Tracing lineage based on matrilineal ancestry does not make a society matriarchal. The ancient Egyptians used to do it and they were pretty tribal in their patriarchy. That's why pharaohs used to marry their sisters. Otherwise their nephews bore by their sisters would have inherited the throne. Some Native American tribes in the Caribbean used a matrilineal system as well but the chiefs wouldn't marry their sisters. They'd just allow their nephews to assume chiefdom and their children would become high ranked warriors. Matrilineal ancestry is just a much more reliable method of tracing lineage since nobody can't fake giving birth to a child as opposed to claiming fatherhood without DNA evidence in ancient times.

an indian muslim migrant in barcelona gave me the simplest excuse for only men being able to have multiple wives but women not being able to have multiple husbands: how to tell which husband is the father of any born child of a marriage with multiple husbands and one wife? I was aftually stunned at the simplicity of the answer... later, i read about (if i recall correctly) tibetan matriarchical societies settling the matter thus: firstborn is the child of the first husband, second child of the second husband and so on....

Neon Markov But who could lead it? The houses are bonded to Lysa by honor and everyone makes fun about the pseudo arryns left who are just merchants. They could kill baelish. And then? Putting Lysa in a cell saying she is crazy? Okay but who will look after the heir Robin? The houses would start to fight over him.

@badjokemaker3051
@badjokemaker3051 8 лет назад
A civil war where any side Needs the throne to enforce new Claims. Arryn stands for old andal Tradition and Baelish is someone Robert and Joffrey trusted. So who could think he had a Chance of winning. Why would they decide on a new leader. Littlefinger showed how to Play them. Without Robin no peace. Without marrying him with some daughter no new dynasty. Or you would have to use Harry the Heir. All of that is pretty risky just to be pissed of about Lysa marrying Littlefinger.
@NicholasGeschke
@NicholasGeschke 9 лет назад
I have to hand it to you Preston, I am truly impressed. Few have paid such attention to detail, especially such seemingly insignificant details. Though I believe Baelish's obsession with Harrenhal is simply because it's a prestigious keep that has been the seat of Kings. Moreover, I believe the actual castle itself is worthless, but the lands it is built on are rich in resources. I believe that if he were to exploit this source of wealth, Baelish could very well undo the economic crisis he created. Make things so bad, when he took over it would look like he fixed it.

Nice video and theory! One thing is wrong though: Littlefinger didn´t save Ned´s life when Jaime attacked him. He rode off to get the goldcloakes but when they arrived everything was already over. Jaime told his guards to kill Ned´s men but to do him no harm, to teach Ned a lesson. Trying to defend his men he fell over with his horse and broke his leg (and killed like 5 Lannister men, which is nice).
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin 9 лет назад
Its just that Ned was left bleeding to death in the mud. Littlefinger didn't need to save him. He could have easily let him die and let war between the Lannister and Starks rage.
@ProkRock
@ProkRock 9 лет назад
He really wasn´t bleeding to death. His leg was terribly broken, yes. That kind of injury untreated could lead to death, yes. But he was found holding the body of Jory Cassel, so he was still conscious and able to do so. The goldcloakes eventually took him to Maester Pycelle but to say Littlefinger saved his life would be exaggerated. I think there were enough people in King´s Landing that could have taken Ned Stark, one of the most important and powerful Lords in Westeros, to a Maester... Littlefinger just happened to be the first one. Also it is stated that Ned isn´t thankful in any way but disgusted that Baelish rode off so quickly so I don´t think his actions were a big deal.

Its just that the bone was sticking out of his leg. Now, sure, maybe a random would have found him, but it seemed pretty grim to me. Maybe a random person would have found him anyway. Hard to say. Ice and Fire medical advances are bit crazy. Vargo Hoat dies from a bite to the ear, but Ned survives a massively broken leg. Oh well. :)
@ProkRock
@ProkRock 9 лет назад
Preston Jacobs I guess it´s all about the treatment you receive. Any wound can get infected very fast but biting wounds are super nasty because of the mouth´s bacteria. Legend says there once was a viking leader who beheaded his fierce enemy on the battle field. To show off his victory he took the head by the hair and violently swung it around. The dead man´s teeth however hit the victor´s leg and he died shortly after because of a nasty infection. The fact that anyone can die so easily makes it so fascinating for me when someone like Doran or Littlefinger actually makes plans that can take decades to succeed. All it takes is one little bite and everything is ruined :P

You know I was just thinking... if I had to pick any two castles to use during a war based on their defensive abilities I'd pick the two littlefinger has associated himself with. The eyrie and harrenhall. Harrenhall needs a little work but he has the money to do it. And theyre pretty close in proximity and not far from the river the bravosi would use. He would split westeros, seperating his enemies enough they couldnt help one another. And have an open supply route from essos. The irony is there are dragons coming.
@filthywishdragon
@filthywishdragon 9 лет назад
He could stop the south from interfering with Sansa reclaiming the north. If she did, he could wash over southern westeros easily if the golden company and dorne weren't there. And if for some reason Dany and Co landed in the north he would be surrounded by valyrians and dornishmen. Talk about serious speculation. . Haha

I honestly didn't notice even half and it's so fascinating to consider given how GRRM isn't shy about weaving in mysticism and myth into this series. One detail cought my eye while watching this video: The song about the maidens and their hair reminded me of the queens (or possible queens to be) in the series. For example the girl with sunlight in her hair reminds me of Cersei (or Myrcella), then there is Sansa with sunset in her hair, moonlight got me thinking of Dany. We don't know the lyrics of the spring verse but only black and brown hair remains. And when I think of brown hair and flowers, I have to think of Margaery (and Lyanna). I like how Myrcella, Sansa, Dany and Margaery are candidates for the younger queen of Cerseis prophecy. Now I really want to know the whole song :)
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin 9 лет назад
I do think you're right - then refering to different women. The maid of winter sounds like an Other to me. But, I can see Littlefinger's interpretation making Sansa it for all of them.

Preston Jacobs This song is so interesting in so many ways. I like how the seasons are connected not only to hair colors but also to the times of day. Summer, blonde, midday. Autumn, red, evening. Winter, white, night. An Other was also my first thought on the maid of winter. Winter, white and night are all connected to the Others. I'm really curious what the spring verse is. It could very well be "with flowers in her hair" but it also could be something refering to the light at dawn. Winter/night/Others vs. spring/dawn/lightbringer... I think for Littlefinger the girl with flowers in her hair is Jenny of Oldstones and the song he has in mind is Jenny's song. He even played this game with Cat as you mentioned in the video.

A note on Jon Arryn’s squire: special attention is paid to his armor in the tourney. The question was raised of who could have paid for it. I think the most fitting interpretation is that it was intentionally crafted to be defective, and the mountain was made aware of this. It all points towards Cersei imo.

Who would tell Lysa Arryn no to a marriage to Littlefinger? How about her lords whose support she needs to rule the Vale? Its certain that marrying a man as common as Baelish would incite major controversy and dissension among Lysa's subjects at a time when her own reign is receiving greater criticism due to her eccentric behavior.
@claudinhaonha
@claudinhaonha 8 лет назад
+Ramon Suarez Actually she is not the ruler of the Vale. Robin is the ruler of the Vale, she is acting a Lord Protector until her son becomes of age. Much like how Cersei rules for Tommen. So, yeah, she can marry whoever she wants.

Great video. To add to your points on why little finger wanted Harrenhal he needed it to reach a high enough status to marry Lysa to prevent the lords of the Vale from objecting to the match and rising up in rebellion. If he is the right status then they have no lawful right to oppose him and Little Finger gets access to sweet Robert without causing bloodshed within the Vale. This then consequently means the Vales forces are not harm and he can use them for what ever he is planning.
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin

Maybe, but the Vale lords used Harrelhal against Littlefinger. They said he wasn't of the Vale and should leave. Of course, Little is of the Vale, but Harrenhal somehow made him a Riverlander.
@sorsocksfake
@sorsocksfake 9 лет назад
Preston Jacobs Just consider it in the light of Davos. The nobles hate him because everyone knows he's an upstart from Flea Bottom. He's leagues below them on the pecking order, and suddenly Stannis elevates him above them. Likewise for Littlefinger: he's the lowest of the Vale's nobility, and everyone knows it. But Lysa elevates him to the highest of all the lords, and of course he then takes power over her. The same thing: the "higher" nobles can't stand that. Claims in Westeros aren't about having the best claim. It's about giving legitimacy to a de facto situation. Robert Baratheon had a terrible claim, but a terrible claim is infinitely better than no claim at all. Without the claim, rebellions would be very likely. Same is true for Littlefinger. He had no claim to Lordship of the Vale. But as Lord of the Trident, his station is high enough. The Lords Regent now cannot just dismiss him or rebel outright. Much as they know all too well that he's way below them, and try justifying a coup by saying his claim is foreign, their case now is severely weakened... and LF is able to anticipate and cut off that move before they've even started. ======== But sure, other seats would serve, why Harrenhal? Well for one, it's easy to obtain. The Whents have power left, Slynt was removed. LF knows a bargain when he sees one. More so, it's no coincidence that so much centers on Harrenhal. Even if it is a ruin, its strategic value remains unchanged, as Tywin recognized: it's the lock between the North, Vale, Riverlands and Crownlands. This will give LF the perfect base of operations for when he starts using an army. And of course, there's Oswell "Kettleblack" who no doubt has some personal interests in it. ======== But any mythology and symbols etc... as far as I can tell, that holds no meaning to Littlefinger. The only value in it to him is as "trappings of power", or just his sense of humor I'd guess, along with useful half-truths. Though of course it may at times be foreshadowing.

I'm seriously waiting for you to pull a 180 in the finale and say something along the lines of "Quaithe AKA Ashara Dayne (who I personally believe she is) is influencing or just simply controlling his thoughts and actions via a glass candle and everything he is is doing is because of her influence, though he did originally begin the planning after his defeat in the duel with Brandon Stark. She just kind of gave him the helping hand when things would change, like she does with Dany. Why do this? To screw the Realm up in preparation for the return of Dany and her dragons. She wants her in Westeros, which is currently in a state of chaos because of Littlefinger, and anyone who would oppose her is gone-Starks, Lannisters, Tullys, Baratheons are barely there... all that's left are the Vale (who is under the command of her man Baelish), the Tyrells who are too concerned with getting Cersei kicked out to be worried with Petyr's affairs, and the Martells, who Quaithe knows will side with Dany because of mutual interests in a Targaryen ruler. This is just my theory, but it does make sense seeing as how Quaithe could control anyone and anything. :P

Its tough to say who "visited" Cat and who "visited" Jaime. Bloodraven? Quaithe? Marwyn? Someone else? Littlefinger? Are they working for Littlefinger or against?
@manband20
@manband20 9 лет назад
True, very true. I'd like to think it's either Quaithe or Marwyn because of their glass candles. But whether they are with Littlefinger or not, I'm not sure. It would be nice if in the next 2 books they talked about it, but I understand if George can't or never thinks about it.
@JLittleBass

It is pretty far out and awesome that Quaithe and/or Marwin might actually be the ones controlling everything! Preston, how about a video on the possibility that they're all living inside a giant's eye, as referenced in the conversation between Robb and Bran?

How does being the Lady of Harrenhal make you Lady of the Riverlands. Riverrun is the ruling seat of the Riverlands at the time of the books.

Not after the Tully's joined the Starks in rebellion. Joffrey made Petyr the Lord of Harrenhal and Lord of the Trident (Lord of the Riverlands) after the Battle of Blackwater. Becoming the Lady of Harrenhal would therefore make you Lady of the Trident as it is now the hereditary seat.

mpalfadel2008 if the westeros history videos are to be believed, harrenhalls wood was made from weirwood meaning he either got in from the isle, or transported it all the way from the north. also, harrenhall was made besides the gods eye, which is the biggest lake in westeros south of the neck. and castles and cities have to be built near or around sources of water.

saligari666 Yes I agree. Littlefinger is very pragmatic, Harrenhal is the largest castle was near impregnable from land attacks before it was burned by dragon fire, likewise the Eyrie is near impossible to take with an army due to the many layers of defences going up the mountain. Clearly Littlefinger is getting himself secure, easily defended castles for some reason (perhaps to secure himself from attacks from Braavos when the Iron Bank tries to reclaim its debts). He has also secured himself some claim to the Riverlands (in name), the Vale (until Robin comes of age) and the North (by hopefully marrying Sansa, thought to be the only remaining Stark thus heir to the North).

Riddler can you stop already with your head torture of nonfactual BS (You are the worse theorist of anything ever). Once again Little Finger didn't save Ned Stark life, he was trying to get Ned killed by Jamie to start the war between the Starks and Lannister when he realize that Ned was heading back to Winterfell and was going to be no more of use to him (just like after Ned declare Stannis the rightful king, he had to go). How else did Jamie know that the honorable Ned Stark was within a brothel house after being secretly brought there. The fact is Jamie decide not to kill Ned Stark on his own will, because it wouldn't have been clean and will have came across dishonorable.
@kennethtor7677
@kennethtor7677 9 лет назад
Now let go to Ser Hugh BS who Ned stark receive clues about from maester Pycelle, Ser Barristan Selmy then Varys after Hugh death. Little Finger never told Ned Stark anything about Ser Hugh, cause that could of lead back to him or Lysa. That why Little Finger was the 1 who got him killed by the Mountain before Ned could question him.
@kennethtor7677
@kennethtor7677 9 лет назад
Now finally the red hair spill that you went on is a bunch of straight nonsense and I don't have enough time on this planet to debunk all that BS. But I can say that trying to connect red hair to Little Finger planning around the Wildlings (a people he know nothing about or even have a reason to care about them or their tradition), is straight dragon shit.

It's really tough to tease out which of these parallels are plot-related and which are simply literary devices that Martin is using to evoke imagery to help the reader connect far-flung dots. I don't think that all of these tea leaves are meant to tell the future of the plot, but really appreciate your pointing out when and where images and themes repeat themselves in the narrative.
