A Strange But Useful Tool For Microscopy

Pipettes are an essential tool for microscopy. Usually a glass slide, a coverslip and a pipette are needed even for the most basic microscopic observations. The pipette I'm going to show you is combining (frankensteining) all three pieces of glass together into one contraption. This pipette might look funny but can be quite useful for all sorts of experiments and long term observations.

When I was student I had a summer job with a waterworks where one of the duties was monitoring the algae in open reservoirs. I had the pleasure of using a microscope to identify the various microbiota and I had a key that showed at what density the various organisms would start to affect the flavour and bouquet of the water. The problem with the old slide and coverslip is that it would squash the bigger organisms like volvox. The frankenpipette would allow these to be seen in all their glory, and since it is has a known volume, you could estimate the density of the species easily.

Well this is cool. Thanks for showing how you clean it, that was my first thought.

An odd tool indeed but seems useful.

What if you were to make one with the tubes rotated 90 degrees? Then they would be more out of the way during viewing and might even fit into a sample vessel.
