The Dance Of The Dragons started off well for Alicent Hightower's Green faction, but thing quickly went wrong after the battle by the lakeshore known as the fish feed. The loss caused Ser Criston Cole to leave Harrenhal and set of towards the Hightower army to the south, but all that waited for Ser Criston was his fate at the butchers ball, one of the legendary battles of westeros and an event that is likely to happen in season 3 of house of the dragon.

The Dance Of The Dragons will be the focus of the plot of the new HBO spin-off House Of The Dragon coming in 2022. So if you want to learn the story before we see HBO's take on it then this will be a very long-running series. Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen was trapped on Dragonstone by her brother King Aegon ii with no way to escape her fate. What was to come was the final showdown between the two main players of the dance of the dragons and bring the war into its final phase. The House of the dragon was crumbling and the events that was about to follow would only cause more damage to both sides of the war.

He should've accepted the fact that the riverlords and winter wolves wanted to do battle and prepare his men for honorable deaths. But the moment he drew his sword he killed all of his men at that moment because they didn't have time to prepare or forge a defense. And if he was so honorable he would've never slept with the Princess when she made a move on him

This ending will be fitting for his show counterpart. In the tourney, he attacked Daemon from the back when Daemon wasn't looking, that alone showed his real nature. He then proceeded to not properly train Rhaenyra's children. What did Harwin Strong say? "This is what you teach Cole? Cruelty " and Crispin said something about there are no rules in a real war. Welp, that bit him right in the ass. Crispin was no way near being an honorable knight and he didn't deserve an honorable death.

@@kaartierWhile I do agree with you to an extent, the fight wasn't over yet, and Daemon lost because of his own arrogance. That's why the Golden Rule of prizefighting is "Protect Yourself At All Times". Daemon did not do that, and he turned his back on an opponent who hadn't been incapacitated or forced a yield out of. As an experienced veteran Knight and tourney participant, Daemon should have known better. So while I don't necessarily like the way Criston won, and I definitely don't like Criston himself, it's Daemon's own fault that he lost the way he did, and Criston can't really be faulted for taking advantage of the situation the way he did either.

And if were to knock an opponent down without knocking him out, or otherwise incapacitating him, or making him yield/tap, and the ref hasn't stepped in to stop the fight, and I turn my back on him and start celebrating to the crowd, my opponent has every right to take advantage of my very foolish mistake. "It Ain't Over Unit Its Over," and, "Protect Yourself At All Times," are the two most important phrases anyone can learn when it comes to fighting, whether it's a prizefight, a streetfight, knights in tournament, soldiers on battlefield, it doesn't matter. Daemon fucked up and I can't hate on Criston for doing what he did. There is plenty of much more legitimate reasons to hate Criston Cole.

I love the dance because it shows both sides were capable of committing atrocities and has blurred lines of which side was properly in the right. The butchers ball is a great example is this, Cole tried to save his men by surrendering then when it was refused offered a 3 on 1 combat before being shot to death under a peace banner, an actual war crime. All this coming from the side that is more often considered being in the right of it. It’s a complex and messy story and I’m still so happy they chose it as the first spinoff show. It’s a good one to bounce back from after that catastrophic s7-8

Cole at this point had committed many atrocities, had his own share of war crimes. This wasn't even a war crime, but justice. And the Blacks were in the right of it, since Rhaenryra was the ACTUAL HEIR to the throne. It's not that complex.

Cole had no chance against Lionslayer and Roddy . He would've d*ed regardless. The way i see it, they viewed him as a dishonorable man (he was) so they didn't want to grant him the death of a fighter. I may be wrong but i think thats the reasoning behind that decision . A) you're underestimating how powerful the Hightowers and Lannisters were when put together B) a LOT of their forces were concentrated around the westerlands and crownlands, while Rhaenyra's were more dispersed C) they did hold the support of lots of minor houses, both who supported them on their own volition as well as those who followed the big ones D) they had Vhagar, which made many of the ones close to their points of command wary of antagonizing them, which even if they did not go for the Greens, helped keep them neutral

The Greens had the Lannisters and *all* their houses, the Hightowers and their vassals (said to be as powerful as a great house) + the Baratheons and *all* their houses. It's implied that every Northern vassal house not named was neutral (hence why so many of them specifically are named) and the Riverlands was split. The Iron Islands is poor with low manpower. The greens likely had more houses in actuality although it's not clear but they definitely had the houses with the largest populous in terms of smallfolk, most money and largest armies.

Probably one of the dumbest battles of the war on either side. Cole's force is about half the size of the Riverlords and largely made up of Crownlanders; he offers to surrender, which would give the Blacks the opportunity to take a valuable prisoner in Criston Cole and either execute him as a traitor in KL, or try to ransom him. A lot of the Crownlanders in his army had probably already changed sides once, and would have swelled the size of Rhaenyra's forces. Instead they choose to fight an unnecessary battle and incur more casualties for no other reason than their commanders are bloodthirsty. Then we've got Criston Cole deciding to march from Harrenhal and through the Reach in order to get to Ormund's army, when he could have marched west and sought the aid of the Lannisters, or at least entered the Reach from the north.

This battle actually reminds me of Dracula's campaign against the ottomans, the guerrilla tactics, scorched earth, the amount of brutality and so on. I think this massacre was a message to all the queen's enemies: there will be no mercy for traitors. Fear is a effective tool too. Numbers are not everything.

You take every man you can, esp. when your Northern allies are sitting at home with their thumbs up their asses. The books have a much different interpretation of him, hope we get to see his more competent side in Season 2 I've been told that Criston Cole was "the best and the worst of the Kingsguard", said by Jamie in the books. His feats are rather impressive Overall, it begs the question, if Cole did fight all three of the Lords, I wonder if he would've won 🤔 low-key, there must've been a small part inside of the Lords of the Trident that didn't want to take the chance of Cole winning.

I have a feeling because the hotd book being from the historian Pov of maester who could be influenced by house hightower since the citadel is in their realm it probably paints green loyalist better than what they were and black in a worse light. at least that's my theory. I think the show is viewed as what actually happened at least that's what grrm has stated at least i remember him saying that but i know he has said the hotd book could be unreliable source since it was written after the war and from 2nd or 3rd hand accounts

If everybody is incompetent and relying solely on Aemond and Vhagar the war would have been over in months. Also Cole has been showed to be on par with Daemon and Aemond in melee so in the show it shouldnt be that much different.
