A Stowaway Huntsman from Australia rehouse and care
We was contacted by Brittannia Leatherbarrows of Bournmouth to help out with a Stowaway spider they had found in a packing crate , they caught it unharmed and we went and collected it , and what a lovely spider it is too possibly the Giant Huntsman of Australia , identifieing these can be awkward as there are so many very similar but fingers crossed !

Not surprised one of these guys stowed away. This type is everywhere here in Australia and while indeed crazy fast, rest assured they are non aggressive and while venomous, are no threat to humans, with bites being rare and only causing some discomfort. Scary part is, they will sometimes run straight at you as a form of escape because they think you are a tree. Good times!

Huntsmans obviously see themselves as spider ambassadors. They will learn not to fear us if we climb them and show them we mean no harm, better that than the broom or bowl. 😄

Nice surprise addition! She’s very active. I wonder how big she’ll get. The huntsmen seem to move so much differently than tarantulas. Be careful of any stowaways from banana crates haha

Nice, that's an Isopedella species. Possibly Isopedella victorialis. Edit: if it's from South Australia, then Isopedella cerussata may be more likely. Has basically the same body pattern, but a slightly different geographical distribution.

The exact spider that stopped me from being afraid of spiders in Ireland. I was terrified until I went to Australia and saw a huge Huntsman beside the light switch. When I went back to Ireland all spiders were tiny compared to that and can't kill me so I stopped being afraid. Having said that I don't know if anyone else has had any crazy big house spiders running around like mad things looking for mates, spiders are usually predictable but during August they're nuts, they freaked me out a bit because two ran onto me and my bed.
@glamdolly30
@glamdolly30 2 года назад
Last week here in the UK a huge house spider ran across my double bed towards me, out of nowhere at 4am (I'm a chronic insomniac). After that, I'm amazed I ever slept again! As a chronic arachnophobe, I keep a pint glass by the bed for just such an eventuality, so was able to quickly catch him and throw him out the front door. My God he was big and fast - terrifying! I guess this is the time of year spiders are looking to find cosy indoor locations to set up home for Winter. I'm just glad, like you, that we don't have Huntsmen as a native breed. They may be harmless, but they are HUGE and for my money way more frightening than the smaller but deadly funnel web. I once visited friends in Australia, and they had Huntsmen living all over their house, but said didn't mind as they kept the insect population down!

I thought I overcame my fear of spiders when I became a mom until a wolf spider charged me early in the morning when I was out on my porch having a cigarette. It ran up on my slipper I jumped back lost my balance tripped over a chair and fell off of my porch breaking my foot. Since then my fear became so much worse. If I saw this spider I'd have another stroke and drop dead.

Yes had a house spider get into my bed, felt it run across my arm. Found it the next day in the kitchen and safely put it out in the garden in a warm spot. Found some others and all have been safely relocated. Also have false widows, they live on the window frames and my car wing mirror, don’t mind them at all and also many different types of orb building spiders all over the garden and window frames.

We ended up with a huntsman here in Dunedin New Zealand. We didn't realise what it was at the time and called my daughter out to see it. She wanted to keep it but I didn't like that idea as she was 3 and most likely would of let it out of the enclosure. I didn't like the idea of such a big spider in the house lol. Anyway after that story the one we found would of been far to big for this enclosure. It was massive, about the size of a dinner plate. The one you have here is so tiny. I can see you making bigger enclosures as she gets older. Huntsman's are fascinating spiders. I'm terrified of arachnids but curious as well. As long as I don't have to touch them I will sit there for hours observing them and their behavior. I'm glad you have the chance to care for her.

Hi Dave! I’m an aspiring aussie entomologist currently still doing my courses at university. I instantly recognise this girl as an *’Isopedella cerussata”* commonly known as the *’Southern Grey Huntsman’* as I have kept them before and are extremely common around my area. although, there are still numerous similar looking species in the Isopedella genus so I would recommend looking into it anyway just to be sure! As a note though, this species do grow insanely large. Not much research has been done on them so I can’t give you an exact size, but I once saw one climbing on the roof of a club I was at that was probably the size of my face, so be sure to have resources available for that! As far as behaviour goes, they are insanely passive, even for huntsman. They are not prone to jumping but are very fast and very good at finding nooks to hide in (as all huntsman are). As far as care, they are a semi arid species that tend to live in gum tree forests. So keeping the enclosure somewhat damp, but not humid would be ideal. Good luck with her!

Shout out to those lovely people who asked for your help, and gave her the best possible life as a VIP resident of Dave's Beastie Room. She landed on all 8 feet there! (By the way - do you know for sure it's a She???) Any chance you might be able to breed her in future? Btw I couldn't work out what happened at the end of the video with camera lady - did she get a text message? Great job Dave, looking forward to seeing your new resident thriving and growing. When I was in Australia, I was told that although they aren't venomous, Huntsmen do kill humans. They do it by sneaking into people's cars and hiding behind the sun visor, then when the driver's on the freeway doing 70mph and pulls down the visor for shade, the massive Hunstman drops on them and they have a fatal car crash! No idea if that's true or can even be proved, as the 8 legged culprit has likely fled the scene of the crash by the time investigators arrive! 🤣🤣🤣🕷🕸🕷🕸🕷🕸🤣🤣🤣

So, I can confirm you're right about them wanting to get in. Personally, I like them in coz they do hunt the roaches. Mind you, my wife keeps a very clean home and yet we do get the odd roach and spider. My dad use just pick them up by his hand just like you almost did and take them outside. I am not that game... I hunt them into a container and take them out. The bark is a winner, they really do love that... they are the same colouring. Youre not acting like a fool infront of the camera and your just genuin7e and i really apreciate that about you ,theres so many content creators within the snake/spider/lizard hobby that i cannot stand for example chandlers wildlife ,dont get me wrong i do follow him but him spazzin out every single second..

Thanx from Oz man. One less Huntsman to put outside with a glass and piece of card. I rescue everything and spiders are well represented. 👍

What a pretty Spider. Beautiful Patterns and Stripes and It wears even a Mask. It's far from Home but luckily has made it into Your caring Hands. A great Thank You to Whoever had the Heart to not just squish It and even gave to You. I hope It'll be fine and well. 🤞

Wow - Great video - as always…. But things must be different in the Old Dart - if you were in Australia and posted a video about a spider that came in a package from the UK , or anywhere - the Quarantine service SWAT team would be knocking down your front door within the hour!!! They are a bit precious down-under!

Love these spiders. I used to find them in the corner of my ceilings all the time. Right above my bed was their favorite.

I'm in Florida and when I was little they were ALWAYS on the ceiling above my grandparents bed! After the sun went down there would be a few every night. They were the huge ones.. And now I don't see any ever... All the cool wildlife had died off out dwindled in numbers to the point of them never being seen in nature. Very sad.

First time my mother saw a huntsman,when we moved to Australia,it was almost the size of normal food plate and super fast,she almost had a heart attack,now we don't mind them ,they are good protectors of the veggie patch🤣

It looks a lot like my Isopedella victorialis, same colour and markings. If so they're very common here in Melbourne.

Giant Huntsman, Wood Huntsman, Hide in Your House Huntsman. I mostly get the latter, it can be pretty cool once you know where they are. When they make themselves known, it can be an undie changing moment, exciting really, make you feel alive. Here comes Summer Aussie's.

I had one of these living on my car for about 6 months until I moved it on! She used to live in the creases of the bodywork and every so often when I'd slow down enough I'd see her running along the windscreen haha. Sometimes I'd go to my car and find her just hanging out on the window. No idea why she never left to find a better place to live but eventually I had to move her on as I'd get worried she'd make her way inside the car and give me a fright while driving on the motorway or something! I used to fear them but I've come to really appreciate them ☺️

Dave, I subscribed just because you saved one our Aussie mates, these blokes come into my house downunder pretty often and scare the wife a little. I just pop them outside again if she spots one.

I have such arachnophobia however she is absolutely lovely! And I'm quite happy that she gets to live in a comfy enclosure instead of someone killing her onsite. Can't wait for updates.

I live in Queensland and we get them in the house, they can give you a bit of a fright when you look up and see a big one above you.They don't stay long because there’s nothing to eat so they disappear again.

Apparently the Japanese have a fondness for their own native huntsman spiders like us Aussies do. They affectionately refer to them as "Sergeant Huntsman" since he or she will come into your house and hunt all the roaches before moving on. :)
