Tom, you should have a 1 day seminar for folks. From what you do to research to actually digging a site. I certainly would come and pay to learn.

Very proud that my mother's grandfather was a Union soldier, out of Missouri. He survived, and immigrated to California. I have a picture of he and his wife, as a very elderly couple.

My Father's side my great-grandfather was a confederate soldier who survived. My mother's side great-grandfather was a Union soldier. I'm pretty sure he was captured but survived the war. My great-grandfather on my father's side also on four slaves. One of his slaves lived to be 109 years old. We did research on our family history. I guess when his slaves we're told they were free, they did not want to leave. Also on my great-grandfather's deathbed family and his slaves all stood around his bed. From what we researched he treated them more like family than property. for somebody to live to be a hundred and nine they must have been treated well. Thank God.

All of us who metal detect and bottle dig were drooling at those spurs man It's a dream to find a pair like that in a pit. Lots of beer bottles but still a rich pit. Kudos on an awesome dig!

I'm fascinated by the Gen. Sully expidedition in the 1860s in ND. The battle by Killdeer, the travel through the badlands into Montana. I always wonder if their camp sites along their travels still have artifacts. There are pictures and general locations of sites where some may be located exactly. It's really cool to see you dig up old military stuff from that era. Great video!

Tom... Harkens me back to the day's of bottle digging (1960's) an old dump in Seattle daring back to its closure in the 1920's. Many a wagon load were taken, cleaned and sold, making us kids then, $20-$25. per dozen to the antique dealers! Dig~on!☺️👍🐿
@willong1000
@willong1000 3 месяца назад
Which dump? I dug a bit in the one under the (then) uncompleted overpasses and ramps near the north end of the Arboretum. There was another located, IIRC, between the Rainier Brewery and where the Kingdome was to be built. I intended to dig there after learning of the plans to build the stadium, but got too involved in helping my folks make a go of a small business in Port Angeles. I think I made one walk through that area after the preparatory demolitions had begun, early 1970s, but never got back to try any digging.

This is the first pit I have seen you in that you were not scooping bucket loads of detritus out of your way. Guess that shows the difference between civilian and military. Not sure if military had less waste due to their lifestyle of being on the move or less need for disposable glass items. Beer and medicine not withstanding. It is really cool to learn about history watching you literally digging up the past and hear the excitement when you find a piece for the first time. Much better than a dry textbook, stuck in a seat listening to an even drier professor. Thanks, Tom, for taking us along!

I understand in early times beer was provided for soldiers where a safe supply of potable water was not available . Likely distilled liquor would have been available for purchase but more expensive , relative to soldiers' pay . The beer may have been rationed at no charge , but limited number per day .

It's great that this has been found and video documented. Otherwise it would still be in the ground. The most important thing to me is the people that were there and what they were doing, rather than the artifacts they left behind. I just wonder what inferences we could make from the detritus cast aside by the trowel. It would take significantly more resources to analyze, but we'll never know what information is lost. Maybe in the end, it's enough to know that soldiers were there for a while.
@franceshurt3517
@franceshurt3517 3 месяца назад
Hi Tom, either these soldiers were very happy or very angry or more than likely very sleepy all with nice shiny boots, although depending on how many soldiers there were and how long they camped there its not so many beer bottles really, I know a man who would have drank more than that in a single week, cheers!!!

Being the troops stationed there were most likely cavalry, they probably used shoe polish on the horse tack as well as their boots. Busy work for the troopers if they weren’t involved with fort upkeep and construction. And obviously like all soldiers through time, enjoyed their beer lol.

Soldiers liked their beer? I think the name of the pub just outside of the gates of Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, that we walked to almost every evening, was The Congress. That was over over 60 years ago. Why did they like their beer? They were bored to freaking death.
