My brother & I had the privilege to see Ray Charles perform live in Australia 2003, 1 year before his death....he was amazing. Before my brother died by suicide some years later, he sent his wife a text to say "I will met you in a place, where there is no space and time". Whenever I hear this most poignant version by Ray Charles, I think of my beautiful music loving brother and the many concerts I'm sure he has seen in heaven. Ray Charles would have been at the top of his list ♥♥♥
Your comment Mr Brown about this being the definitive version of this classic is on point. This was the genius of Ray Charles at his best emotional poignant and soulful
I remember the first time I heard this - I was driving in a car with a crappy radio and tinny speakers. And despite that, I remember that by the end of the song I could feel the hair on the back of my neck sticking up and had goosebumps on my arms - such an incredible performance. He really made this song his own.
I love every version of this song I’ve ever heard; and each performer - Leon, Donny Hathaway, Willie Nelson, and Brother Ray - has made it their own, in their own unique ways.
One of my favorite songs of all time. As far as I'm concerned it's Leon Russell's greatest composition. It's perfect in every way and as Ray Charles always did, he made it his own. He and his piano were one instrument and it's sensational to watch.
So my son is getting married next month and wants to have a mother son dance, and I suggested A Song for You by the Master Leon Russell, and he said its pretty emotional. Yes it is. Then I suggested Queen of the Roller Derby! Didn't go over well, but damn I fell in love with Leon from that song lol. Rip Master Leon!!!!!!!
For this listener this is definitive in that I feel it could not be done better. The album it is from is called True Genius which other than this and a couple of tracks isn't all that great. Way back then I bought the cd just for this track alone. For some reason the eighties and soul never worked but this ballad sung by Ray is beyond sublime.
Music is a force that flows among us all. The amazingly talented people who create it, who perform it, wouldn't exist if all of us didn't feel it and embrace it. The fact is that we are all connected by it in one way or another. The artist creates freely and independently and then is forced into dealing with another realm of reality called - success! My take on this is this - if Leon Russell wasn't a musical genus and didn't write this song after suffering a heartbreak and if Ray Charles didn't exist at all - we all would have never experienced this incredible moment in time....
