German here: high German might come from higher ground, but there are many mountainranges. But the high in this sense is more a "how it is written in the books". Platt Deutsch is more a old and regional thing. My grandparents come from villages 5km apart, they speak different kinds of low German. But they also were punished in their youth for speaking low German. It's not a dialect. Around Hannover is the "highest" German. It's the standard. Dutch is very similar, the most standard Dutch is spoken around the middle of the country. All of it is low lands ;)
I think Daemon feels shitty about his wife and on the way kid dying. It's not even a matter of guilt, just weighs on the soul. And Daemon is not really emotionally mature enough to handle any of that.
I love Preston, but the mercy kill is bullshit. Watch back the episode, Aemond is a mile away from Aegon and before Criston calls out he's already lowering the sword, putting it into his hilt. What we're seeing is Aemond finding his brother alive. The sword is out because Aemond isn't stupid and he knows there might be enemy soldiers around so he's being cautious. If that downward movement was what Aemond intended to use to stab Aegon he would need his arm to be at least 7 metres long. Aemond doesn't move after Cole calls out to him and we see a zoom out from where Aegon is. Sunfyre is curled around Aegon and Aemond isn't even standing at Sunfyre's neck. Aemond did try to kill Aegon when he had plausible deniability, Meleys, but wasn't there to mercy kill, as far as the evidence we have shows. Honestly, I don't even think he was trying to kill Aegon earlier, I just think he values defeating enemies over aiding allies, which the show is telling us backfires by harming your allies, the inverse of Rhaenyra being kind to Mysaria, which then saves her life.
Isn't it cos Aemond wants all the glory from the battle that he attacks Aegon? Maybe he wants to be king as well. I'm sure they'll get into this next episode.
Does anyone find it ridiculous that a big ass dragon like vhagar can get away with ambushing a dragon that’s faster. Surely you can hear something as big as that coming at for from a mile away. With Luke it made a little more sense since there was a lot of fog but even that required a suspension of disbelief since again you would hear her coming. Especially since Luke’s dragon and Rhenys dragons were so much faster.
"I dont know how anyone can justify [the supreme court immunity ruling]" - Well just read the opinions then! Cos it's obvious you have imbibed fake news about them. They didnt rule a president has immunity to do whatever they want. They didnt set a radical new precedent, the court would have made the same decision in the 1800s. Presidents have always had very strong powers. Every president since Truman had the unilateral power to nuke DC if they wanted to. You say the supreme court has too much "unelected" power, but you want to give unelected prosecutors (or at least, partisan state prosecutors) the power to imprison the elected president! Trump has 100 different legitimate reasons he could imprison Biden, for example violating the Taylor Force Act - the ruling gives a lot of protection to Biden from that. The supreme court are actually preventing America turning into a banana republic! If Biden assassinates Trump, he is immune from an unelected criminal prosecution, but he will certainly be impeached by the elected congress, and then he can be criminally prosecuted. The president's staff that he would need to do it for him, all swear an oath to the constitution. If they get an illegal order they are obligated to defy it, and none of them are immune from criminal prosecution. It's the same way it has always been and it's even more the case in other countries. The British prime minister has even more power, they could imprison all of the opposition without a pretense of a justification, and no court could stop them so long as they had the backing of parliament. If Biden tried to do that, the courts would prevent it, but he also wouldnt be criminally prosecuted for it before being impeached, and that is a good thing.
People who have alternate accounts they actually use to downvote other people instead of for something like work or because they needed it for some legit reason I can’t think of atm are real life troll people. Such a disgusting, garbage thing to do. What makes you feel so important you think you should get more than one “vote”
It’s possible Rhaenys went with Baelon to get revenge on the people who killed her father. The histories say Baelon went by himself but it makes sense the historians would down play any role a woman especially a semi young princess who was the daughter to a beloved Prince and heir. She also could’ve accompanied The Sea Snake on one of his adventures etc
If Aemond let Aegon die everyone in the know about the original plan (maybe just Cole but he still has quite a bit of influence) would be suspicious of him for not coming to the signal or to his brothers aid. Burning him like that lets him say that he was trying to save him. Also Vhagar sneaking up on Arrax makes sense in a storm, but there is no way that Rhaenys, who has only 1 possible threat to her, should ever lose sight of Vhagar with nothing else in the sky. And even if she did why fly into the one area he could possibly hide from you in. Its not like its a dogfight between 2 fighter jets Vhagar is MASSIVE!
I agree with your take that he is more interested in world building. I’m reading the third book and geez… too much Exposition!!! And the story is just slow!!! It drags!! It’s frustrating…
Wonder if the elections in the UK and France gives us some hope. Maybe the pendulum will swing left in the US soon. Question is will it happen in 2024 or are we too far gone… Really wish the Dems would’ve chosen a better candidate.
Anyone who thinks America should be about everyone respecting everyone else's opinions even to the point of respecting the opinions of Nazis reeeeaaaally needs to read up on Karl Popper and the Paradox of Tolerance.
Hi Preston. I’m just curious how would you feel about Vhagar being the reason for Aemond’s shift in behavior towards Aegon? The bond between a warg and direwolf is intimate to the point the warg can lose themselves to the beast. Wouldn’t that be the same case for the Targaryens and their dragons? We’ve seen before Aemond cannot complete control Vhagar. She was probably thinking “you woke the dragon to k*ll my kin so feel my wrath”.
Kinda suprised PJ didnt know what high german is.... didnt he live in Germany? I still dont think he got it, Hugh German is from southern germany (high as in where the alps are) as opposed to Low German form the north German plain, For some reason high german was considered more prestigious and Standard german borrows more Heavily from it. so definitely NOT Hanover. i thought Alice Rivers had an Irish. btw Rose Leslie is scottish but she was doing a northern English accent on the show, same as Jon Snow and Eddard and robb stark. Really no clue why the other kids didnt have the accent, but accents have always been a mess in this show.
German uses both ways of saying High German btw. High German Dialect is the dialects from the south of Germany, which has the Alps so it's high up. Low German Dialect (also Plattdeutsch) is spoken in the north. Also, the region of northwestern Germany + Netherlands + Flanders is called the Low Countries in English. There is also Standardhochdeutsch (Standard High German) which is the "officially correct" German, it's the spelling rules you learn in school and it's what national news broadcasts etc. speak in.
Maybe the maester would know valerian but why would the other ones on the small council would know a ancient language that holds no familial or pratical ties to a foreign language?
I can’t be the only one who noticed that the blood of these dragons melts people like acid, but in GOT the dragon blood was just blood?? Huge mis-step there…
"Princess Rhaenys made no attempt to flee. With a glad cry and a crack of her whip, she turned Maleys toward the foe" She was not suicidal but a Dragon Rider, a Targaryen born of fire and blood. She would not retreat. Yes she was bold and she died for it. How many others in battles have been bold and died for it? A lot!!!!
It was not mercy killing, Aemond was going to straight up kill him if Cole hadn't arrived. Mercy killing implies the person killing thinks they're justified because of the suffering, has some feelings about killing the person or the person. Aemond just wants Aegon dead, and has since Season 1, Ep 9.
Why so many words about Rhaenys' rights to the Throne? She wasn't even the last competitor against Viserys, her son Laenor was. It was a discussion between males.
I think it's very easy to tell if someone is good or bad at a language you don't know. Even without subtitles you could easily tell from Aegon's face that he's floundering with his words.
I don't think the battle made sense. Not against Vhagar definately. Melys is much faster and Rhaenys is supposed to be "experienced". Why didn't she went higher and attack from above? She could have easily taken out Aemond and Vhagar both. The worst part is that it makes sense in the book because it's 2 against 1. They changed it and made it dumber. And I get that they did it for the drama but at least don't call Rhaenys an experienced rider. Just cut out this stupid line and it's fine. But she's cool so she has to be "experienced"
