Oh, also Anglesey, is an island just off Wales where the Romans pushed the Druids of Wales, the priests of the old religion, it became a place of magic, and feared...The Isle of Faces maybe?
I don't actually know anything about Anglesey, I'll have to look into it. But the idea tracks with how George world builds for sure, it wouldn't surprise me if this were an influence of his.
A little more info for you, since the fact that the Tudors were Welsh, not English and is often ignored. Henry the VII wore a dragon as his sigual, not a rose, the rose was Lancastrian (English). Henry viewed himself as the Y Mab Darogan (prophesied or destined child), of Welsh myth. There is so much more in Welsh mythology that lines up with ASOIAF, that is often looked over. The Welsh are Y Ddraig Goch, it's on our flag. Wiki the Welsh Dragon, Mab Darogan and the Mabinogion, for stories of early Welsh myths based on early oral tales of Dragons, magic, many born out of the Roman/Saxon/Viking/English invasions and attempts to destroy the old religion. Oh, that was the red Welsh dragon/Y Ddraig Goch, the Cymraeg flag, not the english Dragon.
I definitely had to make some choices as to where to cut off relevant tangents like the Tudor line being Welsh, Henry VII Tudor's French connection and time there, and a million other things. I don't know when or if I'm making the correct decisions in these cases but including everything that was interesting or connected in some way would make my videos several hours long. I appreciate you bringing it up though, people can get good information like this from the comments. Welsh/Celtic/Gaelic mythology and mysticism are fascinating, and so is the history. Whales specifically does not get the respect that Scotland does as a distinct culture with its own history, language and traditions.
@iisotter8944 Isn't Henry VII's Welsh ancestor the one that caused a scandal by marrying Catherine of Valois without the regents' permission after Henry V died? (Or rather, Catherine caused it marrying him, since she was higher rank and had to ask him, yeah?) Owen/Owain? He was her clerk of the closet and, um, park steward? Or taste-tester??? There was some slight of hand making everyone think Catherine was carrying on with a Beaufort so no one'd see the match coming? It seems like a love match given the risk involved... I wish US schools taught more world history in general, but especially more about the North Atlantic Archipelago outside of England, and I'm really curious about the parallels in ASOIAF. Thanks for the search starters!
It sounds like you know the history a lot better than I do! I do love history but when I’m trying to keep up with George drawing from history from every corner of the world I can’t dig into the specifics as much as I’d like, especially when there are more videos on other topics to make. But if someone better versed in history than me made a video, I’m sure a lot of people who watched this video would be interested!
I do plan on having a livestream where i discuss characters and places I left out for the sake of run time at some point. But for now, new video coming out today on the Iron Islands!
I’m only a couple minutes in, but I can already tell this is a banger! I wanted to recommend The White Queen and The White Princess, two shows (altho basically the same show) by HBO, which are based on the actual war of the roses! It’s not 100% accurate, as they do have some minor witch-magic stuff, but otherwise it is very historically accurate! Since it’s HBO, there are a LOT of actors from GoT, which is also pretty hilarious!
I’m definitely going to watch it! I’ve been very busy with getting this out, and I’ve got a Patreon video on King Arthur along with a RU-vid video about the Iron Islands I’ve been busy with but from what I can see that show looks really good!
@@theHeroWithaThousandVoices Awesome!! Perhaps watching them can give some inspiration for another video, who knows 😄 Great video btw, I’m already looking forward to the next one!
Hello from david's channel! I actually didn't know a lot of the (recent) historical events that went into the inspiration for this, other than loosely knowing about the War of the Roses. All of the stuff about the Baratheons being rose kings was so interesting! Can't wait to see more videos :)
Great video, sir. Instantly hit that subscribe button. Comparative literature is my favorite academic approach to literary consumption and review. The algorithm dropped you in my feed, and I can see why. Thanks, algorithm! 😅 There is also a secondary meaning/reference in the name Pendragon, whether intentional or coincidental, one of the non Welsh uses of "pen" sees it meaning last or second to last in a series. For example, penultimate. This has been suggested as applying to Uther/Arthur in two ways. Firstly that since Arthur was a bastard, Uther was the last Dragon. Conversely, it can be used to say that Arthur, despite legitimacy, is truly the last dragon. Does Courtney Penrose have an heir? Biologically or symbolically? Edric Storm, perhaps as his symbolic heir, will become the Last Rose King, sort of how show Gendry was legitimized. Implications and applications of this possibility, ehh, who knows?
Greatly appreciated! And I'm glad you brought the Arthurian stuff up. Cortnay Penrose does not have an heir, and it's part of why he's so vehement in his defense of Edric Storm (a bastard). Not only that but in addition to the Arthurian reference, house Penrose is a reference to one of George's favorite historical authors, Sharon Kay Penman, whose works he's recommended (specifically her work on the War of the Roses). It sounds like you're very interested in the Arthur stuff, so I'll just let you know that my very first patreon video is actually all about Arthurian lore in a Song of Ice and Fire, coming out next week! I'm constantly finding myself having to cut out Arthurian mythos out of my essays because the tangents would be too long and off topic, so I decided it was time to get to work on Arthur, already a favorite of mine.
Glad you liked it! I have an Iron Islands video coming out in the next couple weeks here and a King Arthur in a Song of Ice and Fire video already up on Patreon. I'm also appearing tomorrow on livestream on David Lightbringer's channel. I'll also be doing similar content outside of a Song of Ice and fire soon!
I’m glad you like it! More videos coming out before House of the Dragon is done with King Arthur in ASOIAF on Patreon and a big RU-vid video on the Iron Islands.
@@b0baf00t8 Well said. It’s a big reason I never criticize the delay on Winds of Winter, I trust him to write with this care and depth and would not have that kind of art rushed.
@@herowithathousandvoices yeah no sports car needed. You’ve found your new calling. I laughed and I actually almost cried when you read Ned and Lyanna at the Tower of Joy.
Followed you over from LmL’s Aftermath livestream, great start! Those tangents into other flower symbolism in ASoIaF? I bet we’d watch that video series, especially if they came with funny voices… I’m both embarrassed and relieved it took me ‘til this video to realize that Jon’s sweet scent is more direct underworld symbolism than just funerary flowers, what with decay often ~literally~ smelling sickly-sweet. GRRM does love his physical realities. So, uh, thanks for prompting… that. O_o Anywhoozles, looking forward to your second vid & joining Patreon next pay day. Congrats & good luck with the channel launch!
The sickly sweet is definitely a thing! I didn’t get into it but I call it the converse of Garth Greenhand, Garth Gangrene Hand. As far as other flowers, Valyrians are named after a heliotrope flower called Valerians. Then there’s more connection with that to heliotrope stones, bloodstone specifically. That’s one example, there’s a lot more depth there, and a lot of other examples but you get the idea. At some point I may come back to the subject but I have a bunch of other episodes lined up for now!
Ahaha Garth Gangrene Hand, ye gods... Okay, that's really neat! I'd caught the Valyrian/Valerian, but the only stones I know are the shiny math rocks that go click-clack. Guess I'll have to go dig (tho' if it leads to a similarly consumptive hyperfixation, I'll consider spamming your comments feed with the trivia justice served). Awesome that you'v already got a line-up, curious to see it unfold!
You're correct, modern German dorn is thorn. Looking back I did not explain this well, but the translation of dorn that means fist is from modern Gaelic and historic Scottish Gaelic as well as some dialects of Celtic and Welsh. Mistakes you make when you're trying to rush out your first video in time to promote it with an appearance on a bigger channel!
Off topic, going back to David's stream this morning.. I referenced the Devil & left hand & you said you spoke about Peter Pan on your Patreon... is it all tied in to asoiaf... and why don't you do a video on RU-vid about it? I think Peter Pan ties into asoiaf massively and I haven't seen anyone really pick up on him, let alone talk about the parallels between the two. Do a video on Peter Pan, it'll be awesome!!! 💋
My Peter Pan video on Patreon isn't directly tied to ASOIAF, no. I just hadn't seen any analysis on the story that I liked, and there is a whole lot of depth to the story I wanted to talk about. I could do a Peter Pan video on RU-vid at some point, but at the moment I have promised to finish the Iron Islands series, and get out videos on Dune and Lord of the Rings. Feel free to bully me about Peter Pan though, I love the story and have no problem coming back to it for another video once I've gotten some backlog out of the way!
I wouldn’t say I see a lot of direct parallels, but they are drawing on A LOT of the same things. Morningstar mythology is central to the symbolism of both, so are green men, and fae folklore. Neverland is named for the babies stolen by fairies, the neverborn, and that was the original name George used in his manuscript to tell his editor about the Asoiaf series he planned to write. I don’t want to spoil my own video, but I would be shocked if George hadn’t read Peter Pan, and whether it’s a direct reference or not they’re both doing extremely similar symbolism.
@@herowithathousandvoices And that is why you should do the Peter Pan video! There is lots more when you start looking into it. Shadows & the Shadow Thief... plays into Shadow Puppets etc... I think Peter Pan should be your priority now, forget everything else!
You think I can get more subscribers on the inside? I tried to pronounce it in a way that it sounded like its influence Alasdor, but I can understand wanting it pronounced more like "Allister".
I was tempted to last night when I was rewatching the aftermath. I watched it afterwards (and had also watched the HOTD EP) and was so tired. Now I'm back for a fresh second listen.
@@herowithathousandvoices Any reading will be lovely with that voice, but do you want to put your viewers to sleep? Perhaps that would work well in a podcast format?
I will definitely be doing some work in podcast format. What and how that works remains to be seen, but my end decision is definitely going to be something I base on what my subscribers like so I appreciate your feedback here. This goes for your other comment where we’re having a similar conversation haha.
That is the Lucy bear and she is gentle and sweet. The doggo at the end is Summer and she is a chaos monster but I love her too. I have no problem putting the puppers in my life in my videos.
Yeah... the fuzzy chaos monsters definitely have ways of getting into your heart. Well, hello from the interwebz, Lucy and Summer! Wishing you many headpats and treatos for entertaining insomniac humans and their fiendish feline overlords (or feathery familiars or scaly sidekicks, etc, as other cases may be).
@@leslieshE It's an allusion to the dichotomy of responses of fictional characters to homosexuality set in a world that is misogynistic and dominated by male primogeniture. Perhaps if you watch the video (again?), you might gain better understanding on GRRMs use of the heart in conflict with itself.
@@leslieshE Because Margaery is a teenager and Robert is a horny, gross, hedonistic, selfish dbag. I also don't like how she's passed down the line from Robert, to Renly, to Joffrey, to Tommen. It is absolutely the culture, but we can take time out to recognize that Mace Tyrell treats his daughter like livestock. I realize the timing of that gif could be interpreted a couple ways, I want to be clear it wasn't about Renly's homosexuality. Nothing wrong with that, live your truth!
@@herowithathousandvoices Thank you for clarifying, I thought it was about Renly and Loras. No, I understand why Robert and Margaery would be messed up.
