Karen sang like she was speaking to you personally. Her timbre and perfect pitch grabbed your emotions, and wouldn't let you loose. It was a strange concoction of honesty, humility, bliss, melancholy, and ecstasy. She made you feel like you were finally home to stay.
What elequent description this is for Karen Carpenters' Voice. Perfectly guided by Richard Carpenters' flawless composing and arranging the romantic music, together so timeless and soulful. Timeless
I always stray away for a while, then she pops up in my feed again, I click once more to straight away feeling the breath slow way way down, almost to a stand still... for i am being called back home into heaven...
Karen has a voice of an angel! I don't care how high Mariah Carey can hit a note or how powerful Celine Dion sounds or how soulful Adele or Christina Aguilera can sing or even Whitney Houston's sweet voice .....Karen Carpenter still touches my heart when I hear her sing. Her voice is like butter ....smooth & creamy! And absolute perfection! It's distinct & incomparable to anyone else's & she'll always be remembered for it! She's a beautiful treasure & always will be! :)
+Cathy Luning You are so very right...anytime I hear her sing, her voice just makes me stop doing whatever it is I may be doing and just sit quietly and listen to her soothing voice...her voice just softly and indelibly touches your soul...it will forever
+Cathy Luning I agree with most of what you said except that Eva Cassidy is on a par with Karen in her effortlessness. Both very talented ladies taken far too soon in my opinion. Karen gave us alto's the voice to aspire to.
+Maureen Mahoney Maureen no offense to your statement but no one is on a par with Karen, 33 years after her death and her music touches people like no other, KC inspired so many of today's' singers, a list too long to name them all, she is in a class by herself.
Me, too! I can never forget hearing "Top of the World" on the radio after my parents split up in 1973. A decade later I cried my eyes out when Karen died. 40 years on, I don't know who could ever surpass her.
This is a prime example of singing a song minus unnecessary vocal gymnastics. Just straight pure tones and emotions. Still one of the Top 10 best female singers of all-time for me.
I really do miss hearing her, and now, at 77. Her voice is even more loving, and haunting. No other voice is as recognizable as Karen. One day...all of us will again be hearing her sing...IN PERSON.
Well said! Karen was "The Voice" -- and a voice for the ages -- but Richard was and is an extraordinary musician. His instincts about what would make a great record were true in 1970, and are still true now. Anyone who thinks that "timeless" is a useless word should listen to the early songs of The Carpenters. They were a brother and sister whose talents deserve to echo throughout the universe a thousand years from now.
Not to mention song choice. This is a cover, as many great Carpenters recordings were, in this case of a Leon Russell song. Richard found inspiration in such unlikely places: for instance Goodbye To Love started as just a title referred to in an old Bing Ctosby movie Richard saw on TV, and We've Only Just Begun was written by Paul Williams for a bank commercial, which also was seen on TV by Richard...
All these years later, I still get tears in my eyes when she sings "And when my life is over, remember when we were together", just thinking what she went through. RIP you angel.
I know. It makes so many of her songs haunting. This one especially...because it is like her last song to us, and what we would say to her, too, if we could. 💔 Imagine if it had been played at her funeral. 😭
What an Angel. She's had perfect pitch and was an amazing drummer. She loved drumming more than anything and now she finally gets the recognition but way to late. I wish she knew how special she is was.
Her voice! There's a humanity to it, a relatability, an earthiness, I just appreciate. So warm and resonant. And her vocal constancy up and down her range is something else. She doesn't just hit the notes, rather she embraces them!
39years ago today karen passed away. It’s hard to remember that. But she left us beautiful voice.Thank you for singing for us.Don't worry karen, we'll never forget you. Rest in peace.
Or the space and time we lived in.... Precious times... Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school California....I grew up waving to Richard and Karen driving through the neighborhood where I grew up! We'd be outside on our bicycles!
I almost couldn't hold it together when my kids told me they wanted to meet her after listening to this song in the car. Folks in heaven are real lucky having her there.
lol, love your message.... melancholy sweeps over me each time I listen to Karen sing. Her haunting voice. It is for this reason I can't play her whole album ... she would have reduced me to a total wreckage by the end of the album.
Karen Carpenter's voice was a divine instrument, ethereal and pure, capable of lifting the soul to heights beyond the physical realm. Her angelic melodies touched hearts and souls around the world, leaving a legacy of beauty and inspiration that will endure for generations to come.
She looks beautiful here. Great performance. She always does justice to every song she sings. I'm glad that we have those three classics from Leon Russell to Karen performed
My god what a breathtaking sight of beauty and grace! That hair, that dress, that voice, that face! It just breaks my fucking heart that she isn't here today! 💔😭
Her voice literally brings tears to my eyes.. it touches something deep inside it is so soulful such a rich sultry beautiful voice.. there's not a voice I've ever heard before her or since her that equals her
The combination of Karen's voice and this haunting song would've been immortal under any circumstances; after what happened to Karen, this song became one of the most beautiful, sad, wonderful performances of all time.
@@sulupee And if you see her here, she just looks like a normal woman. She is not "fat." And then if you see the 1977/1978 Christmas Specials...she is just way too thin. Breaks my heart. Easily one of the most amazing singers, ever.
Love how she goes from high to low in this song! Her heart is on total display during this performance! There's a degree of sadness too as she sings "and when my life is over". Not knowing that she wouldn't live very long. All in all, there's something about this song that hits you deep down inside unlike any other song that Karen ever sang!
Karen was the best female singer I ever heard, she could sing any style of music and it will come out great. She was so beautiful both inside and outside, we lost a beautiful person. Heaven knows I loved her.
She couldn't sing opera. She wouldn't be able to sing many Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston or Lady Gaga songs in the way that they did. Anyway, Karen is unique and great at the type of songs she sings which are mostly ballads.
No she didn't have the high pitch of a Whitney or Mariah but they didn't (or don't) have the quality of voice Karen had. I don't listen to Lady Gaga but from what I have heard of her she is no match for Karen.
@@ChildOfThe1970s Whitney Houston had a great set of pipes, but she didn't know what to do with them. Ditto for Mariah Carey. Karen Carpenter had very good pipes, and an exquisite understanding of how to sing. Similarly, people also used to say, "So-and-so has better pipes than Sinatra," and yet no one knew how to put over a song like he did.
No doubt Whitney had glorious pipes, but seemed unhappy with her arrangements. Over hundreds of performances she'd sung, I never heard her sing the same song the same way twice & not EVER like her Studio Versions. Something struck me as questionable with that? 😳
Karen has sweetest and most beautiful voice ever. She gave me chills here, esp when singing the lower notes. Hands down, the best female singer of all time.
I wish I appreciated her when the Carpenters were on the top of the charts... Instead I was listening to Woodstock n the like.... Now that I'm older I'm stunned I could have been so cavalier about her music ... She is simply one of the best!!
Karen Carpenter!! How could we have been so privileged to witness the finest female singer of all time and then have her taken from us just after 32 short years? The legend lives on in her recorded history!! What a sweet, deep, emotion filled vocalist!!
Was thinking...there are Cher impersonators, Dolly impersonators, Elvis impersonators, Beatles impersonators and every other impersonator! ...but NO one can do Karen. She is just utterly unique.
This woman sounds as if she saw you across a crowded room and she wanted to get to know you better so she poured her heart out to you with her music. This lady was a beautiful person inside and out. I was 9 and a half years old when she passed away. I am almost 48 years old now. Her music still embraces me after all these years. She was really great. I think that her music and her memories will live on forever
There's a lot of covers of this classic song from Leon Russell, but Karen's/The Carpenter's is one of my very favorite. Her voice just takes it to another level of emotion for me.
I think that's the definitive version of "A Song For You". Karen seemed totally at ease with Leon Russell's material. It's a very difficult song to sing - many highs and lows - but it just... flows in her voice.
Richard holds her up there well. He's playing is just perfectly suited to her vocals. I will always love her low tones more than her highs in vocal range. Just so so beautifully orchestrated. I think her voice is the best in musical history, certainly of her generation. Always missed always loved.💝💔⚘
What an INCREDIBLE turn around to go with Karen's INCREDIBLE VOICE, and "I love you in a place where there's no space or time" I could listen to this a million times and not get tired !!!
Karen Carpenter one ☝️ of the greatest female singing 🎤 voices of all time, timeless, perfection, with true feeling, smooth as silk, from the rich low timbre to her higher notes🎶 ONE-OF-A-KIND. I feel the soulful melancholy of her beautiful voice ❤️
Just about the perfect song and arrangement for Karen ; but then she took every song 2 a level unsurpassed. She had such a pure voice . There was such emotion in there. Whenever I hear her sing any song, she still moves me . My favourite ever singer and one , if not , the greatest female singer ever. She died 2 young just over 35 years ago. Miss her every day.
Amen love this wonderful voice… reading the book “Little girl blue” The Life of Karen Carpenter, for the second time. It’s a very intimate book & anyone that loves her should read it. The greatest female voice ever, she doesn’t even have to try to sing … Love you Karen, I was 15 yrs. Old when Close to you came out. I said “who is that?” Been following her ever since. RIP dear sister🙏🏼😘also my granddaughter was born February 4, 2021, the date she passed Feb. 4 1983. That’s the first thing I thought of when she was born. 🙂Beautiful voice
I never realized how Superstar & A Song For You complimented each other. Superstar is from the fan's point of view while A Song for You is from the star's point of view.
+Kevin Riley Never thought of it like that. Isn't _"Superstar"_ about a groupie though who still waits for the the artist she slept with to comeback (which they never do).
