Wildfires in the US state of California are spreading at an incredible speed. The fires have already reached residential buildings and forced hundreds of people to evacuate. Heat and drought are making it difficult for firefighters to fight the blaze. Los Angeles, the largest city in the state, is surrounded by three wildfires, which have been nicknamed the Airport Fire, the Bridge Fire and the Line Fire. These fires have already destroyed about 60,000 hectares (148,263 acres) of forest, as well as 40 residential buildings, which were located in the mountains. The Governor of California declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and neighboring counties due to wildfires approaching the metropolis. About 18,000 people have been ordered to evacuate from their homes in areas of San Bernardino County. The Bridge Fire, one of three fires burning out of control near the second-largest city in the US, has already destroyed dozens of homes. Almost 20,000 hectares (49,421 acres) of land in the Los Angeles Heights area have been destroyed in just 24 hours.
To the north of the Californian metropolis, residents of the towns of Wrightwood and Mount Baldy have been ordered to evacuate their homes. At least 33 homes and several cottages have been destroyed in the fire, which has also engulfed a ski resort, authorities said. An AFP journalist present in Wrightwood saw the remains of charred buildings and cars. The fire, which has destroyed 1,600 hectares (3,953 acres) in 24 hours, adds to the 20,000 hectares (49,421 acres) previously destroyed.
To the northeast of Los Angeles, another fire, the Line Fire, has devastated 14,000 hectares (34,594 acres). Residents of mountain villages were advised to leave their homes, and several roads were closed.
